danm that’s a bit like saying 2023 wasn’t too bad if you ignore how awful pretty much all of July was though. The awful parts of 2012 were really awful and it’s hard to ignore them.

For me, 2012 is a strong contender for the worst summer of the 21st century (at least here). 2007 was was similar with an awful June & July, but I rate August 2007 higher than August 2012.

Summer8906 Summer 2024 was definitely a pretty decent summer in the south. For me it was probably the most unsettled summer I can remember. It wasn’t terrible like 2007, 2012, 2020 statistically it was pretty much bang average. June was rather dull however. July 2024 was the driest here for six years but it was still very showery. August 2024 in western Scotland was among the wettest on record. August 2024 followed a very similar pattern to 2009 I think. Summer 2024 to me was probably on par with the likes of 2015/2016. Those three summers here were generally very unsettled but did end up very average here and did have brief spells of good weather. One thing that was notable about summer 2024 here was the total lack of heat. It was the first summer I have had on record that hasn’t exceed 24.C. Every other summer has since even the poorer ones.

cheese summer 2023 wasn’t actually too bad a summer at least for here. People forget just how good that June was. June 2023 here had maxima that was almost 1.C above 2018’s and that was 2.3.C above average. June 2023 also was sunnier. Even July despite being wet wasn’t too bad, it wasn’t cool nor dull it was actually a bit sunnier than average too. August 2023 was quite a bit drier than average but did have a bit less sun and temperatures were still average. I think it was a lot worse further west mind you but certainly for me I’ve seen a lot worse

Harry233 I think if the bad weather in July and the good weather in June were swapped around, it wouldn’t have seemed half as awful - but getting the worst weather at the height of summer is a real kick in the proverbial. The good weather in June felt like a distant memory by the third week of July.

July was very dull in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It was less dull for most of Scotland (relative to average).

A good way to describe the differences between summers 2023 and 2024, is that 2023 was more exciting, but 2024 a lot more pleasant, just quite boring. Why I rate 2023 a little higher than 2024 though not by much. 2 very different summers but both adding up to be quite average overall from my pov here.

Sure, but Summer is 3 months, not one. You're right, the June of 2012 was so diabolical, as was early July, that it relegates that Summer to one of the worst in living memory. However if we're doing a balanced assessment of the entire Summer it's only fair to point out that the end of July, August (and the first half of September) was a lot, lot better.

cheese that is very true. July was definitely the worst month out that summer.

cheese this is what I was saying a couple of months ago summer 2023 was no summer 2007 because it had a lot of hot weather just at the wrong times let’s say for example we swap July and June round and august and September round you have about a month of hot weather from around the 10th July to the 10th August I bet if this happened summer 2023 would be called a classic.
