Semerwater seen from the opposite side of Wensleydale
From here you can see the lake is in an unusual location in what is probably a depression sculpted by ice.
The notched lip of the outflow could well be moraine-like material banked up from ice flowing in the main valley.
So the lake is a very 'temporary' feature in geological time scales.
