I've definitely experienced stronger gusty winds that Storm Ciara (not quite living up to the infamous 'red warning' of Feb 2014 - more of a direct westerly that drove in off the Irish Sea like a runaway train)...but the squall line made it interesting for a few minutes.  May just scrape a few falling wintry showers in the next few days but doubt any settling snow will materialise in daytime temps of 5-7c.

Gale force winds and more heavy rain is forecast and soldiers move in to help evacuate homes in the Thames Valley, but forget their wellies

Agreed - Storm Ciara was/is nothing too unusual for this part of the world, just a fairly typical winter storm and the squall line wasn't as bad as some I've experienced.

What is unusual about Ciara is the widespread effects - it isn't every day you see gale force winds across almost all of the UK.

Same for me. Even in the 2007 storm I only remember 55 knot gusts reported.

    EK17 having another go now...

1350 METAR on January 18th 2007 reported 65 knot gusts - memorable as it took the felt off my shed roof and some on my street lost a couple of roof tiles.

Looks like EK17 has given up with MAN and is off to his alternate.

  3. To say definitively that there is nothing (an atheist stance) makes no sense, we cannot feel or know 'nothing', 'nothing' reveals nothing to us.

We may not be able to feel or know 'nothing' but it exists…what can you remember from before you were born?

  4. Hence why TAFS are such a poor tool. Failing to illustrate the real potential of the system.

TAFs can be useful if you live close enough to a TAF airport - they are valid for 5 miles around the airport.

They're not intended to 'illustrate the real potential of a system', rather to give pilots some weather input to plan their flights.

  5. That would be brilliant. I think 'apps' are the way forward for a lot businesses. I'm seriously considering getting an iPad, I've been in the Apple Store everyday since its launch but just bring myself to spend that amount of money. Just wondering if you think its worth the price.

For me, it is worth the price; I really like the iPad. TBH I mainly use it for casual browsing and email and it's just more convenient than getting the laptop out. The screen is gorgeous, and multitouch comes into its own with a big screen; browsing especially benefits. The device isn't perfect though; it's a little heavy to hold for any length of time, and that screen doesn't half attract fingerprints...

  6. I have just bought an iPad; it's a great device and there are a number of weather apps available for it, but they are mostly US-Centric and lack things like UK radar.

I would like to suggest you consider developing a netweather app for the iPad; the the V5 Radar would look great on an iPad screen...
