  1. In England for the first time this year and the weather in the Peak District is pretty uninspiring, showcasing the worst that this country has to offer - grey, drizzly and 6c.
  2. Not even higher slopes... snowline around 600m this morning which is almost as low as you can get around here.
  3. Yep, fresh snow falling down to 1000m over the last three days, giving a return to winter at moderate altitudes. There was (as is normal) nothing more than a few patches when I hiked in the forests up to ~1300m last weekend though, and this is very temporary unless you're at one of the highest resorts.
  4. Fresh falls yesterday mean that the snowline looks to be around 1400m, but today has sleet falling right now at 450m (!) with quite a dump expected at higher altitudes.
  5. The snow has stopped falling, but it had given a good temporary covering down to 1000m or so, and will have greatly supplemented the snowback at higher altitude. Spring is very much back with sunny and warm temperatures on the horizon for the rest of March.
  6. Yep, March is definitely making sure that February's mild - if not warm - weather won't put an early end to the season, at least in the north western alps. An unexpected and rare fall of snow all the way down at 450m right now and even modest altitudes should see an improvement in the conditions.
  7. Quite a lot of rain since my last post but it's been very mild at times. Snowline down to around 2000m but anything below that has been stripped bare by the wind and rain.
  8. Trees covered with snow down to 600-700m in Haute Savoie, lowest so far this winter.
  9. Lots of heavy rain tonight, and a single clap of thunder. Very welcome, not least because cycling home earlier this evening was extremely uncomfortable in the muggy conditions, despite a cooler max of 'only' 23c - in previous summers that temperature would have been fairly impressive!
  10. Glasgow Bishopton above freezing (a balmy 0.2c) for the first time since Tuesday as of 10:00, and the city is getting back to some functionality. Trains and rural areas will no doubt take a lot longer!
  11. For statistical purposes, the 1st runs from 9am today until 9am tomorrow right?
  12. Very difficult to estimate, but I'd say around 20-25cm of snow on the northern edge of Glasgow. Almost a direct hit from the heaviest falls! No doubt the Campsies will have even more.
  13. Sleet showers on and off today in Glasgow but the snowline was down to around 250m on the Kilpatrick hills when darkness fell.
  14. Quite heavy snow here. We on the north side of Glasgow largely missed the bigger falls that fell to the south earlier this week, and also had quite a bit of sleet and rain where others had snow, so this is probably the heaviest of the winter so far.
  15. It was odd leaving home at 6 this morning, cycling in a strangely warm December wind with no need for gloves and then coming home to an icy wind, drenched in sleety rain. This week has been too busy so I had no idea there was something wintry on the horizon until just now.
  16. Probably a little more wintry here towards the edge of Glasgow than in the centre. But mostly wet snow and sleet without ever settling. I didn't manage a peek of the Campsie of Kilpatrick hills - these only reach 400-500m but I'd imagine they'd be quite white.
  17. ^ I can't seem to get rid of a very old quote box above. Finally we've reached some more seasonal temperatures. Although today wasn't a good day to forget to bring gloves. It made for a very cold cycle back home just now.
  18. 6c last night here, and that's barely outside of Glasgow. Winter is coming.
  19. Left a very soggy trip to Derbyshire this morning fully coated up and arrived back in Glasgow, feeling overdressed in the same gorgeous weather that I left on Friday. Currently 9c there and 17c here. Bearing in mind that I've missed a few summers, the last six weeks might just be the most enjoyable spell of weather since moving here in 2012.
  20. I read the above reports before getting out of bed and I was surprised at how much snow there seemed to be on the ground compared to EK/Glasgow. Alas it's raining fairly steadily so soon enough it will be gone anyway.
  21. No-one's going to make a big deal out of a single month's temperature over an area covering a tiny part of the world being unremarkably average, surely? Censoring ice extent or global average temperatures... well, it's not feasible but I can see the motivation to do so.
  22. Still 12c at midnight. After quite a chilly November it feels really odd. I know last December got even milder than this but it was also preceded by months of mild and wet weather.
  23. Despite anticipating warmer temperatures it's still -3c at Glasgow Airport, which for the last week seems to be the norm whenever it's dark (which it sadly is most of the time!). The city's been looking very wintry with a large build-up of frost, even close to the centre. Gorgeous week. I've realised over the course of this week/month/Autumn just how much I prefer this continental-style climate that the West of Scotland has temporarily adopted, and having more than 7 hours of daylight would be the icing on the cake. I'm not sure if the climate is a good enough excuse to move again, but I should make my mind up soon before Brexit makes employment options abroad a lot more tricky...
