  1. I have been trying to get a simpler understanding of the Maarsy echoes Here goes; The Maarsy echoes detect 2 of the 3 ingredients needed to produce NLC`s. These are water molecules and dust particles. The 3rd are cold enough temperatures for these particles to freeze together to form the ice clouds The readings from Maarsy are taken from directly above the station which is situated on the Norwegian island of Andøya 69° N So the current temperatures in the mesosphere would be needed to assess the ability of the dust/ water molecules to freeze On a more pleasing note Images are beginning to turn up so we can safely say the season has begun Yesterdays Aim
  2. Tut... me and my burgeoning dementia I`m looking forward to the next Aim to see how the clouds have developed ( will be interesting to see because the Sun is raging atm)
  3. Not really...we`ll be clouded out But I can confirm your calculations are spot on...... the orbit strips have been released earlier this season, and they seem to show that the images were taken, for the UK orbit, around midday Timings are UTC Let the frustrations begin Edit; NASA's AIM Satellite Mission | AIM Project Science AIM.HAMPTONU.EDU The Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) NASA satellite mission is exploring PMCs/NLCs.

  7. I'm in the same yearly boat of understanding, concerning the interpretation of the Maarsy echoes The list for NLC webcams which has been updated and checked from last season has been realised by the AKM website Handy because they show the Latitude of the camera Webcams (aktualisiert 19.05.2022) - AKM e.V. Forum FORUM.METEOROS.DE Edit; On the subject of the Maarsy this has appeared on their website Start - Leibniz-Institut für Atmosphärenphysik, Kühlungsborn WWW.IAP-KBORN.DE "These results are only informal. Before any other use, their validity must be confirmed by the publisher!" So careful what you post....ie post the link rather than an individual images ( from experience they can get a bit Aarsy over this subject.)
