  1. Ibulieve that March will continue dry until mid-month with increasing amounts of sunshine, and mild. Then we'll get the odd northerly outbreak from time to time, but from the NW, with showers and sunshine, so still qutie bright, and a very average CET (around 7.0C) I beleive.

April, an unsettled and thundery month, and mild at times, cold at others, maybe some snow in upland England at times. Average overall (9.0C CET). Rainfall prolly average. A month of much hail.

Ibulieve that May will probably see some alternating warm, then cooler periods, with showers or general rain at times, with the odd rumble of thunder in the midlands and of course Manchester. Highs reaching 30 degrees in Manchester in the final week, and 25-28 degrees in other places.

Ibulieve that June could be quite poor after a decent May, with a lot of rain and especially thunderstorms, and quite cool, with average highs over the midlands of only 18-19C, a CET of only 14C or so, so cold. Could be sunny at times with cold nights, most rain being convective and showery in nature. So, a northerly sunshine and showers regime. Average sunshine. Rain 120-130% of average.

Ibulieve that July should be a decent month. Reaching 31 degrees, here in Manchester, and 33 in the SE in one or two places. Avg highs of 24 degrees in the midlands, 26 in the south, 24 in Manchester, with 250 hours sunshine. Anticyclonic conditions positioned to draw warm air from the central european continent and even the mediterranean.

Ibulieve that August will finally be the summer month it has not been for the last seven years. Very sunny with a mean temp of 15-16C or so, with high daytime temps but rather cool nights at times. Manchester reaches 29C. Apart from the thundery June it will unfortunately be a rather calm unthundery summer, with no storms in July and August. That's all, folks!

  2. April 2008 was about 0.5°C where I was. Also June 2008 was the same below average too where I was. I don't want a repeat of a June that cool unless there are plenty of storms unlike 2008 when the entire country had none whatsoever. The other thing is that there's no such thing as being "overdue" a warm or cold this or that. Weather has no memory. Sure we have "climate" expectations to go by, but when all things considered climate does change, and there's no point using the same old reference figures year upon year, I mean some people are still using the 61-90 figures, we should be using the 1981-2010 figures now. Why not use the 1921-1950 figures? I mean where do we draw the line. If we continue to use the 1961-1990 figures then the chance of getting a below average April is very low, because that average is no longer representitive of modern weather, for better or for worse and for whatever reason, the weather is getting warmer.

  3. I would imagine that 2008 would be regarded by many on here as the perfect Spring. Alternating warm and cool spells during March and April with some snow. Then a wonderfully warm and sunny May.

Apart from the early May, that spring was pretty awful - it was an extension of winter, March was actually colder than January that year, and had the white easter. April was very cold until the final weekend, when it was mild. If not for that mild spell, it too would have been barely warmer than January.

A good spring would mean having months like April 2007 followed by May 1992.

  4. I've never liked those "if you like/don't like X something's wrong with you" inferences. There are a minority of people who suffer from "reverse SAD", Laserguy for example, and the condition is known to be more common in countries which traditionally see a lot of hot sunshine.

I enjoy hot sunny weather but I also like variety, and a prolonged dry sunny spell often has me scanning the charts for the possibility of convective events somewhere down the line. This is why I rated July 2006 over August 1995- the hot sunshine was interspersed with thundery outbreaks, whereas in August 1995 it was almost wall to wall dry sunny weather until the 23rd. However, it's not really the August 1995 type settled weather that I tend to find tedious after a while- more the mundane stuff we get in the westerly flow on the northern flank of an Azores ridge with sunshine not significantly exceeding the average and the odd bit of drizzle.

Laserguy has reverse SAD???? For hell's sake man, he's in the right country all ready!!!

Even if the midlands/south gets a heatwave he could go to NW Scotland and be right in his element!!

  5. Of course it's not too early to be talking about summer, what clown came up with that idea?

Anyway, I'm sure anyone with half a brain cell can admit that it's due time we had another hot blast of the longevity and nature of 1976. Many consecutive days of 30°C even here in Manchester, how wonderful it was!!!! Everybody enjoyed it. Such sunshine, never too humid, no rain and cloud to spoil the party. Didn't need to jet off abroad to get any sunshine and heat that year! BBQ's out every day for two weeks! I can't think of a single person who really didn't enjoy it.

People who have a problem with hot sunny weather have a problem with their brain, or lack thereof! Nature is intrinsically designed to be attracted to sunshine and warmth unless you're a polar bear

Let's hope that high pressure blocking finds its way to the south east of the UK this time round
