Saw on the news this evening a report mentioning I think 18 avalanches over this weekend. That must be some kind of record?
I was on the Buachaille in Feb 95 when a huge avalanche caught 3 climbers. The Glencoe team were nearly caught in an another huge avalanche trying to locate them that evening. We heard that there had been 10 or 11 observed avalanches that day, in Glencoe alone. Tons of wet snow had been falling for days, rain and wind at sea level just like just now. I hope anyone venturing into the hills over the next few weeks (months?) is very careful.

This is my first post, so be gentle :-)
I've been lurking for a while, trying to get my head round the processes that have conspired to affect our weather so dramatically this winter. I must admit I've found the Models forum very...er...challenging, seems to have been a lot of "wishcasting" as well as a fair amount of trolling, but some of the posts are absolutely fantastic for someone like me trying to understand the atmosphere - Gibby and Tamara in particular.
I used to do a lot of winter mountaineering and would always watch the 850 temps to see where the freezing level (and thus snow) might be. I also learned a little about heights, in particular that 528 /510 DM heights would be *likely* to produce snow down towards sea level - don't know if that was right? If it is, looking at GFS into next weekend, it looks like we will be under 510 or even 492 DM air - like the current GFS run out to 144 hours. Does that not mean snow?

I've just seen two flashes over Glasgow!!!
Agreed, two flashes apparent, looking south from Rannoch Drive area of Bearsden. Out for a wee drive in the snow

Sorry for being pessimistic but I really can't see any excitement with April showers and wet ground.
That is the high school getting in touch with parents. All pupils who travel via bus/taxi to and from Crieff High school have been sent home due to the deterioration in the weather.
My wife has rang from work to say that patient travelling from Stirling has cancelled her appointment when on route to say that the weather is far to bad for her to continue her journey.
At the moment I am looking at a blue sky and light winds !!
Brief wintry flurry in Hamilton, blue skies otherwise.
Interestingly, no - one in my work seems to have any faith in the Met Office warnings any more.
Also possibly of note - neither does my employer, who ordinarily in these circumstances would email everyone with some reminders about bad weather poilicies etc.

Next Weds FAX looks interesting as well
Need an expert - does that cold occlusion lying across the central belt mean loads of ppn (most likely snow)?

Actually quite relieved that we aren't getting a pasting, as I was looking forward to my first dive of the year tomorrow evening. At least (I think, though not at all knowledgeable!) this downgrade reduces the risk of the Atlantic coming back, and keeps us colder, dryer and less windy than it was in December, which all in all makes for a slightly easier life! TOORP? Ha!

*whispers* it;s ok, oneman - there are a few of us here who weren't born in Scotland of Scottish parents! So far as I can see, nobody gives a toss so long as we chose to move here/ stay here, and are happy to be in Scotland! So you're not alone, old chap, what what!*
Quite right! Speaking as a native, if yer daft enough to want to live here, then you are a Scot!
PS keeping this weather elated, I don't trust any of the models with regard to this weekend...

what do we reckon, maybe 1% chance of this chart coming off
Nice bit of eyecandy though, first particulary cold chart I have seen on the GFS so far, albeit +360 LOL

Is this the first showing of the 528 thickness over the UK too....?
Dave
Ooops that went well! Meant to show the 500-1000 height chart in the 2nd pain..
Try again...

Yes, looking at BBC / Met Office forecasts (as opposed to warnings) I can't see anything other than standard February fare. Snow, maybe, sleet, probably, maybe rain, not savagely cold, maybe frosty at night.
