  1. BuriedUnderSnow, I feared you'd say that.

Now, you obviously know your weather, and I'm a weather numpty : Would I be right in thinking that we've been getting these non-stop lows for weeks on end because they're not blowing away east over Norway, but instead seem to be stalling over the Faroes for some reason then circling around each other in the north Atlantic drawing in yet more lows ? If so, what's causing this. Has something changed or "gone wrong" ?

  2. 18z is indeed horrific. It seems to be becoming slightly more 'U' shaped than 'V' shaped, so I guess that means a belt of stronger winds around the 'nucleus'. Looks like it won't clear Shetland until Thursday. Then the next system moves in on Friday....

Please, does anyone know or want to hazard a guess when we're going to get some settled weather ?

  3. Milkmaid, it's always best to be prepared. And I certainly wouldn't like to be in Donegal on Tuesday morning. But I'm in the 'not that bad' camp at the moment, looking at Meteociel's 06Z GFS Europe run. Last wednesday/thurdays blast worried me more, and unless those isobars tighten up on the charts before tuesday, I'm already more concerned about the possibility of next Friday/Saturday being nasty.

  4. ..... I just wish it would stop being so violently windy. It feels like it gusts to 40-50mph two to three days a week and feels like it has done forever...

Yes. It's utterly wretched. Mind you I'd settle for the 40-50mph gusts just 2 or 3 days a week - here we've got them every sodden day!.....

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/he/stornoway_forecast_weather.html

I have less than zero faith in anyones ability to forecast the weather with any semblance of accuracy more than one week ahead - they may as well dangle a string of bladderwrack out their attic window and gaze in a crystal ball, for all the good it will do. So I'm not going to fret over any predictions of whether or not this jetstream-driven nightmare will ever end. Oh no.

Instead I'm going to sacrifice my mother-in-law in a wicker frame whilst invoking the mighty Jupiter and Saturn to send me a blocking high.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a large wicker frame to attend to.

  5. Just had our strongest gust 64.8mph although the one I just heard sounds way worse. Pretty sure my windows are going to come in!!

iam going to collapse with fear iam shacking so much dammit i hate the wind

Just heard the noise of a handful of distant bins blowing over. I hope that gust isn't heading for me! Also, looking out onto the street I can see and hear all the wine bottles rolling down the street.

Just 3 of those great live quotes from this storm, bringing this ferocious weather to life for the rest of us.

Is this storm going to be named as 'bawbag' was?

May I suggest 'bawbuster', or does it merit something beginning with a 'c' ? :whistling:

  6. Barely a breath of wind at the mo on Isle of Lewis, although it was a bit breezy earlier. Snow all gone at lower levels, but feeling damp and a cool 3 degrees c. The hills still have a nice coat of the white stuff.

My heart goes out to you folks on the mainland..... we know that sinking feeling of seeing bits of roof airborne only too well. Maybe the jetstream is slowly drifting south. With luck it will give our friends south of the border some of that "interesting" weather they've either been missing or praying for.

  7. Happy New Year.

Am still lying in bed typing this on the laptop. Can hear a gentle breeze outside with maybe 30mph gusts, and a rare ray of sunshine has made it through a crack in the curtain. So far so good.

See on metoffice that tuesdays 'blow' has been downgraded for here to 45mph gusts - YAY !!!! - *punches hand in air* - looks like the Isle of Lewis will be at the eye of the storm yet again. Not so good tho for the folks in ayrshire and argyll. You have my sympathy.

Perhaps those south of Hadrians Wall who use the word "interesting" to describe life-threatening and ultra-crappy weather might feel a bit of a breeze too - hopefully it will bring an end to comments along the lines of "I don't think this winter has been windier than last years"....

  8. Another grey overcast one today. Looking milder as the day goes on.. good to see we have some early first footers from the other regions.

The first storm of the New Year is continuing to catch the eye, some subtle changes in between runs - whether the LP tracks North of the UK is still difficult to guess. Also looking at where the storm will deepen the furthest, a couple of speedier storm tracks have this low deepening in the North Sea.

From the GEFS Ensembles I have picked out around 6 charts which highlight the more severe options available on this system. ( There are others which are less dramatic..)

p2 - sees central pressure 930mb, North West in the tight Isobars

    post-7292-0-50112900-1325247291_thumb.pn

p7 - LP more tilted on approach pushing winds further south

    post-7292-0-70564300-1325247302_thumb.pn

p12 - similar to the first this time deepens to 935mb

    post-7292-0-02717800-1325247319_thumb.pn

p15 - this is where previous systems have slowed and deepened

    post-7292-0-60210300-1325247325_thumb.pn

p18 - a quicker route across the north - anyone see the Northern Isles under there?

    post-7292-0-26622000-1325247333_thumb.pn

p20 - again quicker and at this timeframe rattling Norway

One to blow those New Year cobwebs away !

Oh Gawd..... here we go again :help:

Met office forecasting 81mph gusts for Stornoway on tuesday. When will this misery end... :cray:

  9. Thanks for the welcoming responses folks !

Outer Hebrides have been in an odd spot this year, was up visiting family during the "bawbag" and it seemed much calmer than what was going on in the central belt. Even the following gales that week seemed to hit the mainland more than usual, i dont know if it is the case but it seems that the centre of these depressions has been close to or even over Lewis on one or two occassions leading to the benign conditions certainly when i was there. Must admit, i dont begrudge you the wind at all.... the old isobars always look tight at this time of year up there :smilz38:

Yes Craig you are right. We have been at the eye of the storm on a few occasions so then the worst of the weather has been further south.... like today. But still gusting to 70mph here.

  10. Totally sick and fed up of all the wind this winter. Fed-up oh yes, oh so fed-up of it.... totally and completely.....

Never known anything like this before. The frequency of deep lows sweeping by is incredible. It feels like every 3rd or 4th day for the past umpteen weeks we've had gales gusting over 70mph here on Isle of Lewis.

I say again.... I am FED UP of it !!!!!!

Just wish the jetstream would s*d off somewhere else.. Gimme a nice blocking high right NOW !!!!!!
