  1. I’m near the Somerset Levels and after fine powdery snow all day I also now have the ice crystals, and things generally seem a bit melty and drippy outside.

The weirdest thing is though that since it’s changed to this I’m getting black bits falling too, so my white snow is heavily speckled. I’ve had a look and it seems like little seeds or seed cases. Anyone else getting this? It’s out the front and back of my house.

  2. For parts of the SW this was a non-event. My weather station recorded a max gust of 36.9mph overnight. I double checked that with an online station in Taunton that recorded a max gust of 40.1mph. So really nothing whatsoever of interest. We were clearly near the eye in some form or other, and fascinatingly my station recorded an average wind speed of 0.3mph from 2200 to midnight last night with the wind direction from the east. This was the period of calm that some in Somerset were posting about. Amazing that the IOW could be receiving a battering when at the same time we were becalmed over here.

So I guess IMBY it was an "interesting" non-event showing that localised effects can vary hugely.

Even closer than the IOW was getting a battering. I live a few miles from Yeovilton which recorded a gust of 77mph and I can confirm the winds were incredibly strong. I've just been outside fixing guttering and air vents that had got blown out, trying to salvage the parts of my gas bbq strewn across the lawn, locating my anemometer that got ripped from the shed roof and failing to find part of the shed roof- who knows where that ended up. The noise from the wind at about 4:30 woke me- it was so loud! But the worst only lasted for maybe 4 or 5 minutes with the very very worst probably less than a minute.

  3. Was crazy here. Never seen anything like it. The weird thing is that the worst of the damage in my garden seems to have been caused by winds blowing from an easterly direction- the heaviest things, like the 87kg bbq (r.i.p), were tossed due west! I also can't get over the big changes in pressure as the strongest winds hit. I was too busy freaking out slightly to look at my barometer for the couple of minutes the winds were their most ridiculous, but straight after the pressure was about 977 and then had risen to 982 within 15 mins or so. If only my anemometer hadn't been blown away I imagine I would have got some amazing gust readings! 2 trees down on my road.

Edit: I think my barometer reads high.

  4. Model estimates from 36-48h ago were more accurate than later estimates -- the low appears to be developing a very dangerous squall line feature now (0600h) west of an Oxford-Bournemouth line and likely to be moving through London and the southeast around 0800h. Winds increase from SW 50 mph to W 70-80 mph as this squall line passes and there could even be stronger gusts to come if this develops thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, SW winds in the Dover marine area of the Channel are currently gusting to 90 mph or more (150 km/hr).

If you're still to the east of the squall line check the radar and get ready -- walking or driving is strongly discouraged as trees and other debris very likely to be flying about. I would expect that winds might continue to gust for 3-4 hours beyond time of passage of this front but the most violent gusts will be close to its passage.

Having had it pass over me I couldn't agree more. It is nothing like the winds that come before or after. Secure everything now, even things you think are too heavy to be moved by the wind. My bbq (r.i.p) weighs 87kg and was picked up and tossed across the garden. The winds were unbelievable, the worst I've ever seen. Quite frightening. I just can't imagine what is going to happen if that continues across the country into rush hour. Be careful people.

  5. Oops! haha Posted Image

Meant the sound of it blowing around/over the roof, It hasn't reached that stage yet and hopefully wont!

haven't heard much unusual for the last 10 mins or so actually, I think the strongest may still be to come looking at what Yeovilton got at 5am.

Yes, if that was the front passing over rather than a localised event then there is likely worse to come for many. We weren't forecast to get that here. It has really died down now. Still windy with gusts but not howling. Pressure up 10mb in an hour.

  6. Maybe it was just the squall that came through? Looking at this: http://www.xcweather.co.ukIf you look at yeovilton now, it's says up to 68mph, and that's around where that rain band is, and I must say, it was very gusty just then!

Thanks for that link, that data is from just after the winds struck, but it says the winds were coming from the west- my bbq (r.i.p) got blown towards the west. Also my barometer's been reading higher than local readings, but at that point read much lower than the link suggests. I can only describe the wind strength here as anemometer destroying so can't compare that. I think that station is about 7 miles from me. What could make its readings so different?

Pressure is still rising- up to 987 by my readings. Up 8 in less than an hour and winds continue to gust but nothing spectacular.

  7. There was a massive pressure change too from 979 just after the crazy winds passed, up to 986 now! All in about 20 mins. (It was/is probably lower than that- my barometer has been reading a bit high)

Just had about 5-10 minutes of very heavy rain wind picked up and there was a massive bang somewhere outside but I couldn't see what it was.

Probably my bbq. Gutted! Brand new and lying in bits.

  8. What the flipping **** is happening?!? Stayed up until a few hours ago and it was gusting nicely- really windy. Just woken now by noise of wind through gap in window that was so loud my cats ran under fled and I nearly jumped from my skin. Suddenly winds got so so so strong that in a few seconds my garden is wrecked! Ok, so I was to young to remember 87 storm, and I didn't live in SW during Burns day storm, but I have never seen anything like it. Shed roof coming off, massive heavy gas bbq lying in bits having been flung accross garden, and my wind anemometer just gone! Dashed out to grab bits of bbq and stop them flying about and I am still shaking. Winds still really blowing but not like they just did for a couple of mins. Wind seems.roughly north now too. Wow.

Was that a surge or something??

  10. Moderate wet snow here but not settling- in fact, it seems to be melting what had settled last night. No laying snow on pavements now, but still some on grass, shed roof etc. Has been snowing constantly since I got up at 7.30.

Incidentally, does 'pitching' mean settling? I haven't heard the term before. Is it a south west term? I've only just moved here. I thought it might be a more meteorological term I didn't know, but my neighbour just used it and he certainly isn't particularly scientifically minded. (He asked me the other day which direction was north. I told him. He then asked me which direction was south).

  11. Anyone noticing if Met Office forecasts are accurate tonight or is it about nowcasting? Also the warning just just misses me.

Not IMBY. I'm supposed to have heavy rain right now, with sleet by midnight- but I've had moderate snow for at least an hour! Yippee!
