I've been chasing around Ross/Hereford and am now not far from Tenbury Wells. There have been a handful of flashes and rumbles but not as much as I had hoped. Most impressive thing was the rain, which was very intense. No visible CG's or IC's, all sheet lightning and not that many of them. Still, it's a successful start to the season for me in the regards that I got under a storm.

not a fan of thunderstorms in my local vicinity (l dislike having to disconnect all my sensitive equipment), but l heard thunder in the distance, according to the lightning app closest strike was 4miles away from Hereford.

Saw some distant flashes at around 2am last night from the storms that broke out between Gloucester and Hereford but other than that a quiet night for me. I managed about 2 hours sleep overall in the car.

Awaiting the mornings model runs but currently my eyes are on Somerset from around midday. I'll be getting a strong tea and a fry up first though :-)

heard a couple of claps of thunder before it died away.. came as close as Rotherwas (maybe a mile or two south east of there by the looks of the strikes scanner). tho there was a stray strike around ledbury which my sister commented on (mainly because it made her jump outta her skin and she had to wake me up to tell me about it).

other than that looked like the rest headed up to Worcester.

  3. surprised there hasnt been any mentions about weather warnings here, looks like the South West and South Wales is in for a bit of a windy spell.

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=warnings&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1457481600&regionName=uk

Widespread gales, and severe gales in more exposed areas, are expected to develop during the early hours of Wednesday bringing gusts of 50-60 mph to some inland areas and gusts to 70 mph to some coastal areas and higher ground. The winds will slowly ease during the afternoon. Combined with heavy rain these high winds are likely to produce some difficult driving conditions. Please be aware of the risk of disruption to transport and possible disruption to power supplies, as well as high waves overtopping some coastal routes.

currently affected areas noted as: Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Plymouth, Somerset, Torbay, Isles of Scilly, Bridgend, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Swansea and Vale of Glamorgan

I was never 'bashing' the metoffice - I was merely commenting on that its a non-event event here. Fair enough they have to be careful and err on the side of caution and I accept that. Not sure that quoting stats as you do backs up your argument though. 8241 for the SW equates to about 0.1of the SW population so not exactly eventful in my eyes but thats just IMHO

be that as it may, compared to the usual daily power cuts there are significantly more today than usual.

The amber warnings should never have included some central southern counties - breezy and thats it. Can tell it's a non event here (southampton) as haven't heard one person in the office talking about it

for a non-event its left over 2379 ppl without power in the west midlands, 8241 in the south west and 3585 according to Western Power distribution.. (granted not all maybe due to the weather, but l expect many of those without power are due to the windy weather.. even if its not been that windy in your area..

after all, land isnt flat and there are many obstacles.. ld believe there are lots of factors that shelter some areas over others (tho thats my personal opinion, tho l dont have any knowledge to base that upon, lm here just because lm interested in knowing the potential of bad weather ahead of time).

  6. sadly l can only see things getting worse... l hate to bring politics into the discussion but with the Tories currently in power l doubt we will see much money for flood defences etc going outside london..

after all not more than a few weeks ago they were warned about issues but ignored them, not to mention the cuts made to schemes to protect ppl against flooding, also l heard a few hours ago that there was another Cobra meeting regarding the catastrophic flooding and the treasury (namely George Osborne) seems to have been blocking access to funding to help those who have been hit it seems, tho it seems they are set to rake in millions from the last storm and this one in VAT from what lve read.

Really 40-50mph wind gusts wouldn't do much harm other than knock a few wheelie bins over and make the sea choppy. Once you get above 55-60mph is when things begin to get a bit more "interesting" 60mph could bring down a few branches and blow a few signs away 70mph brings down trees and can loosen a few house tiles and make the house shake. 80mph is dangerous, this can do some serious damage 90mph can cause devastation in a built up area and places not use to experienceing it. Rember though these are gusts and not sustained winds. For instances a sustained 50mph wind would be a bit dodgy

are you sure? we had a power cut about 5hours ago (not long come back on), there seems to be several trees down in the area according to the local radio station lol..

weird thing is according to the MetO the last 24hr readouts dont show anything over 44mph winds in my vicinity :/

  8. lm curious about the criteria for weather warnings, been looking at the MetO forecast and its predicting winds around 53mph in my area, lm just finding it curious as to why there havent been expanded weather warnings given there have been times where wind warnings were given for that sort of wind speed  speed.

  9. lm thinking there are still issues relating to last nights storm around the area.. went months without any power issues, had two power cuts at the peak of last nights storm, just had another this morning.. my guess is some leftover trees that hung on may have fell. pretty annoying as l was watching something.. (thank god for the UPS).

  10. Where are you?

So the naming of storms should be based on how severe it gets in Upminster, Essex only?

~15,000 properties are out of power across the West Midlands Region tonight, plenty in Wales too. Lots going on with reports of fallen trees. Sounds pretty stormy to me!

Hereford area. lights have flickered a few times since.

  11. lm just curious about tomorrow, estofex has parts of southern/eastern england as well as parts south wales circled with a 15% chance of lightning.

l thought that diminished as the night went on. (not keen on lighting in my local area but do understand the draw of it) when not close to my computer equipment lol.. however looking at the gfs etc lm not sure how estofex works out tomorrows chances.
