So Finally got our power back late last night.. 1st job was to inspect the freezers, throw out all the stuff that handn't survived. Thankfully most stuff was still frozen.
We've been here 10 years and the worst power cut we've had prior to this was 3 or 4 hours. This one was 58hours.
Glad its all over.

The weather station is battery powered, but the display I have is fairly limited (but can run on battery for a few days) so I rely more on the ambient weather dashboard for detailed info, but that requires an internet connection.
I managed got an old mobile wifi-router running and found a laptop with some life in it so I could get the station data back online. So no significant gaps in the data yet. Now it's just a case of which batteries die first!excellent, your data was just getting interesting..

Not got a weather station.. but just getting gusts now enough to make we worried we'll lose trees.. (10s of hard gust where you can see all the trees bending for most of their height). At least we should lose fewer trees than 87, as then they all still had their leaves on.

Quit often the Needles near Freshwater catches the record wind speed when a storm moves through.
not sure it did in 87... it just broke (I think it recorded 106 then some vital part blew away)

what's the relationship between wind speed and damage? is it cubic or something? so 80mph vs. 60mph is a vast difference?
Drag is a square law.. but power to overcome drag (as in horse power to make your car go faster) ends up being cubic (i.e. 100hp =~105mph, 200hp=~140mph, 1000hp~=200mph).. so 80mph is ~ 77% more drag than 60mph

I'm gas too! Will need a match to light it but other than that ...! Just been out and taken the gazebo over the chickens down, tied lids to feed bins, brought our dustbins up to the house. Laid some stuff down. Other bits are loose but as I don't have a shed to put them in they will have to chance it!! Got batteries for battery candles, got a shopping list for local Tescos after school run, need matches and pillar candles if they have any ...!, some tinned food, could do with some more milk, battery pack for phone on charge. I think I am as prepared as I can be now. Almost ...!
We're on firewood, bottled gas for cooking and flaky electricity.. I'll probably empty the woodshed this evening, bring the rest of this winters wood inside, just in case. Nothing much I can do about the trees in the garden.. if they fall then I'll be out there turning them into logs for next winter.

It’s going to be a very tricky crossing from Cowes for us at 1:30pm tomorrow…. All earlier crossings today are now full….
I'm guessing it simply won't happen. (everything cancelled)

Well here at the northern tip of the New Forest we've had a light dusting, nothing like enough to cover the grass. More snow looking unlikely... boooo!

Location: Whiteparish (a few yards north of the New Forest)
Finally!!.. first snow. As of 7am, we have about an inch with light snow faling. -3C ish, wind 0 to very light.

You can compare previous years at the below link.
https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/snow-and-ice/snow-cover/ea/20171001-20171120
Compared to 2016, there is far more ice coverage overall.
Thanks for the link
I've just been through the same day in december (14th) in every year since '98. The two years that stand out as being anything like this year are
2010
2015
good news?.. not sure, but seing 2010 come up isn't exactly bad news.

To my untrained eye the greenland-iceland gap is looking narrow.
Anyone got some past years data to compare?

Went for a run across the New forest
and got horizontal hail
it's just not fair!

Got caught in it all on the way home last night.. I was down to 10mph on maximum wiper speed, could hardly see the edge of the road.
Just wished I had my camera with me, the lightning was spectacular. (west Hampshire.. I was near Stockbridge at the time)

I remember the needles famously had their anemometer destroyed in 1987. I beleive it recorded 106mph before breaking.
