Well Northallerton has its food festival today so whilst I’m hoping it stays fine, I’m also hoping for a mahoosive storm! Will be keeping an eye on the radar!

Can hear thunder to the south of me, looking at the radar I have an awful feeling it's going west of me
Just rain in Northallerton now, had some thunder but sounds like it’s on it’s way to you now and skies getting lighter.

Well the red blob that has just passed over Ripon in North Yorkshire brought absolutely nothing it's warm, muggy and hazy but no rain so far....
-
very fine snow in Northallerton, no doubt as it passes through northwards.

Things looking more promising down here now...shower incoming and wind gusting.
I'm hoping its getting worse by the time I get back from Ripon later, a boring day of looking bright blue skys and melting snow.

I'm due to be going from Northallerton to Manchester by train on Tuesday for work, any thoughts on whether I can expect delays etc (based on current forecast?)

I have to commute from Northallerton to Malton so everyday I have the joy of crossing the moors which has been good over the past few years to give me my snow fix. A few times this winter Sutton bank has been awful but next week looks like it might be worth working from home.
I'm usually quite on it thanks to silently following you guys in here and the madness of the model thread but I got caught out in the early December snow. Must have only been a couple of cms on the road but going down sutton bank that night was probably the most terrified I've been as a driver as I was pretty much just a passenger! Sheer luck that I didn't crash, I was crawling down it but it just got to the point where the weight of the car wanted me to speed up and because of the snow I had to go with it.
Definitely not liking the look of next week from a commuting point of view but from a building snowmen with the kids and seeing how this all pans out - I couldn't be looking forward to it more.
Sounds scary, I hate Sutton Bank at the best of times, surely though they would close it? I go to Ripon every day so am hoping the roads will be ok, but saying that, the high street isn't even usually done so not sure what chance we have with the other roads!

just starting to snow lightly here now, excitement levels starting to rise as met office said wouldnt have anything till mid day not sure if its just hit earlier though?

Lee wind and I'll be corrected if I'm wrong is where winds rise over mountains and then hit colder air aloft. Colder air being dense forces the warmer air back down compressing it and making it stronger. Since it's a rippling effect the conditions can effect a small area or course sudden variations in one place. Like when I said from 10 mph to 50 mph and then back down again.
Thank you that makes sense then when I consider the geography of where i live.

Definitely Lee wind effect hence the very strong gusts being recorded around your area.
Could i ask what Lee Wind effect is? Tried to google it, definitely didnt come up with anything relating to weather lights starting to flicker here now which is very unusual, might have to locate the candles just in case!

Why is the Isle Of Man reporting such low winds speeds?! Odd, 69mph gust at Leeming, looks pretty bad for the A1 atm - http://www.xcweather.co.uk/
I'm in Northallerton, not far from Leeming and it is very very gusty!

Can anyone tell me if we could get hit by this storm that looks set for middle of next week? Maybe a silly question as i know its quite a way off but i am still learning and understanding the wind charts are way above my skill level at the moment?!

thanks for that Matty. i have been lurking these boards for over a year now and am looking at some of the learner areas but its all very confusing! still, slow and steady, one day i hope to be able to look at the charts and know what they mean without having to sit talking myself through them lol!

I'm North Yorkshire bordering North East and whilst i would love to see a really good storm i don't think i want to experience what happened at the weekend either!
