eta: I unscientifically measured 20cm on Tuesday morning, but it was likely more as that was a place it could have been lifted from in the winds (but not drifted into) , however there was one spot "top of a patio table type one" that I know was cleared as I was using it to clear my snow shovel.. there's a fresh 5cm / 2 inches on the top of this table since then which of course includes any daytime compaction/melting so overall I reckon.. epic event!

Only a couple of centimetres of fresh snow in Aberdeen fell overnight. In undisturbed areas we have been consistently sitting at around on average 4-7cm of snow since Monday morning.
although not nearly as much snow as quite a few in here, I’m pretty happy overall despite last night under performing.
I imagine the snow melt will be off the charts over the next few days for us in the north.
very impressive for the City!
I was watching the radar on and off last night and it was weird how it "skirted around" the more easterly/north eastern tip area that had the sat/sunday dump (quite unusual for them to have more than the inland shire), but then gave a few cm's top up in the early hours , so "evening up" the total depth overall
I can only remeber 1 other time when it was like this, apart from childhood memories where I can't recal exact dates/places, where the whole of the N/NE/NW got a "fair share"
quite amazing pictures from everyone, especially catching the thundersnaw!

coming down to the nowcasting again! amazing to see the "blobs" coming in from the North but being headed off at the pass to go East.. not often the City gets snow from this direction when no-one else in the shire does : D Enjoy!
going to be an interesting evening.. no wonder this type thing can't be forecast- 7

Hopefully the more seasoned posters like @Kirkcaldy Weather might make comment on the implications for us if winds have shifted to easterly flow up high
I would love to hear too, . but if the winds shift even remotely N/Ne/E it could be that mythical "beast".. it's not often it happens on oor eastern side. but when it does it does, and this from west today, the other, side is just weird/extra.. I don't follow the models I just look at the radar and out my window, now casting so to speak?

So after my hubby taking all the credit for My earllier snow digging (not an unusual occurence, lol!) he decides the birdies need fed.. no oatmeal in the house and he can't find the birdseed in the garage. I raked the cupbords and found my son's energy drink powder (now out of date) contains nuts and seeds in a powdered form! mixed it up with some (cooked) lentils and bread to thicken it..
we are going to have some of the beefiest wee birds around LOL
still snowing here- 10

Looking at the radar it is moving this way but i feel the hills will take most of it..
@101_North radar showing pink in your general area.. i know you love frontal snaw so maybe this could be your time..
you might make it.. not sure about this side of Bennachie (Kemnay) but I can see it lurking! 4 hours clearing yesterdays deluge, thankfully it stayed off long enough to get that done.. was very pretty this morning though wasn't it, I measure 20cm at one point but after yesterdays winds who knows qhich bit was the right bit to measure.. it was a heaps though. It's certainly been a nowcasting event though hasn't it
Typically the grit lorry was supposed to come up and fill the grit bin yesterday, but they never made it up oor hill.. the joys :D- 10

Yes my local forecast has us down for a nice seasonal day.
Calm before the storm?
2 scenarios imo
1. hype to instill panic, again
2. the SSEN do not want to get caught on the hop, just in case..
I'm still charging everything I can with a passion though!!- 4

What a bonny day (looking out that is) and as always neighbours come together to clear private roads
gotta love Snow for bringing people together x- 11

This is perhaps not the right time.. but is TOORP still a thing (I'm older than my profile suggests!)
I still use that acronym in other places.. but remember it was invented here- 2

Here we go it seems. Lull didn't last long. Wind has gone south to northwesterly in short time now averaging 25mph gusting over 50mph.
Pressure levelled out around 996.2
Getting pretty noisy outside.
Temp has also dropped from 7.8c to 5.5c over 15mins.
I'm under the blankets if anyone wants me! (phone and torches charged, and food ready for re-heating on a gas hob despite the freezer contents probably lost now)
stay safe everyone x- 5

Power still out here and in nearby Sauchen. Friend in Kemnay asked SSEN today about the compensation and got told that they're not paying anything out....hah, good luck in keeping that story going...
Whole issue has brought out the best and worst in people. Kirkwood Homes though should hold their heads in shame. Their HQ facility is next to Sauchen (and are even building a controversial housing estate in the village). They got power up and running yesterday morning via a generator but made no attempt at all to help people by supplying hot water etc - instead they put up a container offering firewood for sale at, shall we say, uncompetitive rates. Hope the media get a hold of the story.
Driving round today its amazing how concentrated the damage is in areas, for example on the south side of the A944 at Tillfourie it's like a tornado hit, whilst other side of road is untouched. Some amazing destruction at Pitfichie as well, can see photos of that on the Monymusk Facebook site.
As for weather, misty and murky interspersed with brief bursts of rain. Calm, 6c.
That's absolutely shocking if true
there's supposedly a reporter coming to our neck of the woods and I suggested that instead of going to the areas still without power they go to the ones recently restored for the "Community effort" stories.. like our local Kemnay Cafe and Butcher taking themselves off to Alford and Monymusk once the most of Kemnay was restored.
I imagine our power will be unstable (Mobile is still very poor signal) for a time to come while the SSEN gradually properly reconnect the lines, not just emergency repairs
As for the compensation, the facebook groups seem to be latching onto the standard terms but if you do read further into them there is , of course there is!, a disclaimer, if it's not a planned outage then it depends on the category of the storm, as far as I can tell that makes the claim worth about £70 (as I imagine this "Arwen" storm will eventually be classed high especially for insurance purposes), and in short I'm glad I shoved my freezer food outside in the sub-zero temps after 24 hours as the excess on the claim for defrosted freezer meant a claim for that would not be worth it, so "use it or lose it", or give it away cooked was my thinking. Fortunately by the time I had finished cooking it (we have gas hob) the power had come back on so was able to get 2 freezers up and running to cope with extra frozen things.
we are going to have to try and make a claim for some of our trees as it does likely needs Forestry professionals? someone said earlier it's not just a friend with a chainsaw that is needed, although we already had to clear one tree using a "friend with a chainsaw" as it had falen across our access road blocking 2 households in.. the others are under some neighbours trees and also crossing "Water Board" land so they do need cleared relatively quickly for their access but because they're collapsed under other trees we also can't just go chop them down and have the rest then collapsing fully causing further damage.. last thing we need is the water board not able to access their reservoir.
Anyhoo rant over again.. what's the scoop for Tuesday? (please no more wind!!)- 9

I'm sure it has all been said in the last 2-3 days already but just to add my 2p, we finally got power restored late last evening, friends and neighbours still don't have theirs. Just for perspective We have lost 600-700 year old trees but we are all safe, and managed to keep warm, as thankfully we are not "all electric".
I love snow, (and am not really a newbie around these forums, just don't chat much these days) - but just why oh why did it have to come at the same time a storm had turned off the power (really cold!!) and no Mobile (so no pretty photos) - also cos of the ice/snow could not get car near enough to house to run the phone chargers, even when the mobile signal had came back
However I would just like to thank Netweather and this forum for their balanced view cos on Friday morning when "red warnings" etc were coming out about "Arwen" I knew exactly where to check first (this forum, rather the press hype LOL) so had as much of a plan in place as I could (candles, anti-surge batons for power flickers, torches etc) as it turns out they weren't quite enough for our particular location but it was the best that could be done given the information
We've had our scenery and garden view altered permanently and while that will grow back over the next few hundred years, it makes "chasing the snow flurries" a little less fun, this year anyway
I hope everyone else up in our Aberdeenshire neck of the woods is still keeping well, I know there are massive community efforts ongoing to try to get Hot Food and drinks to those that may still be in need of them, so please if you know anyone that you are still out of touch with, try everything to let them know there should be somewhere local they can go, or will deliver to them, if they are in need. Just because you hear a "town" or "village" is now back on, do not assume it's all of it especially if you cannot contact someone you're trying to
Stay safe all xx- 21

Aye. Other areas north of here, west of here doing much better. Game not over yet but locally this could end up being a kind of mid-table easterly performance. Not up with the best here but ho-hum, no greetin' about it
6 minutes ago, Ravelin said:We didn't clear the drive this morning as there was only a covering and it was the same when I got back from walking the dog around 2pm. It started snowing not long after, and I've just measured 8cm outside the front door, which I'd say has all fallen in the last 2hrs. I'm not surprised that the likes of Aberdeen, and especially Dundee, are chaos since they have been under similar blobs much more frequently.
10cm+ here in Kemnay in just the last hour not seen the likes for a decade or so

It's because "touch wood" we are on the Lei or Lee side this time unlike Arwen or the new year wind. I mean it was still blawing a hoolie enough to wake me up at 2.45am (I hate wind!) BUT not enough to put the power out (though it did flicker lots!) or upset the bins (all other furniture long since pinned down) and most likely was enough to be blowing the trees into their roots as opposed to against them, which is what brings them down .. lets hope Jocelyn is the same, however everyone please stay safe and do not go out unless you have to x
