Or brilliant depending on your perspective ! And yes, got out of the village OK this morning, but once I got down into Huddersfield it was the most extreme driving conditions I've ever experienced in an urban area, cars sliding slowly and elegantly into each other like some kind of slow-motion bumper cars, and then the drivers falling over as soon as they got out. Almost comical if it hadn't been so unpleasant for those involved. Luckily I managed, more by luck than judgement, to avoid bumping into anyone else, although the sensation of slowly loosing grip going up a hill, then starting to slide back down, was rather unpleasant, and just goes to prove that even in a 4WD you're not immune to tricky conditions. I was only saved because I managed to drift into the curb where there were no parked cars, then very gingerly reverse against the curb until I got back to a more level piece of road, at which point I was able to turn on a snow-covered driveway and then very very slowly inch back the way I'd come. Not nice.
I could tell it was going to be bad when the ice scraper just slid smoothly across the wife's windscreen and then I had to hack at the ice with the corner of the scraper to get through it. Luckily, today, although I managed to sit with feet off the pedals spinning the wheels of the van to make 0.5m progress, my route was fairly ok (once I pulled over, reversed and laughed at those who were previously up my b'side failing in the same way) out to Elland via a looong route! Had the same horrible feeling last week though of going down a hill at Salendine Nook in the snow. Once I ran out of right steer I braced!! Not nice!
A nice covering down the hill here though, again, a good 2+ cm (still snowing slightly). Scar Lane, although gritted at 5ish this afternoon is covered and looks icy!

Major set back of being at the coast in winter
Glynn where in Hudds?
There's a Scar Lane at Lockwood. Could be there...?
Golcar mate.
Light snow again..
-
Had moderate snow here about 30 mins ago, now returned to light, small flakes/ice pellets. As PTFD said, looking misty on the tops around here.
Oh hang on, as I look out of the window again it is snowing moderately. Main road at the bottom (Scar Lane) now getting a covering. Judging by the manoeuvre a taxi just did, it looks slippery again.

12Z NAE looks to keep any precipitation as snow over Western West Yorks and central pennnine belt until 12pm tomorrow - obviously this could all change as the night wears on.
-
A slow thawing has occurred here today with cars losing some cover.
Been light snow on and off from about 2:30. Now intensified more, with good size flakes. Got a light dusting now.
-
A few heavy-ish bursts for 15 mins with small flakes here. Now heavier with bigger flakes.
-
Eased off here now, but a nice covering anyway.
-
Snowing here too. Smallish flakes (with periods of larger flakes on and off) but being blown about so settling everywhere nicely!
Nice pics by the way DB.

Yes, very frustrating, when I went to bed last night it was snowing with about 1.5 cms on the ground, expecting to wake up to a good covering, but was surprised to find this morning the covering was the same, even though it was still snowing. In fact, it's only this last hour or so that has given a more noticeable covering, I would say it's over 2 cms now. Being a bit obsesive about this I'm quite anxious to get as much as possible out of this, because looking at the mid-range models it looks like whatever falls now is likely to stay around for quite a while, but the opportunities for further top-ups look somewhat limited as it stands.
Yes, it was disappointing to look outside this morning and see nothing but clear pavements/roads. It snowed heavily earlier and left a thin, wet layer on the grass etc. Roads are full of slush. Currently snowing, but I am guessing the temp & DP are too high, as it is melting readily.
Still, at least it is snowing.
-
Definitely snow now, and has been for 30 mins. Hopefully setting in for the night now.
Certainly is snowing now down the hill. Although, eased off a bit, the cars are white and teh roads/pavements have the icy/slushy layer, so hopefully if it continues through the night, we may have a nice covering by morning, even if it is only a cm or so.
-
Sleet here, we did have snow for about 10mins.
Another local lad, Golcar!
Slawit here.
It doesn't seem to know whether it wants to sleet or snow at present, seems to be switching from one to the other every ten mins
yep, looked out before I came upstairs and it was drizzle. Just looked out now and it is snowing again. No settling anywhere, although it is small flakes and verging on moderate.
-
Golcar - you're only a a mile down the road from me, you sure you're not getting snow ? (it's starting to settle here now, where there wasn't already lying snow from last week of course !)
About 10 mins after I posted, I looked out and it was just snow. A bit has settled on car windscreens only (not much though) and it now looks like sleet again, and light at that. Seounds like the view towards Scape will be a true winter scene again then in the morning?
-
Just about the same elevation as you, where abouts in Hudds are you? Some fun and games a little later, hopefully.
Over at Golcar. Still sleet, but the flakes are more noticeable now.
Would be nice to have another covering, but unsure if it will happen.
Unfortunately, my weather station temp indicator got wet in the summer and is stuffed, so I can't track temps or DPs.

Lampost/car roof/windscreen watch here shows sleet at the moment.

Hi OON,
Could you add mine to the map too please.
http://www.smudgpop.plus.com/weather/current.htm
It is Huddersfield (the dot will cover it nicely )
It is a bit blue (not dirty blue) but will no doubt change as it is still works in progress, mind you the mian data is there for now.
Cheers

Sorry to reply like this, but I don't appear to be able to edit my first one.
Anyway, If you put the dot centred over the 'Kirk' part of kirklees then thats roughly where I am.
Cheers

thx for the reply OON.
Well it is a relief of somesorts that it is only cabled systems that are affected (one less thing for me to worry about ) however until it is installed (hopefully this wed) I won't know. Fingers x'ed.

Well Mondy and CloudBurst, I have no TV aerial on my roof and neither do any of my neighbours. In fact the closest one is about 100ft away across the street. So hopefully I should have no problems.
I think the lightning conductor idea has gone now. If we get struck, I can't imagine that the anemometer would last anyway, regardless of if there was a proper conductor on it or not.
Just out of interest, has anyone extended the cable from their anemometer to the wireless solar unit (on a WMR928NX) and if so what did you use?
Seems to have provoked some discussion this thread.

Hi OON,
Could you describe where such a device would be placed and how much it costs. I've never heard of one of them before and Googling it returns some quite technical stuff.
As I haven't erected the anemometer yet, I don't know what probs may be lurking there, but I'll earth it all the same if only to try and alleviate any static probs.
Anyway got me stuff sorted, hired the ladders and Thursday, hopefully, should be the big day (well in my eyes anyway ).
Cheers

CloudBurst - thats my thinking really. I'm only gonna provide a simple earth bond so the static from the anemometer can dissipate easily, so I don't get any spurious readings or it stops working.
Probably will earth it to my outside security light housing.
