Interesting on the last couple of radar grabs, the system seems to be expanding quite quickly as it moves into the Channel. Will it keep its intensity is the question?
Wouldn't the humidity today suggest it will?
Last week's "Sussex n' Kent" storm stayed together and it wasn't even humid!

I'm in reading services. Do I drive to bognor regis, gave a swim and watch the storms come over the channel, or do I sit tight ... tough one! I may have an earlier night overall if I get down there... what's everyone's thoughts?
You want to be near the A27 in case it shoots NE, although current posts seem to suggest a more northerly track?
Not every good at reading weather stuff, but Brighton maybe better - then you can access A27/A23. You'd be close to Ditching beacon.

Reckon i know that spot. Thats where the North downs crosses towards Chaldon? With the airport to the right?
If i didn't have work in the morning - i'd have come up and joined you. I missed out last week out of sheer laziness and that french storm doesn't look like it will get here until about 3am.

Some lovely atmospheric photos - thanks for sharing!
No problem at all. Just odd that it wasn't a hot day and certainly wasn't expecting it. I'd missed the cloud formations you'd photographed, which i presumed were a bit earlier this evening?

Really odd.
I was expecting the transition from yesterdays hot to todays "autumnal" weather to be the real killer storm. It was relatively cold today so interesting what was feeding the storm. I presume it just brought its energy with it. Where was the heat?!

A few towers going up to my south of me here in Wimbledon.
That could be what i'm seeing in Croydon.

Looking west/South west from here in Selsdon/Croydon and pretty sure theres a developing cell above me. Somewhere around Reigate/A23 corridor towards Purley.

No photos from me this time. A shame as it started in Croydon, which is coincidentally where i live. But by the time i was ready i'd missed it and would have to head east on the M25 during the peak.
Next time.

I'm curious, do you guys prefer a thunderstorm in the daytime or when it's pitch black in the middle of the night? Personally I like watching them at night.
For me, the daytime ones offer extra photographic challenges so make the chasing worthwhile which can lead to all sorts of funny stories.
Night shots are fairly easy to sort out but the day ones require work - finding a great spot to get cloud formations (if your close to them they usually look rather murky in the UK), as well as the strike itself which can be hard to snap if you don't have some detector rig.

Once this heat settles in, is there any chance of triggers in the SE?

Well Croydon, where i actually live, got completely missed. I slept through any rumbles this morning. I've got a night turn tomorrow which means a late Saturday night.
Quite prepared to drive out tonight if anything produces overnight, plus no bank holiday traffic!
Thats the problem with this weekend - the motorways are going to be packed.

Got a couple of (mammatus) images from yesterday....
This was over Horsham - to the west of Crawley, taken from an aircraft approaching Gatwick.
And this taken from near M25 looking south towards Crawley (you can see the Mammatus developing on the bottom right by hedge).
If you'd have been traversing the M23 south, you'd have bet met with a pretty ominous view. Incidentally there had been rumbles on Thursday but didn't see any real flashes.
