Hey! I hope you and your son stay calm during today. I can totally understand his freight. You are under a thunderstorm warning from the MetOffice. This doesn't mean you will definitely get thunderstorms, just that there is a general risk in your area of thunderstorms developing. It's very hard to predict where thunderstorms in the UK will hit as our weather is influenced by so many different sources so we can't say for definite if you will or won't see thunder.

I would recommend that you just explain to him that bad weather could be on the way and try and calm him the best you can when/if thunderstorms happen. Even if you don't have thunderstorms, you will most likely have some very heavy / possibly torrential rainfall so be safe tonight.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate it everyone.

It is very difficult to say to be honest with you. The greater chances of thunder are further east so I would say, yes there is a chance, but reassure him that it might not happen.

I was terrified of thunder when I was younger. I then started reading kids weather books and saw a documentary about storms, and from that point it flipped to complete fascination (to the point of almost obsession really when storms are around).

One thing I can’t get my head around is that the models seem to keep showing a peak in CAPE after the rain and storms have largely moved on through. I’m finding that a little bit baffling and some cause for concern regarding degree of lightning potential.

    Thank you for your help

The problem is nobody can say with more than a vague degree of certainty that it won’t affect your area, but I would say to your boy that where you live is probably one of the more ideal places to be as any lightning/thunder you do get will probably be very distant.

It’s an interesting one actually because I nearly wrote ‘prefers’ (as in the lightning ‘would rather not’ or ‘choose not’ to do a certain thing).

I used to be petriified of storms, and my parents would try to anthropomorphise or personify the lightning and/or thunder. They obviously thought this would make it sound in some way nicer or friendlier, I guess - but in actual fact I think it was the discovery of the science behind the phenomenon that turned my fear into an addiction (same happened with beer but the other way around - “beer is your friend...” )

Maybe getting him interested in the science behind why it’s unlikely he will see or hear anything from these storms will help his realise it’s an amazing thing, or at least that he has a friend in the Synoptics, which can give a warning as to the likelihood of a storm approaching?

The situation today is a rather messy one so I don’t think anyone can say for sure what will happen but if I was still scared of storms enough to travel away from them I’d consider Aylesbury tonight, as it could be a perfect place to watch distant lightning in the cloud-tops without being in any real danger of hearing any thunder or being near any potential ground strikes*

(*Disclaimer: bolts from the blue do happen but are extremely, extremely rare. If either of you even sees one you’ve probably also won the lottery )

    Thank you for your help

I agree I will get him used to the science and I appreciate your input.

  4. Hi everyone, hope your all well,

I wondered if you guy's and girl's can help.

You may have seen from my previous posts I have a child with learning difficulties who hates thunder storms.

I appreciate its difficult to predict but I live in Wendover near to Aylesbury.

So I can prepare him in advance, could any of you experienced people help me to see if we are likely to have anything here?

I've looked at so many forecasts and they all say different!

I really do appreciate all your help.

Many thanks so much in advance it means a lot.

    Hi,

don't know anyone can really give you the clarity you need as this particular scenario is difficult to pin point.

As you are slightly further north I think any storms you get will be less intense as those on the southern coasts, but there will still be (potentially) a lot of lightning and it won’t all be intra-cloud (so if your family member is worried about the lightning then it’s worth knowing there is a very good chance of nearby forked lightning)

I used to be scared of the sound of thunder and it was that which I feared most from storms. Storms tonight could well be frequent and loud in your area (some shotgun thunder) - we just don’t really know yet!

Keep an eye on blitzortung or lightningmaps and you can monitor the speed, relative intensity and track of storms in and around your area.

    hope this helps?

Thank you so much for your help.

I'll keep an eye on the maps.

    Good luck yourself
