  1. Wife suggested cutting the grass today, first time since October, before it rains again tomorrow. First cut is always a bit of a battle, which I expected, but despite all the rain it was pretty dry.
A couple of dry days, sun and a breeze has worked wonders.

  2.  On Sunday I went an early morning Porsche club run to a breakfast meet, we drove across part of Dartmoor looping into N.Devon and briefly into Cornwall before breakfast at Strawberry Fields Lifton. It wasn't cold but was horrendously wet and misty, a bit like speedboating but enjoyable nonetheless especially as there's no salt on the roads unlike during the misery months of December and January

Yesterday and today we had two gorgeous dry, sunny and almost warm days, so both cars are now clean and shiny for next time

No threat of snow now, unlike the absolute trauma of this week in 1978, so I should be driving up to Race Retro on Friday but sadly it's been so wet that the show's been cancelled because of floods in Stoneleigh.

Looking on the bright side, all this rain means the reservoirs have filled up so the hosepipe bans shouldn't reoccur this year

Still the nights are pulling out, the birds are singing and spring is rapidly approaching, hopefully warm and dry leading to a long and hot summer

Agree with cold not killing bugs, feel the colder it is the more chance of catching cold/corona etc,

I've never had a cold family virus later than approx 25th April, or earlier than around Oct holiday week

There’s more virus transmission in the winter because people are indoors breathing on each other. Hot weather can kill the old and vulnerable, but cold weather kills more people

I hope that doesn’t mean more rain though.. What’s the precipitation forecast like?

Yes it is unusual for Lerwick to be the mildest. But it has an extremely oceanic climate with the average lows quite high for its northerly location. The scilly iles is mild all winter, with an average high of 10C and low of 6C, rarely gets cold down there.

Never thought I’d see a comment like that on these forums! I am surprised by the number of people on here who prefer mild conditions in winter - this forum has always been very cold biased and before I started posting in winter I thought anyone who dared say they enjoyed mild weather would be shot down like a rabbit.

But constant gloomy, rainy weather isn’t good for peoples mental health. A crisp sunny day in winter can boost your mood, especially when it’s been cloudy for so long.

I was a pharmacist for forty years, we used get older folk in all the time saying that cold weather would “kill all the bugs”. I used to tell them it won’t kill the bugs, but it could kill people so make sure to keep warm!

  5. I’m not keen on cold weather, but it’s winter and seeing the sun makes it bearable.  I really don’t understand the apparent love in the MOD thread for “deep cold”. However it’s snow I really hate, makes the roads dangerous, pavements tricky and generally screws life up. I’d be happy never to see it snow again in this country.

Think we all want Spring proper here, May/June! cold April's I cannot stand though, at lowish level proper snow isn't really possible

The snow at the end of November was really weird. It snowed in west Cornwall and around Ivybridge in South Hams, but not on Dartmoor where it was expected. We had a clear run to Okehampton and Tavistock on the 30th

  7. I've never liked cold dark winters and over the years I've grown to absolutely loathe cold weather. Personally I can't wait to get January  over and done with, not helped by losing both parents in that month, and look forward to see the evenings pull out and the temperatures rise. I love warm and hot weather with bright sunshine and being able to wear a T-shirt and shorts every day.

There was a north-south split as well as east-west split during the easterly spell just gone.  From Lincolnshire northwards many areas had sunshine and snow showers in the east, mainly dry and sunny in the west, which gave opportunities for going out for a walk in crisp, sunny and, for some, snowy scenes.  But further south it was mostly overcast as the easterlies brought in either frontal cloud or stratocumulus trapped underneath a cap on convection, associated with higher heights/lower thicknesses.  I did get a bit of lying snow in Exeter on the Thursday, though it was just a sugar coating apart from beside the roadside where it had drifted.  I did manage to make three snowballs and throw one of them at my window.  I didn't feel "cheated" so much after that - in Exeter any lying snow is generally a bonus unless you've got a channel low running into continental air.

We went down to Dart's Farm on Thursday. No snow but overcast and the wind chill was intense. Horrible.

Minus 5 and sunny is miles better than 9 degrees and wind and rain crud we now have. How can you possibly prefer this type of crud weather is beyond me and most people I would imagine!

I much prefer mild weather to minus 5, thanks very much. Fewer deaths from hypothermia, fewer people in hospital from falls, no more Covid 19 vaccination clinics snowbound and cancelled, plus we'll be able to drive to a family funeral on Thursday now  without worrying about black ice or snow-bound roads.

Old people used to say to me that cold weather was "seasonable" and would "kill all the bugs" somehow thinking it was better for them.  I'd reply that it might be seasonable, but it didn't kill bugs, only people.

  10. Personally I like the weather dry and sunny, even if it’s cold, rather than wet and windy. I’ve never liked snow because it makes getting anywhere difficult.

Those on the Model thread wishing for apocalyptic cold and snow should perhaps bear in mind that weather conditions have closed Covid vaccination clinics. Personally I have a 250 mile round trip to a family funeral next week and really don’t want to be battling snow on the A303

Why would anyone want mild now? normally it's wet, dark and grey, different a Feb 2019 but a one off event!

from late March, things change, me and most on here look for warmth, when it can be like summer

I’d like it mild now because I don’t like cold weather. I cannot understand the obsessive behaviour in the model thread and the delight people take in record low temperatures that would cause severe discomfort at best and loss of life at worst, especially in the midst of a pandemic.

Although I wasn't there at the time, I remember seeing reports that the Exeter area got a big dumping on 20 December 2010 (the Monday before Christmas, rather than the preceding weekend) with over 20cm in places, and with lying snow out to the sea front along the south coast of east Devon, though not as much in west Devon and generally nothing in low-lying parts of Cornwall.  I remember there being a lot of uncertainty over that one in the days leading up to it with some model runs (notably the GFS as per usual) deepening the low and sending it further north, which would have brought the dumping of snow further north but rain into the areas that ultimately got snow from it.  It was a very different kind of setup though (a northerly followed by a lobe of the polar vortex being stuck over Britain for a few days).

I remember that vividly, I had to stay in Exeter because I had to get to work. I left the car at the health centre and didn’t manage to get it out for three days

The synoptic outlook for next week reminds me of the third week of February 1978, which had more or less the scenario that I envisaged above, and it looks like one of a range of realistic possibilities for mid to late next week.  I wasn't even born when this event happened but as far as I'm aware it was intense and affected most of this region of the UK.

Of course that's practically the snowiest-case scenario from here and something rather less snowy than that or even non-snowy is probably more likely, but it's noteworthy to even be able to consider it as a realistic possibility.

I remember Feb 1978 really well, it was total chaos in Devon from the Saturday evening until Wednesday/Thursday. I've hated snowfall ever since.

Another event like that in the middle of a mass vaccination campaign, alongside the road accidents and hypothermia putting people in hospital, is the last thing that we need

I was hoping, in my life time to experience a 1947 or 62/63 type of winter, but alas am begining to feel this may never happen!  2010 showed that severe winter spells can still happen in this country. I for one absolutely loved it as it is my favorite type of weather. But, it definitely does appear to be getting harder and harder to get anything remotely wintery, especially for those residing down south in the UK.

I remember December 2010 and February 1978. Both were utter nightmares trying to get to work. I was a pharmacist before I retired and it would be just impossible for me not to get the pharmacy open with people needing their medicines. I ended up having to stay at a hotel in Exeter in 2010 leaving the car snowed in the health centre car park and my nice warm bed eight miles up the road.

One of the reasons I like living in Devon is because we have mild weather and warm summers, and very little snow.

    So,  snow no thanks.
