Yes, quite a substantial thunderstorm here in west Lincoln with a bit of hail as well.  Recent thunderstorms have tended to skirt around Lincoln and produce distant rumbles, but this one has come right overhead, so in many ways it's been more spectacular than the earlier ones that were more widespread.

Yep looking like a drowned rat Down here in hykeham while walking the dog. The gust front as it approached was quite spectacular. Intense rainfall. Lots of thunder and a few flashes of lightning seen. No hail down this end of the city. All in all apart from getting soaked, very happy

chance of severe storms, perhaps a few supercells, over parts of E England today, more in my Severe Thunderstorm Watch here:

here's a few charts of parameters that suggest a severe risk. High theta-w / high CAPE, some DL and LL shear (note significant tornado parameter) Lincs could be prime position

Will be keeping a close eye today. Not getting hopes up but it feels like one of those days where there could be a few mighty surprises.

  3. Well there is some potential today in Lincoln for something big this afternoon. Need this band of rain to move through and that strong June sunshine to work some magic.

Question? How come Storms like the ones we are seeing this morning associated with a large area of rain always seem to contain more powerful lightning strikes and louder thunder? Apologies if that’s a silly question but genuinely curious.

Cumulonimbus cells have been almost stationary to the west of Lincoln for the past two hours, but haven't produced any thunder (they're near enough such that if there was thunder I would hear faint rumbles).  Somewhere just to the west has clearly had a lot of rain so far today.

I imagine it being one of those days where if I was on the Tyne and Wear coast I would be in a frustrating no-convection zone, with convection going up a fair way to the west and low cloud rolling in from the North Sea.  Here in Lincoln there's no no-convection zone in sight, but the main convection is definitely a bit to the west.

Some lovely cloudscapes though this morning. Hopefully something happens for us later . Hykeham seems to be a sweet spot for hearing thunder in recent times
