I knew I would come to regret my bold claims that dawn would put on a good show. All the signs were there. Anecdotal, though it would seem so far this season a good evening showing would always be followed by an even better morning showing... except for this time. Still much to learn.

Really good showing in London and blessed with clear skies. Unfortunately I am in the office early tomorrow so couldn’t stick around too long but a good show whilst it lasted, much better than my last one. I get the feeling sunrise may be very epic if people get lucky with weather.

Looks as though sunset is a dud. Can't see anything on any webcams and not a single confirmed sighting on the Facebook group. Up to the sunrise gang to deliver the goods now! Dawn does appear to have been better than dusk on average (not that I would know, I am not commited enough, I am just going by what others have posted!), I wonder if there is something to it.

I wouldn't be too dismayed. The AIM charts are not the be all and end all. They are often unreliable. As has been mentioned in this thread, reports from boots on the ground from the NLC Facebook group is generally the best predictor.

One of those rare instances where I am hoping the AIM chart is wrong. Doesn't look great for the clear nights we have scheduled over next few days!

Aha, add me to the list of those that spotted that Western NLC! I too dismissed it as not being a NLC at the time, it was quite faint and hard to make out from my perspective. The shape I witnessed matches the pictures people have posted though so I am now confident we were probably looking at the same thing.

Huzzah! Finally. Not the greatest pics by any means but at least now I can say that I have seen them! I ran like a madman to my nearest vantage point when I saw the reports coming in. I have next week off work so hopefully I get further opportunities without worrying about being up late. Need to be careful hanging around London parks though, only so long you can hang around there without being asked what you are selling .

Looked like there was definitely something showing on the London webcams. Couldn't see anything when I stepped outside though in the brief window I had before the clouds took over.

I rushed outside after reports in Southern UK of NLC. No joy though. Potentially there is something in the below image (apologies poor quality) but I suspect it is just any remaining sunlight peeking through the breaks in the cloud.

I have been waiting for this since... well, last year.

Great photos!
It is my understanding that NLC's can still be visible in the UK until late Summer, albeit with much less probability. There is a comment some pages back in this thread by Weather-History seeing them in September in a previous year! The daily daisy charts also suggest there are some NLC's still out there but looking rather sparse now.
As to if the images are instances of NLC's, I really am not qualified in any way to answer that! From snippets of information I have been picking up in the last few weeks, there is quite a lot of "stuff" in the upper atmosphere at the moment due to volcano eruptions and wildfires. These have been leading to some spectacular sunsets in some areas. Perhaps something to consider also? -

Somehow, it looks as though it remained mostly clear throughout the whole of last night around these parts. Using the "Visit London webcam method" though, no NLC's to be seen at any hour. Those that were clouded out don't need to be disheartened by the looks of it, as there was nothing on offer.

Looking through the Facebook group link Arnie posted, this particular post caught my attention:

This looks a lot more like what I expect to see from how the tweet I shared before described them. Not drawing any conclusions from this but thought it was worth the share, if nothing else other than they are some cool looking images.

Hmph.
I thought last night was a definite done deal in terms of producing something. All the reports coming in from Europe, even as far South as Ukraine, I figured it was only a matter of time before starting to see stuff in the UK. I waited and waited but nothing. I eventually went to bed about 1am and set my alarm for 2:30am to have a quick peek but by then the weather had become far too cloudy. In any event, it seems as though the display didn't quite live up to expectations here in comparison with our European neighbours (or perhaps they are just better at camera trickery ).Speaking of which... I was speaking to a friend online late last night and suggested he goes and takes a look North. He managed to capture this:
Credits go to him of course, taken in Southern Sweden. He had never seen (or even really heard of) them before. Yet he casually just walks to his window and gets that on first try. Git.-

No worries! I should be more proactive posting these things when I find them. I often hold the mentality (incorrectly) that everyone has probably already seen it and put off posting them.
I guess when people first started studying Aurora's, there were similar debates about the different colours they displayed. E.g. What causes the difference in colours? Are they part of the same thing? - At least, that is how I like to think of it. Still, I wouldn't like to commit one way or the other about if the afore posted images are NLC or not.

Not yet. I did have a look on the graph after Thursday evening/Friday mornings showing for the fortunate amongst us. It showed no activity. I will leave that open for interpratation...

I am not well versed on social media. I was hesistant to post an image directly as I was unsure what the rules are surrounding that sort of thing but here is a link to the tweet, which I think should be ok? Here is the image from London I referred to earlier.
I guess whilst the next few days might see some downtime (quite a bit of cloud forecast), I guess now might be a good opportunity to ask some queries with regard to the SNR graph here:

Apologies if it has already been covered but I couldn't find much information on it. Queries are as follows:
- What does the "activity" represent? I understand its "noise" but is it debris entering the atmosphere at that point in time or just detecting stuff that is already there?
- Where is it "looking" at? Is it a specific area in the sky?
- How does noise affect forecasting prospects? I am guessing more noise is a good thing. Would noise detected that day suggest a more favourable evening or would it took some days to come to fruition?
