Could someone explain why here on the west coast of Scotland we currently have a south-east wind ? Looking at the pressure charts the wind is going straight from high to low pressure whereas I was under the impression that it should, more or less, follow the isobars.

Thanks. None of the factors you mention normally have much effect round here.
The only thing I can think of is the unusually high temperature in the high pressure area, but it is hard to see why that should lead to the disappearance of Coriolis.
