Yeah big diurnal fluctuation mostly due to the valley effect. PIeria is completely different when compared with the geography of a valley or an inland location. The area seems very strong in maxes due to being far from the sea and blocked completely by Taygetos and Parnon mountains. Essentially no sea breeze can reach there.
Sparta which is the closest station to Evrotas has also a big diurnal range again due to being inland and at the valley.

Following up from a previous post where I hypothesized that areas further inland and North of Sparta would have higher summer average maxes.....
Well it appears that the National Observatory of Athens has been running a secondary Hydrometeorological station in the depths of the Evrotas Valley around 10 km North of Sparta the past 4 years. The station is placed on the ground on the bank of the Evrotas River for hydrological research purposes. Below some pics of the Evrotas station and its position relative to Sparta WMO met station.
And below is how Evrotas NOA station looks the past 4 years. Notice the particularly pronounced summer average highs. Especially that July 40.5C average max. Again we are talking about only 4 years of data and it is a secondary station so some caution is warranted. In any case it does seem to favour our hypothesis that the depths of the Evrotas Valley might just beat Cordoba at a European level when it comes to summer highs. Both Taygetos and Parnon mountains provide a constant foehn effect during the summer and this is particularly obvious from the Sparta WMO station data alone.
Judging by average highs and lows the location seems pretty continental for South Europe standards. What's your take? -

A noteworthy average max of 27.0C in Crete so far in November
https://web.archive.org/web/20231117140715/https://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/chaniacenter/NOAAYR.TXT
I seriously doubt we ever had an area in Europe so far inside November to register an average max of 27C.
It's a first for Greece. Ts will cool down a bit the next few days all over Greece but we might still beat the 24C record avg high of 2019.

Yes must be awful . Good job there is air conditioning at night so you can sleep
Yeah like that's how I slept last night.
There is nothing else you can do in Athens. In the big 1987 heatwave we had more than 1000 people dead in Athens when ACs were not very common. The next year ACs were everywhere. In 1988 a second heatwave of same intensity hit Athens but we had practically zero victims...
ACs can be life saving when u deal with brutal heat.

They’re welcome to it. To go on holiday and have to sit in an air con all the time really defeats imho going on holiday
I mean you still have the nights. But even these are dreadful in Athens with Ts barely dropping below 30C early in the morning during heatwaves.

My in-laws went to a small town near Lindos, Rhodes and came back Thursday. They normally love the heat and will sit out in any sunshine but even they said it was too hot at times. Just looked on the weather station local to where they stayed and it was 37c yesterday and is already 30c at 8am so its going to be another hot day.
Stay safe Athens Heat.
Lindos is an oven during the summer.
The good thing with Lindos is that EVERYWHERE you go there are ACs. This makes it bearable
Ts soared to 40.5C yesterday in Kranidi NOA met station
