The way the heat increased this morning it was almost inevitable, wouldn't be surprised if some far flung met station goes slightly higher once returns are in.
To be honest it was 34.5º at 10.30 in Heathrow, I couldn't believe my eyes and was thinking that the all time record was under threat - but then the temperature started dropping away, but obviously it's risen again.
-
Wow what a day though, all in the space of a few hours. A nice warm sunny morning with temperatures around 24 just before noon, before a southerly wind sent the temperature rocketing above 30 in the space of around an hour - I've never really seen that before as normally the breeze picking up has a moderating effect. So by 2pm it was sunny, windy and red hot - felt like walking into an oven every time I walked into the garden.
Then a quick storm has washed all that away and we're overcast, fresh, and 21.9º!
In fact it looks like it's brightening up again in the south, could we see it be sunny again and warm right back up? May yet get the BBQ out...

Dave the July record has gone, 36.7º at Heathrow.
An very impressive max of 30.8º here before the storm, and some temperatures locally above 31º
-
Whoa, that was short and sweet, heavy rain for about 5 minutes dropping 3mm, loads of thunder and lightning, and it looks as if the storm has already passed through - a whopping drop in temperature of more than 7ºC, from around 30º to 22.6º
-
If this storm hits it's going to be biblical.
I've never heard so much thunder it's literally every heartbeat.
-
Loads of thunder to the south now, and lightning.
-
I think I can hear distant rumbles of thunder to the south...
Anybody else picking that up?
-
Currently 30.3ºC here after a high of 30.8ºC.
Other notable local high temperatures...all of these are Vaisala roadside weather stations.
Prissick Base 31.1º
Nunthorpe 31.1º
Ushaw Moor 31.0º
Bradbury 30.7
Great Stainton 30.6º
Tow Law 28.4º
And Teesside Airport 31º
-
Crikey it's 31.0ºC in Ushaw Moor, and let's not forget that this is a council operated Vaisala weather station, not a poorly sited home weather station in someone's garden.
We can take that as a true temperature.

I think there was a 36.5 in July 2006?
-
Paul. previous experience would indicate that a sea breeze is likely in the next couple of hours, taking the edge off temps in NE England. It happened to us in July 2006 (I remember our conversation about it when I lived in Ferryhill).
Hi Dave, long time no see, you never got that 30 degrees in Ferryhill did you, but fear not the latest temperature at Bradbury just near Ferryhill is 30.7 at 1.40pm!
Agree about the sea breeze but to be honest I never expected it to get as hot as it already has done today anyway.
-
Well I think I might have maxed out at 30.8ºC as it's became a bit overcast.
Temperature has slipped back to 30.5º now.
Bradbury nearby has recorded 30.4ºC at 1.30pm.
Even Tow Law is at 28.1ºC
-
Latest temps in the NE..
Teesside Airport (EGNV) 31.0ºC
Here (Newton Aycliffe) 30.6ºC
Bradbury 30.2ºC
Ushaw Moor 30.0ºC
-
Equalled my all time record with 30.3ºC.
Edit: She's gone, 13.22 we have 30.4ºC

Booom!
30.0ºC
Only the 4th time I've ever recorded such a temperature in 12 years, and it's only just gone 1pm.
Previous top 3 temperatures, all from July 2006....30.3, 30.1, and 30.0.
29.7c loving the storm forecasts from torro and estofex for our region later,
We could reach 32c today
The storms can do one, I want a BBQ later!

29.9....
-
yep same here mate im recording 29.6 it was 24c at 11.30
It's almost like a wave of heat has pushed up from the south on that breeze, in minutes. I'm watching the Durham Council weather stations website, and could literally see the temperatures rising at the same rate all over, with the stations a few miles north lagging behind and then catching up!
The nearest one to me is Bradbury, about 4 miles north of me, and at 12.50 it was recording 29.4, and those Vaisala roadside weather stations are obviously very accurate.
I'm at 29.7 now.
Even Tow Law over 1,000ft up in the Pennines was 26.1 at 12.40 and up to 27.4 by 12.50 as the warmth sweeps through there.

29.2C now...it was only about 24C an hour ago.
All time record here is 30.3C set way back in July 2006.
-
Actually the stiff southerly breeze is making the temperature rocket - 28.7C now.
-
28.3C here in Newton Aycliffe with the breeze really picking up.
That might put paid to the temperature climbing higher.
-
Never mind wind, is it going to snow?

40c in the UK, absoloutly not, never in our lifetimes. even 30c is getting very difficult to acheieve, although 30c is likely again at some time in the future in the south of UK , We hit 30c here a few select times during the warm years a decade ago, but doubt in will happen again. Even getting over 21c is a push, which is utterly ridiclous for mid summer, the climate is definatly cooling
Fail.
1990 37.1 deg Cheltenham 3rd august
1911 36.7 raunds 9th aug
1932 36.1 several sites ,London 19th aug
1976 35.9 Cheltenham 3rd july
1957 35.6 Camden 29th june
1900 35.1 Cambridge 20th july
1948 35.0 milford 28th july
and the most amazing one I left out.....
1906 35.6 bawtry 1st September..................yes in September and bawtry is in YORKSHIRE and not southern england
The Bawtry reading is impossible IMO. It's not possible to get that hot that far north in mid summer never mind September. I call false reading.
