  1. The radar on postcode zoom in is magnificent!

It has been nearly all pink/ dark pink / red for the last god knows how many hours covering a vast region without exception.

If this really is a sign of things to come, then in future our miserable predictable atlantic systems will be most fruitful, and possibly the most venomous set ups for snow fall in Britain.

Does an eastern system ever produce so much precipitation??

That is if the earth does infact cool , and that the atlantic systems would still keep coming.

as Andy says easterly winds are the equivelent of this set up for eastern england and the london area and home counties. They pick up so much moisture from the north sea then dump it overland. These fonts usually fizzle out way before south wales, typically in berkshire or the swindon area. This today is a battlefront scenario that london can only dream of, I used to live in essex, althoughnot strictly english!!, and very occasionally we would do well out of such a battlefront, if it progressed a little further east. Lovin tonight, South wales really needed this!! :)

This front really has stalle now its not going anywhere fast!!!

  2. Updated radar showing another heavy wadge of snow about to hit us!

I've known easterlies produce very heavy precip but not really over wales - the eastern counties of england take it all or most of it before we get it - seems the thing with snow - it struggles to keep it together over long land masses

Next set of GFS models will start coming out at 3.30am - the 00z so we'll see if it upgrades the ppn anymore!!!!!

See what you mean and it looks really heavy too!!

  3. you won't get that much better than what we have here right now - I am from cardiff originally and can remember winters of old when I used to do my paper round and have to walk in between 4ft drifts (I'm only 44 mind) - and that was near the city centre - so for that to happen that must have been damn severe.

Would you believe we've got a lampost in the front garden outside the house - one we put in - in the style of an old london lamp - very picturesque in the heavy snow drifts - almost like the front of a xmas card!

Same age as you 44!! was brought up in essex and like you can remember truely cold winters in the 70s and early 80s, really pleased my kid can get to experience this with all the scaremongering about snow being a thing of the past. I really believe that the last couple of years have been a turning point back to winters of old. Just had a phone call from my other half, she is a cop up in maesteg and they have had a real hammering the last few hours!!! :)

  4. Too right - the south east gets tons from their easterlies - the scots and north east englanders get theirs from the north easterlies - the north westerlies feed cumbria and north west scotland and north wales and the atlantic dumps it on us!

Am I right in saying that for south wales this is a dream scenario, i mean a stalled atlantic front in the face of cold easterly winds. Its fantastic how it is now but it just makes you appreciate what "could" happen if those easterly winds had a real cold origin!! :drinks::) Still ponty sounds truely fantastic at the mo!!!

  5. gonna have to make sure i'm wearing sun glasses with all this snow everywhere - otherwise i'll get flippin snow blindness

not sure that will happen - forecasters are giving overcast and gloomy even after the front has cleared tomorrow and latest gfs has -1 or -0 for all of the daylight time and then staying cold for overnight again! - the snow that has fallen will certainly help to keep temps down as well

fingers crossed, noticed a bit of a lull in precipitation with really heavy bands appearing in about an hour (bridgend). Fantatic to see this part of the country get its due

Agreed, we can only sneak the snow in under cover on the coast, once exposed i fear were like the lost boys in the sun.

But there will be no sun, certainly no clear skies anyway??

How long can we fight the atlantic??

This is an amazing battle so far, however the atlantic will slowly pick us off with a few jabs here and there , weaken us, before steam rollering us into submission and slavery once more.

A Fantastic lost boys analogy, all I can say is I have lived in south wales since 1988 and this is by far the best winter weather I have seen. I have great hopes for late jan/feb

still tipping it down here, hows it looking in swansea in terms of depth

  6. If you check out sat24's picture of this - the animation - the front seems to be manufacturing new bits of itself to tack on the back - so who knows how long this is gonna continue - the GFS extended it from 12 midday to gone 6pm today as it has obviously picked up on this trend but I guess we'll have to see in the next set of models if it gets extended anymore

Only worry is that as sun rises temps will tip it into rain and we will lose our cover

  7. sounds fair - You defo got a thing for hob nobs haven't you and that lampost - you wanna watch that - oh yeah you are - lamposts are for dogs - I think

Yep - the one above the train station - right at the top - the mountain road that leads to beddau - Tom would rather enjoy himself in Las vegas + the thing that annoyed me with that concert was - he was cele brating his 65th birthday and I would have thought to give something back to his home crowd - he'd perform without charging them a ticket price to get in - but there ya go - he didn't

My other half's a singer too - does shirley bassey/celine dion/ and whitney houston tribute shows all over the uk

Too right you would think someone in his position would have made it free local event and even layed on a free bar!! that would have sealed his position as a legend.

Back to the weathe absolutely peeing it down here now!!!! Just opened a bottle of wine and put on the snowman dvd!!!! no work for me tomorrow wvwn if it turns to rain111 :)

  8. If it gets to about 3.15am and it's still snowing and I don't think it's gonna have a problem with that, then it's been continuous for 12 hours

    3ft + drift snap

Slightly off tompic but my other half dragged me along to ponty for the tom jones homecoming concert a couple of years back. I was surprised how hilly the place was and also how disinterested Tom seemed in being back!!!. Are you way up on one of those hills???

  9. -12 in two nights time (thursday night)

I think you're looking good for a few inches

Where you are I would not be surprised at a - 4 but I think you are pushing it for minus 12. Interesting that this snow event could mean that we only have a 5 day mildish (in fact not mild but seasonal average) before it starts to turn cold again :drinks:

  10. Ice queen, where are you in swansea??

Its already heavy here (near sketty primary school), and for the next hour maybe the radar is showing increasing precipitation, rather like earlier on about 7pm.

I think this will white out the roads good and proper up here, and at this time of night with hardly anyone using the roads it could well accumulate,no sign of a gritter at all, but not sure how low this will go.

Think it may well be blizzards shortly.

Dont you just love the atlantic systems.drinks.gif

I can never remember a snow event with such local variation. For example here in Llangewydd court bridgend we have near 4 and half inches of level snow. Whereas down the road literally 2 miles in aberkenfig they have a covering of slush, similarly Llantwit Major has virtually nothing and that is not too far away either. Yet porthcawl which is on the coast has a fine covering. Very very marginal stuff

If only we could install a giant pivot point somewhere off the south west coast,it would never end.

At what point though do you say enough is enough??

    2foot? 4 foot?? 6foot??

I was thinking of packing some snow up and sending it to the south east ,seeing as they are missing out BIGTIME.

All the lamposts are having a really good time, really getting in the party mood at the moment.

Late night for me as there is no way i can get to work now !!!

    Snow day, snow day !!

This is sad I know but last year my brother in february made a mini snowman and still has it in his fridge!!! :D:):):)

  11. This is shocking coming from teachers in South Wales.

Every effort should be made to open the schools tomorrow.

Infact were i headmaster, then i would have you there at your respective schools right now salting, shovelling and gritting the paths, and surrounding areas, to make sure the children of the future are given the best possible opportunity to progress up the educational tree.

Your IP adresses have been taken and been sent to Gordon Brown as i type.

Dont worry hell be out soon, and who would want to teach those terrors anyway.

Lampost is showing moderate now, slight increase in last half hour, and more importantly its still snow.

I think you overestimate the dedication of the fine teachers of south wales, we are skivers just like evrone else and we all know there is nothing better than an unexpected day off, particularly if you have a snow obsession :drinks::drinks::drinks::drinks:

  12. Haha i started writing going to the exam earlier, i argued with the headmaster saying carmarthenshire education board should have joined with powys and ceredigion agains the exam proceding and then there mite have been more of a case and he told me that people who live in close proximity could stil lmake it and therefore it was unfair on them so i said this school as a datgylch(i dnw the english word sorry) of around 20 miles and half of thats brecon beacons national park or on the outskirts, Glanaman, Garnant, Gwaun cae gurwen, Brynaman, Cwmllynfell, Ystradowen, Ystragynlais etc. So i told him he was being villagist :lazy: (racist but to villages) he said that the situation layed with the exam board and you can always do it in the summer then i fought ide better not argue anymore :lazy: and then we got send home early.

villagist!!! lol you deserve a pass for that one line. Seriously coming down in Bridgend at the mo 4 inches in my back garden now!! :lazy:

  13. How many teachers are on this forum? I teach in RCT - they have just pulled home school transport for tomorrow. happy days? cc_confused.gif

Got to laugh haven't you, i think i was happier than the students today when the snow started coming down. slightly worry is that reports of snow turning to sleet and rain just down the road from me in aberkenfig. Still heavy here in bridgend :drinks::drinks:

    fingers crossed!!!

  14. I doubt im gonna make it into the exam tomorrow some deep drifts forming here and theres more to come snow has become lighter dont know how much more there is to come however the radar isnt working for the future anyone else noticed?

Looks like you should consider writing this exam off. Stay up all night lampost watching, if all your mates turn up and sit it, at least you will always remember what went wrong!!. I cant see many people in south wales turning up for anything tomorrow, unless of course we have the nighmare of a gradual rain transistion.

Should not really be saying any of this because I am a teacher!!! lol

good luck if you do make it in!!! :drinks::drinks::drinks:

Please anyone I really need to know, anyone near Carmarthen, Cheers Guys

I'm 7 or 8 miles south and quite a bit higher than the town itself. The main(ish) road near my house is passable with care (atm), the lanes I walked along earlier were probably just about passable with a tractor or big 4x4.

I'm pretty sure it won't be half as bad in town, if you stick to the main roads. Altitude seems to be making a big difference. And, it will melt quick if the temps rise much more...

Check out BBC Travel, they've got reliable, current info.

Many thanks for the reply. Supposed to be Teaching in Trinity college but cant imagine too many students managing to turn up :shok:

  16. Hope so, they are also coming from the east here to :winky: I have to say, we didnt see it accumulate this quick back in feb, cold get as much as 6inches if it stays like this maybe? Looks like i wont be in school tomorrow!! fingers crossed

Yes absolutely fantastic in bridgend this evening, lets just hope it can stay this heavy and this cold throughout he night

  17. So you've come into our forum for a fight eh!!!!!!! mmmmmmm "Britain's financial GREEDY Centre" oh and Pontypridd has 35,000 of the most discerning people (and the rest of Wales) - we don't suffer stupid life wasting traffic jams and we have lots of lovely country side and open spaces - and I suspect you're on this forum cause you're jealous we're about to get 30cms of snow!!!!!!!!!!!

We're planning to set up a Met Office in Wales - your english one ain't too good anyway (over paid directors on £190,000) and they can't get the weather right to save their lives - we have a pile of guys on this forum that could do a lot better - so expect to see this development in weather forecasting in Wales shortly

Turning to sleet and snow nicely now in bristol channel should hit swansea in about 2 hours
