  1. The following June was a real shocker though. It took until June 28th just to reach 20ºC here, with several days having sub 15ºC maximums.

May had more 20ºC+ maximums than June did that year.

  2. Not sure about the summer of 1921, that is really an example of a summer having a very warm spell in the middle with the rest of the summer not special.

Summer 1999 would be another example with a warm July sandwiched in between an average June and August.

  3. What about 1980?

August. Cool, dull, and wet. northeasterly winds gave the southeast coast less than 10 hours of sunshine in total in the first 9 days of the month. 97 mm of rain fell in 45 minutes at Orra Beg, Antrim, on the 1st - one of the highest hourly rainfall rates on record. The downpour was very local.

September. Warm overall; at 14.7C CET, the warmest since 1961, and we would have to wait until 1998 for one warmer. There was a great deal of sunny, dry weather in the SE, although it was wet in the NW. There was a severe gale in the north on the 12th

  4. I was in Turkey for the first half of September 2006, so I'm not sure what it was like back here. I remember September 21st though, very hot with clear sunny skies (and I believe a date record of 29.0ºC was set somewhere)

August 2000 was sunny here, 2001 and 2002 were reasonable with a few hot days. 2003 was clearly the best August of the decade (34ºC here on the 9th). 2004 had a hot start before turning into a washout. 2005 was average overall, with 30ºC right at the end.

2006 was a huge letdown after the record breaking July, 2007 was cool and dry. 2008 was terrible with day after day of overcast skies. 2009 wasn't terrible here, but only one hot day on the 19th.

  5. 1890 is the only time September was the warmest month of the year (14.6)

1992 was the last time September (13.4) was cooler than May (13.6)

It could be warmer than July. That has only happened 6 times: 1795, 1902, 1821, 1875, 1890, 1895.

September 1980 came very close as well, and was warmer than July in the Manley CET series.

  6. Although summer 1993 was cool (Highest temperature only 25.5ºC), it was fairly dry here with almost half the summer rainfall occuring on just a few days (June 11th - 25.9mm, July 9th, 17.0mm, July 16th, 10.9mm and August 22nd - 21.1mm).

  7. September warmer than June is not that rare.

Looking at the CET list, September has been warmer than June in the following years since 1900 (27 times) It probably happened several more times before as well.

    1903, 1907, 1909, 1916, 1926, 1929, 1946, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1964, 1971, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1997, 1998, 1999.
