1. I'm edging to-wards South Yorkshire getting a pasting tonight

    It's already got one!!

Best 'snow-event' since February 09, and looking like surpassing that the way things are looking.

Brief lull arund 10 mins ago, but as i speak the 50p's are again falling from the heavens.

Around 3 inches cover, drifting to >4 in certain places - cars abandoned, snow sticking to house walls, no idea where the kerb begins/ends...

Just like the olden days :winky:

And the best thing - we were forecast a clear, but cold day today

  2. Temps still hovering around the 0 mark here - beautiful crisp winters day so far, wall to wall 'dazzling' sunshine.

Approx 0.0000009 mm snow has so far fallen - hoping the warm sector in the front currently leaving Scotland doesnt spoil things later..

Text from a few lads at the SUFC vs QPR game say it was an 'interesting' journey down the country earlier this morning, navigating through sub zero temps & black ice!!

  3. As a note, it means that so far this year we have had a temp difference of 71.1oC...from a low of minus 38oC in January to yesterdays high of 33.1oC

Coops - you have just basically summarised, weather wise, the main reason why i hope to reside in that part of the world one day

Like many, im a fan of weather extremes - that is just fantastic

Real winters, proper summers - like they should be http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif

  4. Two big NFL football playoff games today, I'm watching New England vs San Diego at Foxboro MA, where it's about -7 C and clear, not too brutal but the players are having some trouble handling the ball.

But this is nothing compared to the next game, due to start about midnight GMT in Green Bay Wisconsin, currently it is -17 C with enough wind to make the windchill -27 C. And it will probably drop a few degrees during that game, if you get any coverage of it in the UK, have a look, it should be quite brutal there (New York Giants in town to play Green Bay Packers).

The two winners get to play in the Super Bowl in a couple of weeks.

That will be a good deal warmer.

This pattern reminds me of Jan 1976, so if that holds, February could be a lot milder in the east, in 1976 the anomaly went from about -5 C to +5 C and reached record warmth late in February.

It is also rather chilly here on the west coast, some snow yesterday although most of that slowly melted today in the weak 5 C sunshine.

Roger, nice updates with regards to conditions over the big pond, as always.

Just watching a repeat of the NYG GB game on Sky Sports, and boy does it look cold - something that most of cannot particulary comprehend until it is fully experienced at first hand

Temps like that are to many of us, as i say, in comprehensible - think that lowest temps i have experienced was across in NY a couple of years back, Nov 06 or Feb 07 if i remember rightly - absolute dumping had just occurred around the state, remember flying into JFK and admiring the sites below of snow covered plains, but thinking that maybe my suitcase isnt as prepared as maybe it should have been :)

Always find it difficult to play any outdoor sports in any temps below around 3/4 degrees celcius, breathing wise, so the players in the game have my utmost respect :)

  5. Just a note guys regarding this thread - really enjoy the constant updates, the continuous posts relating to copious amounts of cold, then blistering heat really does keep me hooked - probably my love of the extremes which leads me to think i will one day end up living out in the NE USA.

Gents/Gentesses ;) , based on past experiences, at what point would you say that the seasons 'turn', noticeably, based on observations only? Obviously there are the official meterological dates regarding when one 'season' transfers to the next - but as i say, based on experiences, do these dates actually relate loosely to the 'realfeel' change in conditions? Is there a trend whereby you expect a certain weather to deliver around a certain date? Is this failry reliable?

Hope this makes sense http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif , quite hard to portray what is meant...

As mentioned - Is one of the best threds on here - Keep it up eh :D

  6.

..hi, dont know any weather specifics but i do know from a friend out there that it startd snowin at 1930 hrs in nyc. dont hav any other info than that..oh and that they all expecting (Via local media) pretty much what is written above. i e finish by thursday etc. hope that helps :-)

Hopefully - got a flight landing at Friday lunchtime at JFK

Any updates, whether forecast or real time, muchio appreciatedio !!

  7. Well - what can i say. Here we are at 20:50 in S12 (Sheffield) , and the picture outside is a throwback to the eighties/early nineties - the main road i live on is insurpassable to all vehicles, - the most snow i think since the early nineties , and the schnee just keeps on coming!!

Been snowing readily since 12:15 now, only started sticking around 16:00, but easily have 6-7 inches of lying snow, and up to 9-10 in the drifts.

All this after my downbeat mood of last night - very memorable event, even if it probably will have all gone by this time tomorrow!

PIT - Whereabouts in Sheff are you?

  8. Allenar

Not sure where you are in Rotherham, but that may be a factor. I am in Brinsworth and we have light drizzle. Just been speaking with my mother in SW Sheffield though (Dore) and it has been snowing for 1.5 hrs there and has just turned really heavy. The height is everything. If you are in Wickersley, you should start seeing something. Personally, I am off to Dore in the next hour or two. Awful traffic, say the media? Who cares!!

Hi - im in the S12 area of Sheff, and has been steadily snowing since 12:15ish, slight dusting on none recently used cars, struggling to settle anywhere else - could be very interesting tonight when the temps begin to fall away - even now the temp is hovering around the 0 mark - going by Paul Hudsons ramp on the news around 35 mins ago!!

Been a while since any note-worthy event in these parts!!

  9. Did you pick up much in the way of snow yesterday? The one feature of this cold spell has been the lack of snow. The clipper system which passed you yesterday went well to the South of New York. Means we're still locked in under the dry and very cold air. It's currently -8oc here with a dewpoint of -18oC.

Looks like the widespread warm up has been placed on hold for now; up until yesterday the 850s were forecast to rise comfortably above 0 for Chicago and New York by the 14th February; now there are only 2 members touching 0oC with Chicago showing nothing North of 0oC until the nether regions of FI. The chill goes on for a bit longer.

Doesn't look like being quite as cold, but the good news is that the Southern Jet kicks into life which will inject more moisture into the cold air.

All eyes are looking at next week when NYC has another shot at a storm; at this distance it may miss to the South again, but then again may still give us a dumping. Current forecasts going for Philadelphia southwards, but every chance of nudging North for a direct hit.

Evening WF - im a frequent and interested reader of this particular thread on NW - much appreciated are your often updates! Im annually in the NYC area annually, merely for pleasure, but guessing which type of weather to expect across the pond is half of the pre work in my opinion!

I read with interest the details about the possible event next week in the NYC area? Im there between 15/02 & 20/02 next week, this storm, if it does turn out to be a direct hit for the NYC, it forecast to be something to keep an eye on?

    cheers
