Some rumbles of thunder here/in nearby area a few minutes ago, tracking east to west, accompanied by very heavy rain. Now has died away.

A fabulous view of the storm late afternoon yesterday in Suffolk - some lovely bolts dropped from in the middle of this. I was with family so didn't have main camera with wide angle lens with me, these are straight from iPhone 13 Pro, but it was a brilliant sight and probably the best structure I personally have seen in the UK. Some mammatus on the back of it, and the stacking of clouds continued as it passed over. Heavy rain to follow. Not many lightning strikes from this one, a few low rumbles, it was a quiet storm relatively speaking but with this amazing structure to make up for it.

Very decent hour or so, had plenty of lightning in most directions - best one was a corking CG less than half a mile from here, just to the north, proper shotgun thunder and prickly arm hairs kind of stuff. Kids were very excited, the rest has been a bit of a messy MCS cloud to cloud affair, lots of strobing though which has been cool to watch. Expectations were very low on my part for tonight so I’m happy!
Similar here, mostly sheet lightning, tried with camera but caught nothing of note, rain has subsided and all the system is over at the coast now. But an interesting hour as I wasn't expecting anything much either!

Some higher level thunder, and busy lightning, with waves of heavy rain, currently deciding whether to go out to try to take some pics but rain isn't helping. Seems to be picking up a bit now.
EDIT: Absolute monsoon-like rain

Lost power at 1226 or so, and had to secure door of large outdoor tent that has my car parked in it. The wind was full force against the side - amazed it stood up to it as it has been outliving its life so far and probably not really meant for 60+ gusts. Many branches down, some trees already fell a day or so ago with side swipe of Dudley. Some fences bowed and some fallen. Power back on at about 6 - amazed and props to the sparks guys out there as it is 1. very gusty conditions to work in 2. many postcode areas were affected. Usually it has taken far longer to get power back for a lot less wind. I think because the ground was not sodden, or too dry, plus the trees are not in leaf, helped an awful lot today. Much clear sky during the day with this storm, which felt odd. Some of the strongest wind here for a few years now. Not sure what we will find tomorrow - flying out of Gatwick so fingers crossed things go smoothly (and less wind thankfully...)

Windy here, with a few rumbles from a passing cell to the west rapidly moving north, seems to have died off now but am heading in that direction for an appointment so will probably get there too late.

Absolutely torrential rain and some gusty winds here, since about 5 or so. Can't quite understand why there is no Met Office weather warning for this area? Have seen them issued for less. Concerned for minor floods, I expect to see gardens and driveways to be under water once it gets light.
EDIT: have just seen TORRO warning. Still heavy rain, wind gone and completely still

Some rumbles/strikes from something that tried to pop a couple of miles west of here. Now died off but some still some dark clouds and thermals rising as I can count 8-10 buzzards circling up on the edge of the cloud.

43 minutes ago, i luv snow said:
@pinball wizard did any of the previous snow in Ipswich thaw or has it stuck around, with these showers adding to it? Must be some amazing totals there by now - my parents measured 11inches on top of their wheelie bin, tables and chairs in garden, and that was yesterday evening!
We are just outside of Ipswich and had approximately that amount too over past couple of days. We haven't had much from any streamers today as they didn't reach us at all, nor any real new accumulations. Just had a light snow shower which has faintly covered up all the places where snow had thawed. Very cold outside, frozen everything solid after the partial melt today so lots of ice around. Even the new snowfall feels like more like glassy ice now.

Snowing quite heavily here now, with some wind so expecting some drifts later. Covering up everything that was cleared earlier.

Sprinkling of flakes in the wind here now. Good coverage here since yesterday and the winds have ensured varied surfaces are covered. First pic shows just how deep it got in places in our sheltered front garden. Roads could be worse but also sheltered from winds which typically cause drifting around here. May be drifts elsewhere. Caked snow on road nearby but generally easy to clear at the moment, snow is quite powdery and light. When it starts to freeze and get heavy it will be more awkward. We are not far from roads into town but always get stuck when snow falls due to being in countryside (just outside of Hadleigh in Suffolk).

Just had text from family member in Suffolk saying a 'mini' tornado just went by towards Boxford, I was watching from other side of storm thinking it might produce some scud funnel type thing on my side, but it was certainly ominous skies over that way. Storm has dissipated now or perhaps is picking up again around Stowmarket. Family member tells me it went right by them and towards house in field nearby. Some wobbly panoramics of the storm from my side.

A rumble and heavy rain starting just now, looks to be quite an isolated patch of a downpour, but right over us. Garden will be happy!

Rather grainy effort to capture the cell that was east of us in the channel and then has made its way over, lots of flashes, not much thunder. Mostly lightning in cloud however some bolts I seem to have caught on camera, although far away... and I am out of practice with lightning photography at the moment!

Small but noisy storm, shortlived near/above us, ended about 15 mins ago and lasted just as long. Beautiful heavy summer rain now, still very hot and with sunshine at the same time. It's been years since a hot summer thunderstorm like this. Everything very hazy above so hard to make out anything but I can still see areas of convection bubbling up.

The more I read, the more I am surprised that a heavier warning was not issued for Suffolk and similarly affected area. Many significant floods, both from rivers and from overflowing ditches and fields (in my immediate area). We are fortunate there was no wind on top of the heavy and persistent rain, with the trees still in leaf. Blessed Weather helping his friend living right near the river, I can relate to that. I spent 14 years right near the river it in the same town, down a lane where the river flooded the meadows. I remember a few nights of going outside every hour or so, monitoring the rising water, ready to either start taking items upstairs and finally readying my car to get out before the waters got too far. Thankfully the waters never got that high. Maybe my house was built with knowledge that the meadows would do their work. Maybe they controlled it just enough via the weirs and sluice gates nearby. House and contents insurance though, being on the floodplain, despite never actually being flooded, was horrendous. But I do know that even with no rain after the main event, the threat still exists, and doesn't subside quickly, so your friend will still have the floods for few days yet. I do hope there is not too much damage or health issues as a result.
