  1. Just what are the perfect conditions to guarantee snow?

Can anyone please tell me what weather conditions are perfect to guarantee snow?

What wind directions and temperatures should I be looking out for?

I live in North West Cumbria a town called Whitehaven right on the coast.

I always thought that if the wind were coming from the North East it was the 1st part of the recipe for snow, but the wind came in from Ireland this time bringing with it the snow. But this never made it to our coast, or it went straight over?

So can anyone please give me the perfect recipe that could guarantee us snow? What wind direction, what tempreture? “ Is the saying true that it as to get warmer than + 1 before it will snow” The only thing I notice more times than not is that the snow comes down from Scotland either side of us, over the Irish sea and down over Penrith. Anyhow any information would be appreciated. Thanks

  2. Only for fun

Lets have a little fun while we are waiting and watching for the next snow.

Place your bets on who in the U.K gets the next decent amount of lying snow?

Well lets have a shout at who in the U.K gets the best decent amount of lying snow in the U.K & also have a go at the closest date. We all know that it will be Scotland somewhere. So lets stay south of the border.

I will plump for Sunderland 3/1 bet on 17 Feb. Or Penrith 5/1 on 17 Feb

I know it's sad & I have nothing better to do loll :(

  3. I think we may get a chance of snow some time before spring.

What really winds me up is the TV overhype of snow. I always was going to be a near thing with bits here and there for midlands/s.yorkshire area. What we got was all these daily Severe Weather Warnings. I can't believe they dole out the SWW like ice creams on a hot day. It really is too much. I think they are covering themselves far far far too much.

yes it is dissapointing for those of us wanting snow. It is always the same pattern. Hype hype hype then warning warning warning then finally... a complete an utter wrong forecast by a mile! They should appologise in my opinion.

Sorry for my rant but it gets to you sometimes. :(

I know what you mean mate, even this site was giving us a 95% risk of snow for Friday & Saturday all be it for light snow. I checked this site on Weds and Thursday and still 92% chance of snow was given for most of the weekend.

The same with the weather after the news programs. I was that optimistic I took Thurs & Friday of work so I could enjoy a long weekend with my kids in the snow. I even bought a bloody sledge and a snow shovel. We did get snow at 4,30 am and it was gone by 6 am. But all these sites that give these predictions certainly got it wrong for our area big time, after giving us so much promise. We even got severe weather warnings on the BBC weather after the news. So what went wrong, how did they get it so wrong?

  4. Guess what folks a mini miracle? I got up at 4.30 am this morning to spend a penny and looked out the window we had lying snow “Everywhere” about 0.5 inch deep!

So I got the twins cold weather suits and gloves & hats and put them on radiator to warm through for morning. Guess what by 7.30 when I looked out window not a flake?

But I suppose I should feel lucky it was like the people who see the yeti. I did at least get a glimpse of it this year.

  5. I'm sure even southern England can see lying snow until about the second week of march, so thats 6 weeks, and since it is rather hard to nail the weather down past a week that gives a lot of uncertainly.

If snow makes such a big deal to people's life then move to somewhere where it snows more often!

If I thought I could move to a place that got snow lying for a month or so each year and I could have the same wage packet coming in, and have the same security as we have in Cumbria. As it was announced today on the news that Cumbria is the safest place to bring up a family in the U.K I would be of in an instant. I might sound like a bit of a nerd or a namby pamby over this snow worshipping but believe me I am not I am 6 ft 2 & 215 lbs and built like a brick onions house. The thing about the snow apart from the fun I can have playing with my kids, Is that it makes everywhere look so clean and fresh. & Quiet, I cannot really tell you what it makes me feel like to see freshly laying snow everywhere. I look forward to snow as much as a kid does to Christmas. Sorry if I come across to some of you as a sad sap but I really could not give a monkeys what people think of me about me and my Snow Fetish loll

  6. Well snow wishers do you think this weekend is our last snow of this winter or not.

I always give it until the end of February before I personally give up all hope. But to tell you the truth I think it’s been to mild of a winter once again. The last white Christmas I can remember was 1970 and the last good covering of snow we had was Feb 1996.

So can anyone beat a 12-year absence of any quality snow? Just what are the best weather conditions for snow? Which way does the wind have to be coming from for good snow conditions? As I have said I live in Whitehaven Cumbria right on the coast. Dose the Irish Sea have anything to do with us not getting snow. It can be snowing in Ireland and Scotland, and Newcastle but as soon as it reaches Whitehaven it as turned to rain. Any ideas why? Also where in the England gets the most snowfall? I may consider moving there?
