  1. Surprised at the lack of sferics so far on the NW radar/detector, especially considering there have been reports of thunder.

Some massive booms and continuous what only can be described as firework crackling like noises never appeared last night either. Saying that I saw no flashes, very strange. Unless they Fred Dibnah'd Didcot Power Station last night, I'd assumed it was storm related.

  2. The other method of finding one's height these days is through the use of a GPS (SatNav) - most of the time these are fairly accurate but there have been times when driving a car in coastal regions I have felt the need to have a periscope fitted because SatNav indicated I was driving below sea level!

Not as confusing as calculating QFE as a higher pressure than QNH in the Caspian Sea for landing choppers due to the local Baltic Datum being approximately 28m higher than the current water level of the Caspian.

  3. I'm sure it must be thunder unless a fireworks factory is on fire in the middle of the fields around me (South East Oxfordshire)

Loud boom like noises I've never heard in any thunderstorm before, explosion like, can't see any flashes. Then inbetween continuous crackles of thunder like fireworks.

Nothing on the met office data and the rain band has almost passed to the north, very surprising.

  4. The storm brewing around the MK/Bedford region is moving in rather random way (east to west) , however then it looks to be rotating very stormy feeling outside and very warm.

Summer Sun, reduction in intensity to be expected, theoretically should increase again on landfall.

Also look like that line of heavy rain near Milton Keynes is growing and extending towards the line extending from the main area of rain over Oxfordshire and into Wiltshire.

Rain continues in South Oxfordshire with increased winds at times gusty,

That band has stretched to the main rain area over the SW and with confirmed sferics in the last 15 minutes. First thunderstorm of the evening as the channel stuff not quite arrived yet?

  6. Thenorthernecho are saying it was a supercell which hit Newcastle, not sure if this is BS or true though. I can still hear the thunder rumbling in the distance, 3 hours after it all started.

Satellite imagery and that video of the tornado suggests the storm that went through Central England was a supercell. There was a small cell that went through the N/E area around 2-3pm but what is going through now, this band of rain/storms is a trough.

  7. i live about 20mins from sleaford, and my daughters friend lives there, she said it was the worst storm she'd ever seen, rotating quite severe

Lincolnshire is like tornado alley at the moment

  8. Looks like the same areas as last Friday have been flooded again:

Alza - this system is basically moving north east over the erm north east so it's not going to stop until it passes through, replay the last few hours to see what I mean.
