  1. It would appear that we have Hurricane Kirk!

Discussion and 48-hour outlook ------------------------------ at 1100 am AST...1500 UTC...the eye of Hurricane Kirk was located near latitude 27.2 north...longitude 49.5 west. Kirk is moving toward the northwest near 12 mph...19 km/h. A turn toward the north-northwest and north is expected through Friday...followed by an acceleration to the north-northeast Friday night.

Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph...120 km/h...with higher

gusts. Kirk is a category one hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson

scale. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48

    hours.

    Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 10 miles...20 km...from

the center...and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70

    miles...110 km.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 989 mb...29.21 inches.

  2. http://www.wsplc.com...er_Station.html

I have this (link above), quite good for the price (approx £80) though the touch screen stopped being touch sensitive after about a year & the temp.sensor can read a little high in direct sunshine.

Basically you pay for quality- several hundred quid is entirely possible; though this station will connect to your PC I couldn't say whether the software would allow you to share your data...

Also you need to give careful thought to where you site your sensor array; the wind direction sensor needs to ideally above roof

height as otherwise it will be subject to ground turbulence.

    Hope that's a help :good:

    san andreas fault area

Actually these tremors appear to be closer to the junction of the Queen Charlotte Fault and the Cascadia subduction zone; gotta wonder how much load this activity is transferring... Posted Image

  4. ...All trees except ash came into full leaf very early this year...

...The ash have really struggled round here; some are OK, but some still have relatively few leaves and some bare branches. I can barely believe that a native species like ash would have been so badly affected by the intense cold in December 2010, but maybe they were. Does anyone else have this?

I suspect that the Ash having a late start & some struggling may have more to do with the very dry spring as Ash

have a very shallow root system & are hence very sensitive to soil moisture levels.

The Ash around these parts were a good 2 weeks behind all the other deciduous trees but most have now

    recovered quite well.

  5. Being an East Anglian, Jim Bacon and my namesake from WeatherQuest get my vote. Both are proper meteorologists and explain things clearly, concisely, and without flim-flam.

Agreed - I've met Jim Bacon and he is a a most excellent person who has a deep knowledge of Meteorology backed by 40 years of experience,

Chris Bell's Texan accent is also an exotic bonus in any forecast

Gotta say though the 'new' regular Look East weather girl (Alex Dolan) is too skinny for my taste...

  6. ...I've seen some strange expressions in some weather forecasts of the Met Office, for example: "Outbreaks of showery rain" or "occasional Outbreaks of rain". I think they are pleonasms, aren't they?

Possibly they are pleonastic, though it could be they are just expressions of the uncertainty often associated with this type of weather.

  7. A rather nice day today- nice mild feel given dewpoint of around 12C and 90-95% RH values, but temperature only around 12C currently. Light to moderate rainfall during mid to late morning, and then moderate rainfall- showery in nature- early to mid-afternoon, with occasional heavy bursts at times. Slight mist in the air with wind non-existent.

Diabolical day today, its been raining on and off all day with heavy bursts and it has that horrible dark november feel to things, really the worst start to summer in a long long time, temps immaterial.

Two reports, same area- compare and contrast!
