  1. I think that in the US many of the snow ploughs are owned by privateers and are called out and paid by the local authorities when needed. Can anyone confirm this? To me this is one way we might make things slightly better. Around here, as in many places, the minor roads and cul-de-sacs are still almost impassable (our road is a skating rink this morning with lumps of frozen snow inbetween sheet ice). Had a local farmer popped a blade onto his tractor and been paid £500 for a day's ploughing, we might not have had everything shut down for two days.

Another thing we could do is, as someone else mentioned, be a little more independent and get things moving ourselves. Down my road I think only two people (me included, of course) have taken the trouble to clear their path and around their cars. Everyone else sits helplessly and waits for salvation from somewhere rather than getting off their butts. Obviously older people aren't going to be able to do this, but a few enterprising teenagers could make themselves some pocket money by offering to clear people's paths rather than spending all day playing in the snow (yes, Number One son, I'm looking at you).

As most others have said, I think we've become accustomed to mild winters in the South and have forgotten how to cope. I remember my mother putting salt on the path during the 70s and 80s when it was icy, but when I did the same yesterday passers-by looked at me as if I was crazy.

I also agree with some of the comments wrt driving. As someone who drives to France every year for the skiing, I've learnt how to cope on snow, but many have no clue. Also, a spade, some sand and a cheap set of snow chains in the boot should be basic equipment whenever travelling in potentially snowy conditions.

  2. Snowing hard here on the Northants/Cambs/Lincs border and has been for about 45 mins, but it's where its falling onto melted snow its not laying very well as despite having upper air temps at -5, down on the ground it's still hovering just above freezing. However, the GFS models for today show cold air moving further South during the day so if this happens, and the ppn continues at current levels, we could see a couple of inches of fresh snow. If the slush freezes the roads will become a nightmare.

Also, it could be hopecasting, but on the wider radar picture it looks to me as if the main ppn band is stalling just below Derby/Notts and curving back SE again. Good for me, but not so good for the chaps in S Yorks hoping to get more snow.

  3. Just around 1o C here at the moment with DP -0.1o. According to the NW radar GFS overlay, the 850 temp -3o line is right above us. It feels very marginal at the moment. The fallen snow has been melting steadily from cars and roofs with no icicles forming. Although I've seen the the 850s inch southwards today I think they need to drop another 2 degrees here to be on the safe side. I shan't be staying up for this one though - still pooped from last night. Early to bed and early to rise to see what the morning has brought us.

  4. Just measured on the car and other spots - 6"/15cm - not the 7" I guessed at earlier. Still, more than forecast and pretty impressive. Next question is how long it will lie around and is there any more on the way? I can see a moderate lump of PPN (radar shows as rain at the mo) in a line between Oxford and Watford and seemingly moving up the A1. Will it get here and what will it drop, I wonder?

  5. Just heard on the news that the A605 between Peterborough and Oundle is completely blocked westbound. Just thought I would mention this if you were planning on travelling.

Thanks, but no-one's going anywhere. All schools closed (we think) and people making arrangements to meet and make snowmen

Surprised to see that it's still snowing, despite the radar showing that it has cleared. Mind you, the radar seemed too far North last night too.

  6. Ok last pics I promise but these show the depth and mayhem currently in Peterborough. The very last picture is the dual carriageway of the A47!!

    Heaviest snowfall since Jan 1987.

That's a great picture of the A47. I can't believe how many people are struggling to work through some really awful conditions.

Speaking of which, here in Oundle we have about 7 inches of lying snow. It was just about waiting up until 3.30 AM for it to arrive...
