In 2008, 28 deaths from lightning were recorded, which is the lowest number of deaths recorded ever, and well below the average. (45 deaths-2007) (48 deaths-2006)
Four deaths from lightning in 4 states has been recorded thus far in 2009 by the National Weather Service.

Memorial Day, May 25th, is a day to remember, recognize, and celebrate the lives of those who fought and continue to fight for the freedoms of this country and others around the world.
But also, this date marks the anniversaries of 3 historic tornadoes in United States History.
There have been 52 tornadoes, rated F5/EF5 (the strongest and most violent in destruction) since 1950, and three occurred on May 25th.

The National Hurricane Center will rename the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
The hurricane scale was orginally set up in the early 1970's to measure the intensities of the maximum sustained winds in hurricanes.
