FRI: What a Difference a Day Makes!

Welcome to my Blog, bringing you my weather observations through North East Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, North Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and into the City of York during my daily commute from Melton Mowbray, by car and train.

Friday 11th January 2008:

What a Difference a Day Makes!

This morning in Melton Mowbray it was cold and damp, no frost but some mist and low cloud was hung over the town. Driving along the A607 to Grantham the mist developed into patchy fog which was particularly thick around Waltham-on-the-Wolds. On boarding the train and heading north the mist and fog cleared only to re-form again around Newark. Travelling through the Gamston area (North Nottinghamshire) the fog became quite thick with a touch of frost in the fields. By the South Yorkshire border at Bawtry the frost was thick and in Doncaster there was a layer of frost.

The biggest surprise of the morning came between Doncaster and York. The train slowed down just north of the M62 due to the River Aire bursting it banks, the entire flood plain on both sides of the railway line was full of water, with Eggborough Power Station looking like it was marooned in the middle of a giant lake.

The same had also happened a few miles north through Ryther where the railway line crosses the River Wharfe.

On arrival into York it was misty, and cold with not a breath of wind.

I will spend the day watching my trains home, the last time the River Aire burst its' bank in 2000/2001 the railway embankment was damaged and trains were replaced by buses.

Fingers crossed there's no more heavy rain to come. I see the River Ouse has flood warnings in place, I will see if the usual spots are under water when I pop out for lunch!
