Wetterfrosch oooh gosh, no lightning here, just a longish burst of heavy rain. Happy that it means that I don’t have to think about watering the herbaceous beds. There’s enough ground cover and unruly thug plants (very pretty thugs) to keep the moisture in. So just the veg patch and the many many pots and languishing plants waiting to be planted out. .. Today has been mostly cloudy with spitty rain, and a rather cool wind. So might spoil meself and light the logburner this evening. Rather hoping the coming return of heat isn't too hot or too humid, an acre of client’s lawn and a 200 yard drive verges to mow this week.

snefnug I must say that I didn't really expect such a sharp downpour, 11 mm within an hour or so, and on top of it one single lightning strike followed by a deep but far away rumble of thunder 30 seconds later. With heat returning to our shores, that came just in time and should make for some decent growing conditions in the garden!

2007 was the 10th coldest july in 60 years for Wales.. 2023 was bang on average..or a touch below.. Last year was below average. I keep mentioning 2007 every year as its one thats goes into the hall of fame... https://www.roostweather.com/ukobs/ukgraphs.php?type=mrscatter&field=2d¶m=Tmean-Rainfall®ion=Wales&month=7&graph_type=anomaly&climate=7100&start_year=1965&end_year=2025

snefnug No such luck here! Still waiting for that hot sunshine but, looking at the satellite picture, I don't think it will come, at least not until the wind direction changes to a more N/NWly by which time a much fresher airmass will have arrived. Looking forward to the MetO output which promises a sunny Wednesday and Thursday. In the meantime I'll have to be grateful for at least 20 C under all that cloud!

Another beautiful cool and clear sunny morning. We’ve had some overnight rain, judging by the damp state of the cat when he leapt onto the bed at dawn. Currently around 16c, but set to rise to 26-28 during the afternoon, so off into the garden now with a cup of tea, for a bit of deadheading. Mad Ruth next door is laying out humungous amounts of bird food, so in addition to squirrels, we now have Jays, rooks and magpies visiting, not to mention a squadron of pigeons. Overhead, the swifts and martins are out zooming around the skies. Perfick!

A lovely mizzle morning, with a very fine misty rain. When we first moved to this valley and this house 32 years ago in August, what mesmerised us was exactly that - the very fine cooling mizzle and the herons flying over the trout farm across the river. The trout farm is no more, and the herons, sadly, far far fewer.

Very benign if very windy day again. Wind was stronger and hotter this morning and has eased down to a rather nice coolish breeze and temperature. It’s been mostly cloudy, with higher humidity at lunchtime. More ‘light rain’ “its spitting” in the forecast for during the night, probably evaporate on its way across from Ireland.

I hadn't quite expected to get as much as 12 mm of rain over the past 24 hours, starting with a couple of heavy downpours either side of midnight followed by spells of light rain and drizzle lasting till morning. Very glad about it on my garden's behalf though. I have now crossed my June average of 94 mm (since 2003) and reached 103 mm for the month. Incredibly, I have on Monday picked almost two and a half pounds of raspberries with loads more to come. Don't think I have picked them as early as June in the past and can only think of all those long sunny days back in the spring as the cause.

It looked quite frequent on the strike maps quite a cluster of strikes going off at once on that.. If the thunder goes as very loud and pretty infrequent, big flashes of lightning overhead in the daytime as the 3rd batch of storms in may,it qualifies as a thunderstorms and very heavy of course for me anyway..The one to the SW was around every 20 to 30 secs,I called that a thundery shower..it wasn t loud or anything, then it merged with this overhead one..in May.. No only had 2 flashes of distant lightning and 2 rumbles of thunder in the night, along with that early rumble of thunder.. Just had 1 near torrential downpour 6.15 am.. But it does count as 2 extra thunder days so I ll take it.. Makes 2002 look awful.. How does this year compare with 2002 so far.. January 3 times better this year.. This february was much better.. This march was better.. April 2002 was twice as good.. May was 4 times better to 2002.. June is also shaping up to be twice as good..currently..

Snowyowl9 From what we had here I would have considered it more thundery showers as the strike rate was once every few minutes. You must have had a more active storm affecting your area. I tend to name a storm based off the strike rate it produces as follows: time between each strike: 3mins or longer: the odd rumble of thunder 30secs to 2mins: thundery rain or thundery showers 5 to 15secs: thunderstorm 2 to 5 secs: multicellular system Every second or less: supercell Note that this is just personal sayings that I have come to like over the years and is purely just based on the lightning strike rate and has no relation to the type or structure of the storm itself.

Snowyowl9 Oh boy do I know it!?! Got woken shortly after 6.00 by an impressive thunderstorm right overhead which threw down 13 mm in less than half an hour. Thereafter only light rain or drizzle at times. Luckily it was only damping a bit for the ribbon cutting and a first explore of our community garden by local people. Good job we had moved speeches, food and entertainment indoors. Was happy to see a really good turnout despite (or perhaps because of?) the damp weather!
