1. Thats just a couple of miles from where i live, I was at work in St Helens when that storm developed over me, it produced one flash and rumble, then as it head towards Wigan and Bolton it became more active, I could hear many distant rumbles. Thats been the story for the last three days, Cb's started to build over me at work then become thundery as they moved over to where ! live,

Damn it, why could they not wait till i get homeclosedeyes.gif

  2. Just had a nice thundery downpour here, fairly active in terms of electrics and dropped quite a bit of large hail too.

Just been for a cycle ride along the canal and could see the anvil and structure of that cell in the far distance the visiblity is good today. I guessed it was over the stoke on trent area so not that far out,

Heard a few rumlbles and saw 1 flash in a downpour when i was at salford quays this afternoon, some hail well

  3. well i suppose i should not be too angry at yesterdays damp squib as we got a small storm here during the evening, but the frequency of the thunder and lightning went less as it came overhead, to just one flash every five minutes after sounding like it was going to be a bit of a corker as it was approaching , but it was better than nothing, Feel sorry for thunder lovers who have seen nothing again, I used to be jealous of the south easterners for the amount of storms there, but it seem we are having more in the last couple of years,

seems a chance again today for this area, lets see

  4. i hate to sound negative but i think this high thunderstorm risk for us here has been over hyped, last nights imports did make it here overnight but it was just moderate rain by then, with no lightning, i fear the same gain. Those cells just to the south look weak ans are fizzlingnonono.gif

  5. still dull and overcast here, been spells of moderate rain earlier this afternoon but thats gone, apparently i am in the risk zone for a thunderstorm, but it does not look convincing, feels slighty humid but not that much, i can see brighter skies now to south as i am typing this, lets hope any storms that brew in the midlands drift towards north west england later

  6.

Im not being funny atleast you got to see some lightning... I haven't seen any lightning or heard any thunder since last july and that was in mexico.

Really nice day here today I just wish I could of got 1 flash of lightning in or something... SE most lightning prone PAH! last year everything went way north into the midlands.
Oh well we have the rest of the year to go.

I think we have not done too bad for thunder here the past few years, we normally miss a lot of the cells that develop inland, they usually form over the midlands then move northeast into lincs or yorkshire toward the north sea coast

Although last year we got a monster storm with constant thunder, when i opened the back window to take a look i could not believe it, no breaks between the rumbles and it lasted a good while, then came another of similar intensity, i think it was backbuilding,

I hope we get another like that

  7. Hi everyone dont post here that often ,but the lack of thunderstorms now is really baffling me, can anyone really explain why they are so rare now? Whats changed so much in the last 10-20 years, we would get about 10 thunder days per year and a least 2 or 3 nighttime displays with that as well almost every year for certain, now we might get 2 or 3 per whole year and thats if you are lucky. We have had one weak nightime storm and it now july ! Normally we would have has about 4 or 5 storms by now, in the eighties when it became humid a storm was inevitable, does not seem to work like that now , WHY ?? I want my storm fix ! I have a feeling 2010 will be thunderless from now on. and the same next year. could the air be heavier due to more co2 (less lift) just a thought.

  8. Weather warnings do tend to jinx things dont they lol, The best storms seem to come when you least expect them, when there is a warning in force and you wait for somthing to happen it never does. However going back a decade or two when storms where forcast they usually happened too! I remember Francis Wilson on breakfast TV forcast saying the heatwave will come to end in spectacular fashion this evening as thundery weather moves north acrooss the county,It got me very ecxited. Later in the dayI noticed the sky going a little dark,I opened the bathroom window upsatirs at the back of the house and noticed a line of dark cloud to my north east about 3 miles away spitting out CG strikes every 10 secs, they where very vivid, with constant low growling thunder, then another cell suddenly kicked off almost overhead to my west with cannon like blasts. The storms slowly moved away only to be replaced by another batch overnight. Good times.

  9. I am old enough to remember the seventies and eighties and it was almost gauranteed that a hot spell like the one we have just had would give at least one thunderstorm in a given location, and usually something quite spectacular as the hot spell would come to an end.

What baffles me is why its so different now?,I am not a weather expert or that knowlegeable in atmospheric dynamics but something has changed, this might sound silly but if there is an increase in co2 in the armosphere does that not mean the air is more heavy, now we now that convection is caused by warm air expanding thus becoming lighter and then rising rapidly causing cumulus the if there is enough energy cumolonimbus and thunderstorms, could heavy air be making this harder to happen, just a thought??.Could someone enlighten me because its very notable in my neck of the woods how thunder storms seem less and less.saying that we have had a few rumbles from this hot spell and a decent storm mid June with lots of close and scary CG strikes. But I think we just got lucky there.
