In this period they will be higher than usual equating to a higher risk of coastal flooding. T240 chart posted could result in extensive flooding at high tide, not quite sure about a storm surge - as the low crosses west to east to the north of Scotland as it did on December 5th as low pulls away winds veer more NW'ly, this funnels turbulent water towards UK soil. Some areas will be under fire. This raises the sea level here's a fact: 1 millibar change in pressure gives 1cm change in sea level. It also displaces water southwards with high winds the seas will be whipped up and angry, 2013/2014 although fairly disturbed had nothing crazy synoptically. It was just how it seemed to sustain.
Chart is perhaps not the best example but you can see the concern, more so for the wash northwards. At this timeframe not worth worrying about, but it ought to be watched closely
Based on what though Daniel, a T240 chart ?

From elsewhere all the same it would precarious, December 2013 was rough if I cast my mind back.
Why would they be precarious though ? These are just average/usual 'spring' tides which occur regularly. No idea how you can compare that to the exceptionaly stormy weather which happened in December 2013.

Yep I was looking at the Benson station close to here, which is a real cold spot, but very strange because High Wycombe not so far away was 3 degrees. Should have mentioned it was Benson I was looking at sorry!
Benson is well known for being a cold spot in this region. Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire ( 3 miles from my location ) is also well known for it's very low temperatures due to being in a frost hollow. Unfortunately the Rickmansworth weather station stats are no longer recorded/reported.

I would call it as a very average winter so far. Nothing more, nothing less.
Really looking forward to Spring though !

So sorry I upset you.
Ignore it Mickey. I can't see that you have posted anything which breaches the rules. Leave it the forum team and moderators to deal with.

Bit like going on a politics forum and asking people why they are obsessed with opinion polls or on a fashion forum and asking people why they are obsessed with frocks.
Strange comparison but for the sake of clarity I am asking a genuine question. It's a weather website, and weather happens all year round in one way or another. This thread is bombarded for a few days of the year when snow is possible. The rest of the year it's like a graveyard.
-
Because we can and there's nothing wrong with it.
This is the place to discuss the weather, and if snow is featured we have the duty to report it.
I post all year round during summer it dwindles, snow brings out the masses - it is no surprise really. as to why.
I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, just wondering why so many posters disappear for most of the year. ' We have a duty to report it ' .....?

its was snowing heavily up in battle & the ridge (they always do well up there) I was driving in it . all stopped for now though .Looks like we will be in for a bit more within the next few hours ,according to the radar
Glad to hear that......I'm in the process of moving in to my new home just off the Battle Road, had some snow there on Saturday

As much as I like snow, I can't help wondering why some folk are so obsessed with it, to the point where they spend hours on end watching the models/faxes/radar etc and post every time there is so much as a slight change in the offing ?
It's a genuine question. Given this is a weather forum, where do you folk disappear to when the seasons change ? Are you not interested in any other types of weather ? It's like tumbleweed city in here for most of the year.

I think those going round in circles dissecting forecasts from different forecasters (or the same ones at different times) are just going to tie themselves in knots here. You're in the SE of England, so clearly northerlies aren't the ultimate for snow and real cold, but it's cold enough (in the main), and there is a risk of some snow. That should really be enough - no matter how many times you read a forecast that's a variation on the theme, it's not going to change - so perhaps relax a tad and see what happens rather than continually going through this whole weather angst thing?

Well that was 25 minutes of near horizontal torrential rain and some very strong wind gusts here. All quiet now by comparison.
-
Squall line has just reached here. Impressive near horizontal rain and some strong gusts. Not sure if I could hear muffled thunder but I suspect it was most likely the wind howling.
i think its actually into NW london
Yes it is.

Hoping you folks up there all manage to stay safe.

The final minimum temp' of 2014 has been recorded and the lowest min' of the whole year is just -1.3c here; easily the highest for any year since my records began in 1963.
The previous highest was -2.2c in 1989.
That's quite astonishing given your location and altitude.
Just 3 miles from me is the Met Office weather station at Raf Northolt. It's located in a north west London suburb and 40metres asl.
Overnight the temperature fell to -5.9c and the night before -5.1c.

They have used the GloSea5 model for the wording of there outlook
Gloaea5 has high resolution in the strat and is currently projecting some HLB onto the new year. Probably as a result of forecast events in the strat during week 2.
Thanks for explaining that clearly.

A few of you have asked today about rationale for the (tail-end of) UKMO latest 30-day outlook. There is, of course, a dedicated thread elsewhere for this but I'll just confirm that GloSea5 output remains the rationale behind the wording of the outlook towards end Dec-New Year, with some interesting/intriguing signals into that period. That's all I can share at present.

Biased towards reality, you mean
Ssshhh. As you probably well know, reality is not really tolerated here, it's all about the frenzied rush towards the next ice age. Newcomers to this website could be forgiven for thinking that weather events only happen in winter, and only then if snow is involved
The fact that some of us have experienced an epic year for thunderstorms will be lost on many. Just one example of the many biases here.

Tired to reply and it disappeared so having another go! Go for it move down to the Sunshine Coast, great for your health and wellbeing in my opinion, as well as the weather of course!
That's the exact reason for making the move. Should it come off. I would be moving to Hasting/St Leonards.
