Weather cant make its mind up at the moment in Northampton , heavy snow , then sleet , then icy rain , then back to heavy snow. Wasnt expecting this until about 5pm , is the low moving faster than originally forecast and also in a more North Easterly direction.

francis wilson on sky has said it will last for atleast another 10 days all news channels have reported that goverment ministers have held meeting today regarding concerns about the cold spell. with grit supplies running dangerously low , all councils have been instructed they must cut the amount used by 25%. some councils are mixing sand with grit. if supplies run out and with areas set to get upto 20 cm of snow over weekend and monday , then surely a lot of places will become inaccessible. which may require the army raf etc to assist , this is just my theory nothiing to back it up.

Now the goverment are getting involved by cutting gritting for all counties by 25% and reports that there is still no end to this cold spell for atleast another 10 days. me thinks that with the forecast snow from satuday evening , sunday and also monday anywhere south of nottingham will be have serious travel problems as the min amount of snow is 1 inch upto a possible 8 in of snow accumulating ontop of what people have already got. this could be a very serious situation , i wouldnt be surprised if the army are not on standby

morning everyone , local forecast this morning on radio northampton , said possible 2 - 4 cm of snow to fall during the rush hour over northampton. On my way to work just passed 2 gritting lorries , so will be checking weather radar in a min . As for sunday my work has received a warning of heavy diruptive snow for sunday evening into monday morning. which will be fun for me as i have to schedule food deliveries [calculating how long it may take ]

i do wander if these models factor in how difficult it can be to disperse such a large pool of cold air. as what we are experiencing only happens once every 10 years , i doubt the models can cope with this , with the likes of gfs 06z and 12z being so different .

When do you think this cold spell will end. Some people on this forum think it will breakdown by wednesday next week. Francis wilson on sky said it is due to last until atleast mid january and possibly until 20th. With temps getting colder due to snow preventing the sun from warming up the land due to reflective nature of the snow. anglia tv say it is due to last for atleast another week . I beleive there may well be an attempt for a milder push from sw , but how far will this penetrate this immense pool of cold air. so IMO another 10 days atleast. with this sunday , mon , tue , possibly giving us another 2 to 3 inch of snow. with the strengthening winds turning to NNE direction it will feel more like -15c.

Will Northampton just miss out on any significant snow , from forecast it looks borderline?
