All you people on the east coast better hope that GFS run is wide of the mark - or else you will never want to see snow again for the rest of your lives Think it would be snowing every day for a week+ from New Years
Really an amazing run for the north of England especially the east, and given GFS seems to be the most on the ball temp wise with the current system then...
-
Had flurries of snow on and off for past hour or 2, but now its starting to come down heavy.
This appears to be a lot further north than was expected, as wasn't expecting the snow to start here until late today. According to the Radar the main band is almost at Sheffield already. Just hope whose ever in charge of the gritters in the Pennine areas of Yorkshire are on the ball and notice.
-
Bet the pennines are still stuck in deep deep snow??
Not here they aren't.
The thaw is coming in full force. Still snow on roof tops, but that will probably be gone by the days end. At ground level its now compressed and only about 10-15 cm's deep, would take a week to shift it though at these temps, barring heavy rain. So we should still have a inch or two of snow left when the cold resumes.
-
Fogs about 150-200 meters visibility here, so expecting it to be VERY foggy once night falls properly.
Really makes a great scene with the deep snow.
-
Snowing big flakes again here. This is starting to look like someone has it in for the Pennines, and is determined for us to have many feet of the stuff by year end. Thought we were going to have a snow free day, but now it seems to be just forming north of Manchester so as to save it all to dump on us.
-
Wasn't expecting to get much snow as the radar when I went to bed seemed to indicate it was dying out in the west, but we have had at least 5cm's of it - in fact must be more as we are now past the foot mark against one of the doors.
If we don't have a mild spell and that new Years storm happens then we will need rescuing at this rate:cold: :)
-
Unless that wind changes back, might not get anymore tonight.
Radar has nothing at all forming since the wind switched to a SW / WSW.
-
Looks like the winds changed direction. Its been a NW / NNW / NWW all day, yet now appears to be moving to a W, meaning the snow showers that do form should be heading towards the West Yorkshire areas instead of South Yorkshire as they have been.
-
North Yorkshire now has a weather warning, for Icy roads after snow showers, there hasn't been any snow yet in North Yorkshire so something must be happening for them to put out a warning.
http://www.metoffice...t_warnings.html
"Showers of sleet and snow will continue to affect northwestern England, as well as northern parts of both Cheshire and Derbyshire and western parts of Yorkshire. The ground temperature will be below freezing for much of the time, especially during the night and early on Wednesday morning, and this will lead to the formation of ice on untreated surfaces in many areas.
The public are advised to take extra care and refer to the 'Highways Agency' for further advice on traffic conditions on motorways and trunk roads."
Nah its probably just the Met remembering that Skipton is in North Yorkshire - where its been snowing on and off for most of the day
-
The pennines are sucking out all the energy out of the showers, to be expected really.
Has been snowing on and off all day for us. Currently very heavy snow at the moment.
I am amazed more of it hasn't made it down considering its angle is almost in line with the Aire Valley, so would of expected it to funnel down to Leeds / Bradford.
-
i am off up to near Skipton tomorrow - how much snow is there on the hills?
Round where we are (about 5 miles SSW of Skipton) its about 20cm deep at the moment. But we are high up, about 250m ASL, but there are higher around e.g. the Moors which are half a mile away are above 400m ASL and there it will be well over a foot deep I imagine.
I know Skipton itself has had some heavy snow, but as to its levels I don't know.
-
Currently Very heavy snow here. The winds changed direction and we are now in the main firing line.
Given the amount thats falling this should get a fair bit past the Pennines so should make north Leeds / Bradford I would expect.
-
Is Heavy Snowing here now.
Had over 8-10 cms of new snow last night, but seems like significantly more new snow on the fields. Its hard to judge but we are close to a foot depth of snow now on the fields yet we only had 6-8 cm's at most of ice / snow before this started.
-
The northern most band appears to have stopped moving south and is now moving east. Guess that could put a early stop for us having any more snow for a while.
-
Been snowing very heavily here now for 20 minutes.
Is it me or does the radar of this look like the bands are picking up speed? If so surely that will mean that it will penatrate further south than it has been.
-
Looking at the radar another hour then the main band should hit us, and probably stay with us all night. Glad today has not been a false promise like yesterday was.
-
Heavy snow again here. Been going for 10 minutes. This combined with the semi-blizzard we had eariler for 30 minutes means we have had a good 2-3 cm extra snow so far.
-
Been snowing on and off here for the past hour, some of it very heavy and added almost a centermeter of fresh snow.
Looking at the radar looks like the first big clump of the day should be here in about an hour. Hopefully its not a disappointment like last nights snow was.
-
Been snowing here now for 5 minutes. Its a bit dissapointing as its not really that heavy so not expecting more than a couple of extra cm's on the ground from this. Really does look like its east of us thats having the main brunt of this.
-
The snow isn't from the main band, these are flurries ahead of the band. It looks like the PPN won't be here till 6:30.
Damn it, your right. Getting to eager for the snow.
-
No light snow here yet <_< but expecting it any minute if its snowing at Leeds Bradford Airport as thats more southern than us, and the west side of this storm can't be that delayed.
-
Sorry guys we got Snow here and LOTS of it.
Currently about 8 cm deep, and its still snowing, often very heavy.
Fun though was last night. Driving from Bradford to home at 8:30 pm, lots and lots of snow (about 2-3 cm already on the ground) and the wise council in charge of Keighley hadn't gritted! So the Bingley bypass etc was a 'fun' trip at 20 mph driving on ice the wholle way.

Welcome to the madhouse that is Netweather Cowdog
Look forward to reports from just up the road - Draughton perhaps?
Thanks, and not Draughton as I said south of Skipton. Largest place we are closest to forms part of my user name, so is easy to work out around where.

Well so far today I'd say the Dales has had the heaviest most prolonged snow, a shame no-one's posting from that area as I'd be intrigued to know what it's like around Malham and up towards Hawes at the moment
I live a few miles south of Skipton in the Pennines (about 250m-300m ASL) and we have had on/off snow all Morning, none of its settled though here. A relative of mine took a trip near Malham this morning and they turned around, the snow had started to settle and conditions were getting bad - but then again they hate driving in the snow so it could just been only minor.

Been snowing here now none stop since before 9am. So far about 2 centemeters of new snow, which is surprising considering the snow is getting to us then dying off just as it gets into Lancashire.
Not posted since Christmas, but our 'Snow' that fell 2/3 weeks ago still exists in clumps on South facing slopes. Combined with the snow from last night which has also turned into ice as well and we have one hell of a dangerous area to get around in. Going to be a fun week if the tempreture keeps going to about -10 each night and turning the snow to blocks of ice each night.
