  1. Finally got proper snow here on Mon/Hereford border. Small flakes but heavy and settling already. I notice on the SW thread that Ian Fergusson thinks the snow might last longer (into this evening) over the Forest of Dean which is a similar altitude to us and just to our east. I wonder if school will close early today, could be a tricky journey later.
  2. Snizzle here since 9am, interspersed with flurries of proper snow, but it's already sticking on all surfaces including the road. Herefordshire/Monmouthshire border.
  3. We're up on the hill above Welsh Newton, we can look across to Garway Hill and the Graig, so not far away. I'm hoping the roads are passable tomorrow morning as I need to get out and don't have a 4x4.
  4. It's been snowing non-stop since 9 this morning, currently around 4". It's not as heavy now as around lunchtime. We're on Monmouthshire/Herefordshire border, 5 miles north of Monmouth where it's been snowing but not sticking - but we're around 900 ft which always makes a difference.
  5. Very light sleet/snow flurries in the wind here on Monmouthshire/Herefordshire border. I don't think it's going to come to anything today though. It will be interesting to see how this cold spell develops for us.
  6. Amazed to wake up to a covering of snow this morning! Where did that come from? Last night's forecast suggested temperatures of 8 degrees for today and snow only for N Wales and the northwest. I was going to put my thermals in the wash, and had to dig them out again. Monmouthshire/Herefordshire border c900ft ASL
  7. Glad to see the back of this cold spell. We've had continuous snow cover since before Christmas which has made life very difficult. Fortunately there have been brief windows when we could get out and stock up on food for ourselves and animals, but we've run out of logs and have been unable to get anyone to deliver. We've sawn up all the old furniture in the loft and bits of timber that were saved for future building projects in our efforts to keep the heating going. Getting to work has been impossible without a 4x4 due to ice, deep snow and drifts. When you're self employed no work means no money. It couldn't have happened at a worse time if you're in the building trade. Our hens need to see some grass, they're so depressed they've stopped laying. I wouldn't say no to a bit more snow this winter for the children, but please don't let it be for so long! Icicles have been amazing, haven't seen so many big icicles since I can't remember when; and there have been some fantastically clear sunny cold days where you can see for miles. The nights around New Year were pretty amazing too with snow cover and the full moon - very strange eerie light. We'll all miss it when winter returns to the usual mud-fest next week!
