Yes that will be the "wishbone effect" I'm sick of seeing comments on from the SE bias / main thread ... TBH the main thread has been a joke for days and days with school kid behaviour at times. Pathetic childish stuff sometimes. Ensembles look good for us in Scotland. I've been keenly into weather forecasting for over 40 years now and the up and coming spell is certainly interesting given these synoptics are fairly rare.

The 528dm air disappears quickly so guess that's why they're going for rain. Sunday's a long way out though so not buying the GFS at the moment. A small correction south will keep Scotland in the Arctic air.

Very much depends where the school staff travel from. Worst of the weather was to the East, for example my boss travels early from Aberdeen to Westhill. She was in the car for 2hrs this morning and I don't think she even got outwith the bounds of Aberdeen. Fubar news is littered with reports of roads closed, mainly blocked by stuck lorries or busses.
Incidentally I made a suggestion via various local politicians that Aberdeenshire Council consider a policy of actively favouring staff who live nearer schools, and/or setting up a 'swap database' for people who'd prefer working nearer where they live. Partially for resilience reasons in adverse weather, mainly for the impact on CO2 outputs from 'unnecessary' car travel. I could cycle to the nearest secondary school yet I commute nearly 50 miles every day, and there'll be teachers at the nearest school that do the same in the opposite direction.
A couple of the local councillors/MSPs did follow up on it and asked the council what their policy towards that would be. The response was that they wouldn't consider it because they felt that having a policy of preferring to employ staff based on their proximity to their workplace could potentially fall foul of employment legislation. They didn't even seem to acknowledge the possibility of teachers swapping schools voluntarily. After a few emails back and forth I gave up.
Really, were screwed on climate change if we don't get more radical in how we react to try to avoid it.
Great idea but the chances of getting the councils to do anything proactively are slim. Good on you for trying though. I did see the road chaos on the news this morning. Not like they didn't have warnings about a little snow. I grew up 14 miles from school west of Inverness in the countryside at altitude and I can only remember a few days off and it was proper snow that caused it (12+ inches snow) and the main schools rarely closed so kids that could make it in would go even if there were less teachers in. Changed days and I'm sure nanny state policies have put a stop to any creativity by teachers to try look out for kids education which I know they aspire to do.

15+c here in Aboyne today. Stepped out the home office at lunchtime and it felt like a good spring day outside. As much as I love the infrequent cold snowy days of winter, the damp rainy days we often get nowadays makes it more of a chore. Already had my fill of winter so hopefully a mild end to come.

Something that resonated with me from my trip away was a convo I overhead from two guy (in their late 40s if i’m being kind) and they were saying how ‘there’s lots of fresh snow at the carpark. I took the new van up with the kids when it was empty. Traction control - OFF. RWD - ON and then sent the thing flying about’. He then said ‘I turned to the kids and went don’t tell your mum!’. Just brilliant, you don’t need to ever fully grow up!
Was doing something similar in an empty carpark near our house in the Dec cold spell. Off course our 8yr old blabber mouth did tell his ma after I said something similar.... Agree - never grow up. Winter tyres and a Golf R is the best weapon for controlled fun in the snow !!!

So Dorik speaking kilters, where's good fir snaw in the NE?
Looks like in the spring, family SS will be hoose hunting an hour or so E of Aberdeen along the edge of and intae the highlands!
Whoop whoop!
If you mean 1 hr West of Aberdeen you will find plenty of spots. I'm in Aboyne approx 30 miles west and we get our share. Further west Ballater then Braemar will give you more if you can live that distance. Donside Alford area or hills close to Huntly also worth a shout. No shortage of snow in NE if you manage to get a bit of altitude. I had frozen pipes (modern house) last week after multiple sub zero days. Feb 2021 was -21c and frozen pipes again but worse then (no damage as on it quick). 40+cm lying snow Feb 2021.

A few reasonable snow showers still passing over but things seem to be clearing up. Just watched some Eurofighters circling noisily overhead.
What're the thoughts on the next few days? The met office seemingly going for sleet showers with XCweather going much colder with some reasonable snow accumulations.
Looking at the 500-1000hPa charts and the slack north easterly over the next few days I'd say a few surprises might show up with the North Sea convective machine! I see plenty snow potential. Just cleared 10cm snow from driveway as expecting more overnight.

Could somebody please make up their mind? gotta drive to Banchory tomorrow, from Fife. Need to know if I should risk the Cairn O Mount, or just go by Aberdeen...
I'd put a lot of cash on the Cairn O Mount being closed tomorrow early morning. Parts of the A90 above 500ft between Dundee and Aberdeen could also be troublesome tomorrow

Another 10cm or so overnight in Aboyne. Schools closed. Kids will enjoy sledging in nearby field later.
