Snow down to around 700m here. There was a light dusting on the very tops early one morning back in October, but didn't last long, so this is the first decent covering for the Lake District fells! Last year snow arrived on the 7th November, year before think it was around the 4th December.
I'd imagine the snow will wash away tonight but hopefully will build up nicely next week. Will have to dust off the winter hiking kit, always like to head up to greet the first snows of winter!

Gusty wind with hail showers, temp 7.1c. Much more seasonal weather!
-
Beautiful day here, perfect blue skies, frost on the ground and a big bank of fog across the lake. Doesn't get much better than this! Hopefully more tomorrow.
-
I've gone for a typical wet and windy month. I prefer my cold and snow to set in around mid Dec.
So more like Nov 09 than 10 but without the severe flooding thanks!
-
Forgot about this, thought maybe I'd missed it.
I do hope we can all get shots like this again this winter!

Yes there is a significant earthbound cme from another M class flare, it will arrive late tomorrow or early Wednesday, and there is further cme activity today I've still to look at, there may be more opportunities on Wednesday and Thursday night from any of today's cme activity.
Spot on, ill keep my eyes peeled!

Clouded over here now, not going to see much tonight.
Any chance of viewing aurora over this coming week? Perfect weather conditions with high pressure in charge.
-
Sounds great! what time do you think it will peak? Will have to go for a wander up the road, theres a big bank of trees blocking my view north.

Atlantic fronts crashing into cold continental air tends to be the best synoptic for the Lake District in terms of snowfall. When fronts become slow moving in such set ups they can deliver huge amounts - a classic example of this 5/6 Feb 1996.
Unstable northwesterly/westerly airstreams in very cold polar air are also a good synoptic for heavy snow, especially in central parts of the Lake District, the fells tending to pep up any shower/trough activity. A recent example of this was Dec 20th 2009, here we saw a foot of snow.
Other good set ups but more difficult to achieve are - polar lows and low pressure tracking on a southerly path across the midlands - thus anywhere to the north of the frontal zone will catch snow- in these set ups the colder continental air from the northeast usually wins the battle.
Easterlies rarely deliver the goods due to the Pennines. Northeasterlies can penetrate showers and troughs through in the Lake District and these can deliver quite moderate amounts but rarely anything heavy. Northerlies tend to bring shortlived heavy snow showers but also superb clear arctic bone chilling air.
Thanks for that, fingers crossed for a big blizzard this winter!

Similiar to here. We have had light rain throughout the morning but in the past hour it has turned heavier. Lots of low cloud down to about 100m. Not great weather for early September. Expecting only a very slow improvement through the evening.
Good to see a fellow Cumbrian on the forum, there aren't many of us... Look forward to reading your posts throughout the coming months especially in the winter in northerly/north easterly/easterly set ups - tracking how far south and east the snow showers/fronts have penetrated and more generally how far the snowline is. Incidentally where exactly are you located, Dockray area?
I'm in Watermillock, towards Pooley Bridge end. It will be interesting to see how this winter pans out, last year was poor for snow although the depth of cold was exceptional. I always make sure I read your posts in the model tread, very informative. Do you know what the best set up is for heavy snow our area? I assume it would be battleground fronts from the west/north west. Those huge snow showers that buried the east last year hardly gave us anything once over the Pennines, very disappointing.

Woke up to the sound of rain lashing against the window and the wind howling. Autumns on its way! Eased off now, temp 14.5c.
-
Gone very dark with a strong gusty wind, heavy rain just started but looks like the main action is too far west again
-
Watching dark clouds approach from the south. Cells seem to always be too far east or too far west, hopefully this one will give me some thunder overhead.
Cant complain though, i've seen more lightning this past 3 days than the past 3 years!

Popped into Penrith this morning, snow on Cross Fell now almost non existent. Helvellyn looking plastered with the stuff, old snow and alot of fresh from recent days. Should get another decent top up tonight.
Looks like Helvellyn will win this year for these parts.
-
Was up Helvellyn a week ago, still some big patches on the east faces. Surprised at Cross Fell's west face, about as much snow as there was last june!
Just shows how little snow came from the east during that nov/dec spell. Most of the snow in the Lake District fells came from westerlies in january.

Well this year Cumbria seen it's worst snow for a decade or more, Coldest temps in 25 years, and now a bloody earth tremmor 3.6 magnitude. So I am wondering can the weather have anything to do with this, or are they not connected. Even though it's a year to remember so far 2010!
I felt that, around 11pm. Felt like a train going under the house. Anyone know where the epicentre was?
Very poor for snow over this side of the county, had 5 in in the nov spell but just 1 in from the current one. Very light snow falling at the mo but i want at least a foot in time for xmas!

Tuesdays map is open. Put a square on the Brecon Beacons for tues morning.
Pure guesswork now at this range, I preferred it when it was just us weather nuts playing!
-
Woohoo! Both my squares won yesterday, really didnt think they would after the poor forecast.
My first win, enjoying this now, easy money!
Got one on Western Ireland now, some showers passing through so fingers crossed!

That website is awful! I certainly won't be going there for my forecast.
