The snow is melting that quickly here that it will of all gone in a few hours time.
its 3.9 degs here warmest it been fro some time of you can call it warm. Hope thats not the mild air making in roads otherwise it could be game over with the other fronts and the cold pushed beyond south Yorkshire which would be a shame maybe a warm sector wrapped up in the front. Temps should be dropping now really warmest part of the day over but still going up

I was born in North Yorks, so I have good reason to!
In terms of hills down here they are principally the North and South Downs. You may be thinking of Box Hill nr Reigate/Dorking way in Surrey
Not quite the same as the Pennine routes (which I used to know so well) but still, as you say, its not a bad area at all overall.
Snow showers in easterly set-ups down here are very much determined by the exact wind direction in terms of who gets them where. Much the same as in most other parts of the country too of course.
The other week the wind was a straight NE'erly and that feeds snow on a streamer off the north sea through parts of eastern and central Kent and eastern most parts of Sussex - wheras if the wind goes more easterly then the Thames area, parts of Surrey, western and northern kent and Essex see more snow.
So much to explore in the UK i cant imagine ever moving South though im a northerner really but no doubt you would have siad that before you moved. Love Scotland Wales Never been to Ireland but looks divine and corwall and Devon is fab. We are so Lucky in the Uk but i never understand why people cant all be proud of each others land. I probably live in an unrelaistic bubble but just wish everyone appreciated each other and binned the issues.

Only got to the flask on the Whitby road this morning and turned back, funnily enough the snow was heavier when we got back down into Scarborough. We (and the rest of Scarborough) are having a real tough time on the roads due to the thaw from Friday nights snow freezing and then this lot on top.
We had 8cm's at the last check and it's still coming down. There was a spell at about 11.30 where the flakes were probably among the biggest Iv'e ever seen!
I'll post an official depth when it stops.
Temp +0.9C with Dew Point of -0.7C which is probably why the flakes were so huge.
Sounds amazing ! Is Flask near Slates or ami miles off. love it up that way Hole of Holcum its bleak but beautiful just like the moors around here. Any chance of video of these flakes they sound amazing.

Hi
No. I was right in the 'thick' of it! Heavy frequent snow showers for 24 hours or so and at least 10cms of snow which drifted around in the icy winds. The snow took nealy a week to completely melt too - all is good!
So I am certainly not complaining about missing out on the snow this coming week. I hope you all enjoy the coming week and have fun!
Ah thats good then and thanks for rooting for us up North we do appreciate it. When i saw it on BBc news i was pleased for you lot who wanted it shame it was pushed so far east though it described ones side of Kent being covered and the west side having nothing. Must admit it spurred me to do some research into the topography of the area and it looks stunning. The geology of the area and sharp contrast from coast to hills and valleys is amazing. Your highest hill is 260mtrs cant rmemeber name of it now its got a B in it????? Must admit it has been cold up here but recenlty had very little in the way of any precipitation snow so this week could be the one i hope! Suppose im panicing that its all over after this which is a bit silly really considering some of our haviest falls have been inm march in recent years, having siad this this is no ordinary or usual winter so maybe March will be spring like and fun and lots of flowers etc etc

Why is it worrying you????? have you got milK and bread. If you dont live in Penistone where everyone panic buys you will be fine

Measured a good 6-8cm of snow, currently -0.2c and overcast with zero thaw. Hopefully we will be getting a good top-up in the coming days.
Had around 5/6cm of snow quite impressive cover , got up at 8am and it was really coming down heavy but considering went to bed at 3 am i had to go back to bed. It was sunny when i got up and melting the snow rather quickly off the trees then its gone cloudy again and we have had a moderate shower for about ten minutes. Quite interesting how you are staying in the colder air, and yet only 20/30 north of here. It was nearly 2.0degs when i got up at 11am it has dropped agian ikn the shower but when the sun comes out it just thaws the snow. Cant beleive how much stronger it is than a month ago. It was sunny on several occasions in Jan and ut never shifted it. Must admit after watching countryTracks forecast it seems very possible that heavy snow may be a frequent visitor this week. Its the best set up i have seen for a long time but it may be that my elevation may just not quite help enough as some of the heavy snow wss slighlty further north. I am totally naware that this will change run to run though and as i have said 2 years ago this snow now would have been amazing but after last two years of heavy falls you begin to get a little greddy and have higher expectations. Oh well if this week turns out as forecast its going to be pretty amazing around these parts. My wife hates cold weather and says its because we live in a field. I keep trying to explain that this is although unusual in the last 20 years this type of weather we should be getting but its not working and it would seem that its all my fault the snow is here and that i do secret snow dancers to bring it just down our drive.
Did you miss the snow in kent a couple of weeks ago??? think it was further east wasnt it. Sorry my daugheter in Law and son are heading back to Cambridge and and secretly hoping for this snow but i think they will gradually realise there isnt any as the transisition from snow to rain occurs on there drive down south. And they had to be dug out and pushed up here. How annoying for them.

currently -1 off to bed exhausted cant look at any more weather tonight - never known weather watching be so tense as it has been this past winter.
Night all

temp steadily rising currently -1.6 degs and a thin haze mooving moving in. Just watched the weatherveiw which seemed quite promisign promising for this mornings snow event and the potential for Wednesdays event. Skimmed over a lot in a short space of time and he isnt really a snow ramper but there was quite a lot of snow in his meteorological report. Even Mondays event had snow over south Yorks and midlands albeit light. Could be a very interesting week for yorkshire if the patterns stays in its current track! Heres hoping
-
Ha-Haa! a fellow penistonian good day to you
currently -1.8º with DP of -5.18º
Hello how you doing
-
Temps certainly are dropping, -2.3 here with a dew of -4.8.
Your temps should start to rise shortly as cloud cover increases, it's gives us guys in the East to get the temps a little lower for the precipitation
G night 10123.
You'll be fine, nothing to worry about at all your in a very good position.
Make sure you get some nice pics for me tomorrow morning
good night
Yea no worries i will do currently -3 and still dropping
Night
Is that a bad thing as this will pull up warmer air into more southern regions of Yorkshire?
-
This is for Craigers and John Holmes.
Doncaster/South Yorkshire - moderate to heavy falls between 4:55am and 9am. Accumulations of 5-7cm (possibly more) before turning to a mixture of light rain/sleet/snow as the energy is transfered SE'wards, with the precipitation intensfying across NE lincs/E lincs, and also parts of NE england on it's most Northern edge.
West Yorkshire/North Yorkshire - Precipitation will be a little lighter with the penines hampering anything spectacular with regards radar returns. 2-4cm.
Energy and intensity always at it's most intense to the South of the band, where later on it will intensify also on it's N most edge.
East Yorkshire, what a coinsidence, although probably the hardest one to predict. With most of the energy South of the humber, i don't think we will see anything that heavy, patchy light to moderate (although this could change) giving roughly 1.5-4cm before turning to sleet/wet snow/rain mixture from 9:40 onwards. It all depends on what the precipitation does when it gets over the penines. There's a lot of hills protecting this side of the country so 9 times out of 10 unless it comes from the North/East/Or more from the SSW the precipitation tends to fizzle out.
Something to keep an eye on is Lincolnshire, with the heaviest precipitation expected to be over these areas, especially the East Midlands and NE into Eastern parts and NE parts of lincolnshire. Timing of the precipitation is crucial for these areas due to the warm sector. Although with heavier precipitation the 0c isotherm is likely to drop much lower, that's one factor in favor. Estimation 5-12cm for East Midlands and parts of Central S linolnshire, possibly more for E/NE lincs all depending on timing and of course conditions.
Enjoy it, best of luck. I could be way out with my estimations, or i could be spot on, regardless this is from nowcasting and what the current radar looks like and also models. The metoffice get it wrong time to time and we all learn mother nature has a funny way of proving us wrong, so if i'm wrong. Better look next time a lovely game of guessing game.
Good night guys
Thnaks sounds promising hopefully S.Yorks do ok but you didnt really mention this area. Hard one to call and after last two attempts has only produced 1/2cm even prolonged snow just far too light although has stayed around and not melted max temp today was 2.2 degs
-
thanks NCC-it does give everyone a much better picture when the reports start to come in if we all have our town/area in our avatar-height is even better.
I think i have done it i had a go!
Yeay it worked gunna try and upload a pic now
Wow got my pic on too although not the one i wanted as the train staion in snow was fab but to high quality wouldnt fit this is very pretty tho
-
Hi again NCC1701, when you have a spare minute, would you pop your location into your avatar please? It's just to make it easier for everyone to recognise where you are
Many thanks
Brian
Yes sorry not quite got the hang of this yet even tho ive been watching for 3 years i should know. No probs will do now if i can fathom it out
-
im up at 7:45 hehe, hope to see you all on here ill be out take photos tomorrow as well
temp is -3 with a dew of -4.8c
Jesus you are committed. Sod that i will take a peak at ten and if nowt back to bed!
-
I dont know if this will work but couldnt resist attatching this pic whne we had heavy snow in Jan there was 25 cm and still snowing ended up with 30cm in the end the next morning. Penistone 220m amsl
Gopt some gawjuz ones of trees and stone walls etc if anyone fancies having a look i will post them. Sorry if this is not relevant but wanted to share this
-
I'll take that, its often the case that the snow turns a bit sleety here. I'm sure been only 16 metres asl won't help. Hope you get a pasting over your end.
Fair dos no it wont but you just never know
-
Damn! as you're slightly further north than me looks like you will be getting snow and I will be getting heavy sleet
I am sure that Elevation is poss not keyed into this so will have an impact. I cant see this taking all data on board eg temp thickness wet bulb gradient etc etc etc so i think we can safely shift that green splodge another 50 mile further south. There is that better sorted! Anyway green is rain/snow so could be either so still looking good
-
Many thanks.
Shall open the curtains and decide if i will or won't be going!
I'm about 110-115 asl!
Not a problemmo ianyhting to help and improve the pattronage on the Penistone Line hope you have a fab day i will just have a snopw walk on the Pensitone trail and see how far i can get to Dunford Bridge with my son before giving up!
lol I dont think so your only about 3 miles south of me.
And due to your elevation you should do better. Man I wish I was like 300metres high, then these marginal set-ups become almost guaranteed!
Ye too right, I think all the ingredients are there for some big dumps, especially on high ground!
At penistone your laughing, you could be snowed in by the end of next week
Fekkin fantastic. Me thinkx a glass o red wine is on order
http://charts.netwea.../h850t850eu.png
look at how the 18z brings the low too far north, this time the dam scotts are laughing.. Its all a balancing act to get the best for your location. Being selfish id like that low over the midlands
-
There's something I like about that chart, but I can't quite put my finger on it
Could it be the shades of pink over your location?????
-
Ye, this set-up certainly suits inland areas, especially with elevation!
Penistone be ok then but without the alchohol what night last night. I think the lows are over progressive and again the set up is very alien to computer models created over last 20/30 years to monitor this. A few suprises ahead. Im quite suprised how queit it is on here actually maybe all at the pub
