  1. Its nearly minus 2 here Penistone 220m amsl already altho there does seem to be some very thin high cloud about..
  2. Certainly will be snow about. I think main rds should be ok, there are patches of snow still around from previous snow and the snow from Thursday eve. Forecast for this areas is between 6 and 15cm and you certainly will be in a location varying from 170mtrs up to and over 300 mtrs. If you are goin past the Strines it is certainly open and bleak at times. If you are prepared for a some challengin walk and experienced then i think you will be fine but if it is just for a sunny potter then i wouldnt bother as you will be dissapointed. failing that you could alter your course and walk on the hills above Stocksbridge around Penistone up to hartcliffe tower 360mtrs amsl and overlooking langsette res and stocky res with veiws across the midhope moors. And start at the train station and use the train from Sheff. Even when we had a foot of snow in Jan the trains never stopped. one every 2 hours starting at ten and last one back to sheff at 19.50 thats the sunday service.
  3. I cant beleve you recorded temp so high. It only peaked at 2.2 degs today her in Penistone South Yorkshire. Are yuo sure you thermometer was not in the sun????
  4. I didnt see Johns post but i have a good feeling about this set up i think i mentioned it a few days ago. It just seems right . I know it has nothing to do with gut feeling and is all down to the hands of the Gods so to speak but this could really hit Central Northern England quite hard on several occasions. I know this is all subject to substantial change and the slightest change could have a substantial affect on the outcome but heres hoping. Off out to Grandaughters Bday so will catch up on the charts later on. Fingers crossed they dont change! heres hoping but without the alchohol i have a bit of a hangover
  5. How likely is this though??? its certainly within the reliable time frame but that has become shorter and shorter recently.
  6. Nowt wrong wi one o them quite pelasurable well done you! For how much it snowed it didnt settle too well but everything covered about 2/3cm but the sun is much stronger and melting it rapidly. Temp 1.8 deg and rising. very pretty early on but i went back to bed so although its still covered in the shade the areas getting the sun have really diminshed snow now but it is late Feb and the sun is getting stronger. Must admit im getting excited about the potential mon/wed event that could see us getting several, inches if the set up stays similar with the lows tracking SW-NE and us being on the Northern edge and then dragging in N/Nelys as the low moves out again to the North Sea. we just need some greater intensity int the fronts.
  7. I wasnt lucky or unlucky as it were enough to experience this but do remember as a very young child the snow of late 70's and early 80's last one being 86/87 from this they all became significanlty milder and less snowy up until 2008. 2000/1 was very cold but often dry.
  8. dont blame you mate im settleing down to watch a flick then off to bed no work tomz fortunately so up for a couple more hours
  9. The long retired bit sounds great i sort of envy this seen as i have 30 more years of work but i shiouldnt complain at least my job seems reasonably secure! soz about that mate its probably your height. It doesnt start snowing around here until you are over 150mtrs and then settleing only above 180mtrs certainly elevation has supported this event in Yorkshire. Heres hoping for a better blast at the end of the weekend. Still think there is a bit more to be squeezed out of this as it rotates in south and west yorkshire. Looks like a flow from NW with some beefy showers in it.
  10. Do you think that might be more significant must admit i had expected more this time although some earlier were not expecting the front to come this far north i must admit i was fairly confident but it has fizzled more than i hoped. I find it bizzarre though how slighlty warmer air has not mixed in if this continues and we get more intense fronts the end of Feb and early March could well be one to remember. Just pisked picked my son up from the train station and struggled to get off the road and back on again. God if that comes off then i will be amazed and strandard.
  11. What a lovely description you had a lucky experience then i love to walk in this type of weather although not down the M69
  12. like u say gunna need some intensification to reach even those totals unless it means high ground exclusively and that being over 305mtrs 1000ft although we have got a covering it is struggeling to be more than 1cm at a push more like a dusting. and its slushy in places. Seems such a shame as it is a perfect setup in this area for snow significant but the weather patterns just are not supporting it . Never mind always March. Maybe those showers will affect South Yorkshire too??? is that on a NW regime following the fron out to the North Sea????
  13. Penistone South Yorks bordering West Yorks 220mtrs amsl we got a covering still snowing light/moderate temp 1.3 degs dropped .2 in last half hour
  14. well 2/4cm is ok like i have said earlier if this had have been a few years ago this would have been exciting but because of recent events this is poor but still its snow its better than nothing and still March to come when in recent times we have had some of our most heavy and frequent falls of snow. Admitedly not lasting long in the stronger sun but fun all the same.
  15. Well im not as high as the Snake Pass but its covered at Penistone only a fine covering but moist most things have a white dusting. Just left Barnsley where it is raining quite heavily with snow mixed in got to Silkstone common at 180mtrs and it was snowing got to Penistone at 220 mtrs and it covered be it fine temp 1.5 degs and holding steady. Very similar to last night cold still misty and snowing constnakty but light.
  16. Temp levelled off here 2.2 degs yes i certainly think we will get some from that front and if it does intensify we might get the predicted 5-10cm like i said not complaining it has been a very different winter this year frustrating at times with FI Easterlies etc but never coming to fruition but thats FI for you. Must admit march has brought us a lot of snow. Since moving from Rotherham out here it has certainly made a difference used to live about 450ft amsl which is just about as high as it gets around those parts apart form Hoober stand so moving out here nearly 300 feet higher and much higher elevations surrounding us has made all the difference at tiems especially during more marginal events. Last night i drove from Chapletwon 80mtrs absl and by the time i got back the differnce in snow cover and temp was amazing. anyway im being boring about heights but nice to chat with people who are interested in the weather. Spent a lonely 3 years watching rather than commenting but thought it was time.
  17. probably cluthching at straws here but if the front or intensity of it shifted just 50miles west it would cover a much greater area of Yorkshire S & W. Looking at the flow after that a possibly favourable NWstrly could push some showers in to S.Yorks and West Pennines. I must admit i have never observed such difficult synoptics in all my time of watching the weather through the NET. Certainly been an eye opener this year.
  18. So the Sheffield snow shield is back in place again. Yes having slight flurries but thawing quite rapidly at mo currently 2.2 deg and rising so not looking hopeful. Must admit though the Met Office are still going with a warning for our area although admitadley on the northern edge of it. I noticed the beefier showers pulling up to our west and the and the rest splitting over the southern pennines. Never mind like i said if this had have been 2 or 3 years ago it would have been an amazing spell we have just been a little spoilt with recent synoptics and events although we havent done very well over the last 2/3 weeks it has been very unexciting as all the good stuff stayed in FI. Must admit the front last night up until a few hours before hand was never forecast to make it to our region and it did so fingers crossed with this more intense one. Cant beleive difference in temps from us to you, although in saying that i do know that when i get from here to Dunford Bridge the temp has often dropped over 1 deg which can be the difference between rain and snow even though it is only another 70mtrs higher than her, and more rural. Although my equipment isnt great i have set it all up in the shade away from buildings and a metre above the ground so i think it is fairly accurate to witihn .5 deg????? fingers crossed looking at the front on Raintoday it is making quite rapid and a more westerly track so could be in for a few hours of moderate snow.
  19. Must admit not seen many very low Temperatures even here in Penistone 220mtrs ABSL - Lowest we have had is about -5.9c i understand other areas quite close by have had lower than -10 in the last cold spell in January but again this was due to favourable set up and dense cold air sinking. Snow was nice yesterday but really didnt make the impact suggested. A dusting at best pretty but not sledging weather. I am more hopeful for tonights event, was a little worried about warm sectors slipping in but im pretty sure that at this altitude we will be ok and get a few inches. I have to remember that if this was 2008 then this would have been the worst event for years so i have to not be spoilt from the last heavy fall of 12inches and just be happy with what we get.
