  1. Personally I preferred the winter of 2008/2009. Although Nov/Dec 2010 was good I'm not particularly interested in how cold the temperatures are, rather how much snow there was. During the second half of December we only saw about 1cm, accompanying that was regular sub -10.c which while interesting I'd prefer snow over record cold.

The winter of 08/09 was particularly good here as the cold spells were spread out with December brining 15cm of snow lying for over 10 days, and February saw 20-30cm lying for 14 days,

December 2010 far exceeded the snow of 2009 and 2009 - 2010 in this area. February 2009 was rather unimpressive here to be honest, I don't recall how much snow actually fell but it can't be more than 20 cm. January 2010 was pretty unimpressive in terms of snow depth too, but it lasted for two weeks with sub zero temperatures.

The only complaint I have of December 2010 was the final half of the month. We had no snow here in east Leeds, it was very, very cold with a permanent rime frost and all the lakes/fountains frozen, but there was only a few snow flurries.

  2. January was pretty average, plenty of frost and snow for this part of the world.

You are misquoting Brian. He has no views at the moment, it's way too early.

Winter 2008/2009 was pretty good, but the following winter and 2010/2011 beat it many, many, many miles. I seem to have a place for 2008/2009 because it was the snowiest and coldest winter in a while, however our first really decent snowfall was in Feb 2009 and even so, we had to wait til around the 7th/8th for our first really decent snowfall. There were a number of snowfalls that did bring some accumilations of a cm at most or a dusting. In my opinion, the winters of 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 are better than 2008/2009 because there were plenty of decent snowfalls (particulary December 1999 which was a notably snowy winter in parts of Scotland).

Winter of 2008 - 2009 good for snow but crap for cold in all honesty. January 2009 was colder.

  3. Sunday is forecast to be sunny with a high of 17c and a low of 9c. The BBC always over-estimate the temperatures, and on many occasions I record temperatures at night 4c lower than the forecast, due to my more rural and sheltered location. Frost is unlikely at a low level area like mine but I'm sure it's gonna be chilly the next few nights!

  4. Something that interests me is the variation between north and south during cold weather spells.

One comparison I've made is the March 2006 cold spell. Comparing London Heathrow Airport, Leeds Bradford Airport and Edinburgh Airport.

The Ice Symbol represents the day when snow fell, the temperature max and min is the 'Actual' temperature, the 'Average' temperature is the average temp normally seen on that day based on records dating from around 1995.

What is interesting is despite Edinburgh been further north LBA saw colder temperatures and more snow. While the spell for London seemed fairly cool but nothing of interest.

Ah, I remember March 2006, not as good as March 2001 though!
