  1. Woke up :) to about an inch and a half of snow on the ground this morning. Only thing is that the sun is shining so i'd say there will be alot of melt through the day. There was a very heavy shower at about 4 this morning. Have never seen snow flakes as big before! Anyway i'm off to the Glenshane with the dog.

  2. I don't post much but do look at the models. I don't contribute to the Output Model discussion as I am in agreement with the sensible posters and don't have anything further to say. I can't understand why someone would post a lengthy post that mirrors the 4 previous posts? And I don't know why someone who hasn't a clue would post on the Model Thread. Anyway as I live in Ireland I can post here.

Anyway - this weekend doesn't look good for snow below 300 to 400m. But you never know, inland on a brisk wind it might deliver to the norther half.

I woudld say with such sustained blocking on the models - all be it constantly pushed out 240 hrs for an esaterly, it would mean that we will get at least one more major easterly. I suspect snow will be a threat right into end of MArch this year.

What I am interested in is how this affects the Summer. You can read all you want about the top guys predicting this winter, but until the end most predicted a mild one. I would love to hear thoughts on how this unusal Winter is expected to effect the Summer. There should be some pointers from the past. Not saying set in stone that a blocked winter will provide a certain Summer, but the causes of the clod winter may have an impact on the following Summer. I could not take another very wet Irish Summer on top of all our other worries :)

Alot can still happen in this winter! I will agree with the point that you are saying that there is a chance that we could see cold through March but i think that this winter could well last into April! No matter how good a forecaster you are or how much experiance you have no one can foresee the coming summer. In my opinion anything can happen! People saying that because we are having a coldish winter and we are gonna have an exceptional summer is total balls! This is all in my own opinion! Putting my neck on the line i would say that the best of this winter is still to come! We may well have had lying snow for 3 weeks but by no means was this the best snow we have ever seen. It was more cold than snowy here in Derry. Not really basing it on any facts but something feels different about this winter and i think we could be in for quite a few surprises. Anyway rant over!! We have 1cm of lying snow from earlier snow showers which will probably melt tomorrow but its nice to see. I have a friend living in Carndonagh in Donegal and they have 2-3cms of snow from todays showers.

  3. Would be nice to see some snow this weekend! What is everyone thoughts for this weekend? I know it's gonna be short lived but it would be nice all the same. Can't remember the last time we had a sever northerly/north westerly. To be honest i'm sick of everyone to the east of us getting the snowy conditions. In saying that the cold spell from the 19th December which lasted 3 weeks was one of the most potent that I have ever witnessed! Hopefully we get a really good spell of snowy weather before winter gives way to spring.

  4. Have to say that this is the best cold spell that i have ever witnessed. Have about 2/3 cms of powder snow on the ground and we now have 21 days with lying snow. Really is spectacular!! Looking forward to seeing what monday brings as the snow moves north. Think its just a case of now casting with regards to the distribution and amount of snow we see. No real sign of milder conditions at the moment. This picture really sums up this cold spell for me as i have never in my life time seen such a sight. The River Foyle in Derry is nearly frozen solid and when i was going to work yesterday there were seals out on top of the ice, its the first time the Foyl River has froze in 50 years. What a sight! Heres a short video of Derry today where snow fell lightly for 3 hours and gave a further covering! Enjoy.

  5. It started snowing about 3 hours ago in Derry. Mostly light but became moderate for a time. Has left 2cms of fresh snow. Nice to see the early warnings out for Monday and Wednesday. Fishing on Benone beach tomorrow for a competition, looking forward to it but it's gonna be Baltic! Will havesone nice pics tomorrow night! I absolutly love this cold spell. It's relentless and we still have 2 months of winter left!!!!

  6. Wonderful pics folks. As JD Salinger said, "where do the ducks go in winter?"

A severe ice day today here. Freezing fog tonight. Minus 7 and falling. I feel like I'm in another world. Once in a lifetime experience for those under 30 perhaps? Considering the modern climate, that's very possible, especially if the ice decline in the Arctic continues apace.

Radar showed a nice shower heading right for us, then died out just off the coast - groan!

Theres actaully a ban on duck shooting at the minute because of the ice. Its a bit of a shame that theres no snow on the horizon for us up north. I'm sick to death of seeing England getting dumping after dumping!! Hopefully we get the same conditions later on in the winter!

  7. Woke up this morning to nice white conditions. About 2cms on the ground and its just started snowing agin. I see on the BBC forecast that Woodford in Manchester has had thier coldest ever night with temps getting down to -18 which is exceptional! He also mentioned that theres no sign of an end to the cold spell until the middle of January. God knows what February will throw at us. Hopefull relentless north westerlies or northerlies :D:D

  8. Really pathetic here in Derry! Woke up to a dusting of snow & graupal and to add to it the road service has come in and griited our whole estate which is never done. What was an icey wonderland for the past 2 weeks has now turned into slushy crap! What happened the heavy snow we were supposed to get this morning! Not a happy person! Taking a run up to the Glenshane this morning with the dog so i'll have some photos later.

  9. Just haome from work and its really pelting it down outside with snow. Its a pity because all day there has been heavy sleet showers and only in the past hour has it started to turn to snow! Condition are really treachorous outside now as all the rain and sleet from earlier has frozen solid. Hope to have a nice covering by morning! Nice to see that some are seeing snow.

PS Pomeroysnow i haven't been near the Foyle lately but its surely been cold enough for some of it to freeze.

  10. Current BBC forecast is looking good for all day tomorrow with showers pushing in from the NW. We seem to do beeter from this direction but i'll not be getting too exited yet until it happens as last thursday and friday we were forecast sleet and snow but all we got was rain. Waiting on the BBC newsline forecast now at 22.45. Hopefully its good news as the main BBC weather always puts the emphasis on England and Scotland!

  11. Just had a moderate rain shower here in Derry that last for about 30 mins. Can't really understand why it didn't fall as snow. Would be nice to wake up to another dusting in the morning. Last night we had a heavy snow shower at about 11, left everything white. Its now been nearly 14 days with snow on the ground and temperatures hovering around 0. This cold spell is really something special and things are looking really good for the rest of the winter. Happy New Year to everyone on here.
