Are you not thinking of 1981/2 rather than 82/3? I remember the December 95 spell well, living in Glasgow at the time. The all-time low record temperature was set at Glasgow Airport (-19.7c). Clyde was frozen over in the centre of town. Unfortunately so were many people's pipes, including my own. Having no central heating was not much fun!

Unsurprisingly the GFS 12z isn't quite as epic as the 6z but still a cold and wintry run.

Yes your correct it as 81/82 I was an apprentice at the time I arrived into work at 5.45am to be confronted by a time officer who took weather measurements every 4 hours and he just couldn't believe what his outside thermometer was telling him.

I was working with two 60 plus year olds that morning and we had to walk down through a depression carved out of rock where we remain convinced it was even colder, some of the frost damage had to be seen to be believed.

Got up to 8C in sheltered spots on the Black Isle today, with patchy cloud and not much more than a gentle breeze most of the time.  Could fit the 'nondescript sort of day' description easily....

@scottish skier and anyone else using Nokian Weatherproofs - how do you find them?  I put mine back on about a month ago, I was on Pirelli Pilot sports over the summer - almost wishing I han't changed as I find myself spinning out of bends and roundabouts.  Must learn to control my right foot better....!

    Buzzing in here tonight!!  tumble.jpg

I've got a full set of Nokian Weatherproofs 215/55/ 16s love them very precise and grippy couldn't fault them.

Car came brand new with Michelin Primacy 3s hated them car was twitchy as hell. Replaced them with a set of Dunlop Wintersport D4s which suited the car fine, Nokians are every bit as good possibly even better.

I would happily buy the Nokians again.

  3. Signing on for Winter 2015/16, looking good for weekend, been lurking all year.

Dunlop Wintersports D4 been on since last year, excellent tyres, car prefers them to Michelin Primacy 3s sits better on road 5% more fuel consumption though. One and only time on snow last year they were brilliant.

  4. Got to do the smug snow tyres thing today 3 young guys took 20 mins to get up a wee brae in front of house I was brushing snow off car. While they compacted and polished the surface then they disappeared I gets into car out of drive up now really slidy brae and catch them up, stuck on a slight incline I come to halt then proceed to drive round them in thick snow. To hear one of them shout how's that old punter able to do that and you can't !
