  1. . No good rant and you are right. There is a bigger picture and the dozy lot dredging encourages faster flows so a chance of more flooding and more dangerous. You will like this article then and whilst it is very long take your time to read and digest the points.. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/13/flooding-public-spending-britain-europe-policies-homes

If you dredge the rivers , it gets water away in the drier summer months allowing the land to dry out , which in turn gives a greater area to soak up excess water in winter , problem in recent years is  RSPB and other nature based organisations campaigning to keep water table higher in summer .so when it rains in winter it just sits on the surface or worse   Just what they think happens to the badgers ,foxes and other small mammals in winter covered by an inland sea is beyond me . . .

  2. I still feel very sceptical about thunderstorm chances for west country, just have a feeling we are going to miss this.

M4 northwards springs to mind.. Posted Image  very warm and humid today though!

dont often get decent th-storms from the west or south on the western- mid mendips due to steep slopes around penhill and beyond   ,they all slip along the bottom around shepton  to frome or bruton  the best ones come from the north or north west brewed in wales , same for snow fall .

  3. of course you wont be softening the blow for those suffering, but at least you wont be reveling in the weather that does! if your house was in iminant danger of getting flooded by unseasonal rain, would you like to read pages of people hoping that it will rain? its ok wanting to experience extremes as long as it doesnt adversely affect you... personally i dont need extremes, theres plenty of pleasure to be got from 'ordinary' seasonal weather.

i cant remember anybody hoping for a record breaking hot spell, just some nice warm sunshine! a drought would be as damaging to me as this cold is, so im not one for a 76 drought. 1995 though wasnt a disaster for agriculture or wildlife, in fact the august hot spell was perfect harvesting weather, perfect butterfly/insect weather, didnt kill off birds, mamals, etc, summer 1995 was nothing compared to what this spell is because it is breeding season, its the end of winter when everything hibernating is at its lowest, most vunerable, period.

i wouldnt write off cloud yet, with c10 days of an easterly we will be prone to miserable grey dull cloud, ok its not here yet, but id be surprised if we dont get some days like that especially when the wind turns south of east. funny, march 96 was clear, sunny, days and sharp frosts by night, a diurnal range of 14c! i didnt get all that cloud over that period. smile.png

couldn't agree more , as someone who spends all day outside , I have stopped reading the spring discussion mod threads simply because , many that seem to be posting on there only tend to be looking at , is b+++y snow , days and days away on whatever model floats their boat (boring ) , the weather is interesting and enjoy informed discussion on all aspects of it, whether hot or cold it doesn't have to be a record to be of interest ,
  4. Sorry but I don't get this fascination of yours for cold so late into Spring do you not give any thought to wildlife, farmers, the economy just think how many animals are getting killed by this cold farmers have had it tough enough over the past year this is the last thing they need

A post from chionomaniac in the stratosphere thread suggests the could could turn a lot warmer, drier and more settled as April progresses

The chances of snow in the south later this week are low now at the moment it looks like high pressure will stay over the UK to keep it away in the Atlantic

couldn't agree more , thousands of lambs have been lost in the last few days , crops arnt planted those that are are dying after the wet of winter , and times getting on , the massive increase in the cost of food come late summer , before we even think about heating fuel , might take the edge off any exciting weather event ,

  5. The METO BETA forecast for here says sleet from 9 tonight, turning to heavy snow round about midnight, carrying on until lunchtime Friday. Forecast temps rise to the dizzying heights of 2c Saturday afternoon before dropping back sub-zero again but rising to 4c on Sunday afternoon. That's for Holcombe so it should be pretty much the same for you.

I can see a play day coming up for Friday....

As those your sheep on the Mulberry site? They're very pretty.

yep thanks , and have lambs out now , so while i dont mind a bit of snow i dont want extended cold weather either

  6. I'm not actually sure they did. I came up today from north Devon to London and there was only snow once I hit east Hants and then it was very thin. A slight covering in south London but it's above freezing even now and melting. It looks like only the eastern side really had something that held on. Quite a bit of wailing and gnashing of teeth for instance in the North West regional thread!

It was sooo mild this morning in north Devon. I was working outside in a shirt: positively balmy 9C!

i know many on here like the cold and snow , but a warm melt day after a heavy fall is lovely ,

  7. Its snowing quite heavily here at moment still and my brother in shepton mallet says its still snow there. If we have any left after the rain sunday you should get your sledge up here although sadly im working again.

argos in shepton selling sledges like their going out of fashion , lol, nearly told them not to bother yet , slushy A roads all up over the top , and fog setting in (warmer air ?)

  8. When are we going to get a decent spell of wet weather here in the SE, looked on the charts looks like some drizzle mid week at that is it, must be one of the driest March, April on record. can anybody tell us why there are so many blocking highs, what has happened to the Gulf stream? Food prices will certainly go up if we continue with this dry theme. perhaps 1977 ( standpipes outside)

All us farmers had a very dry one last year and only just made enough feed to see us through this last winter , the early spring saved us , BUT continued dry weather will have an alarming effect on food prices if we get another one ,

Just about passed the traditional fill dyke period , and we need some dry in ,june, july so we are fast running out of time .

oh for just a normal year , no records of any sort , when was the last one ?

  9. I know most of you want snow..

But Im fed up with this cold...costing a fortune in heating bills..

Longest cold I can remember :wallbash:

dont get me wrong if we have snow I will enjoy it but cant see any on the horizon just yet.

yea im fed up with it as well , cant get out of it , the house is always chilled , even with the heating on , though a long way to go for the longest cold , rememebr last winter .the cold wind just went on and on .............

mild rain on the horizon soon .
