This shows pictures of before and after the quake using google earth as a reference. Sadly it shows the shear magnitude of this tsunami and the destruction wrought by it.

The force of the earthquake was more than likely directed westerly also low tide coincided with the expected tsunami.

It did check to the beeb. There's also conflicting records like from Hawaii where it was reported that the tide was no higher than normal then said lower areas received flooding. Check live updates on the beeb

So, 11 inches of snow are possible in the winter (for Southern Hemisphere) and not unusual in summer.

Could you explain why it is quite unusual to get snow in Florence? Florence is in northern Italy.
I missed this one unfortunately...but I had my 0 cm here in Athens...!

The weather in Athens (capital of Greece) this period is very cold. Last weekend it snowed in the centre of Athens, something that is really unusual here. Τhis week sleet is likely to fall.
