  1. This winter has been overshadowed by following years but this was the first decent winter (for cold & snow) for years.

We had snow in the first week of December that set the ball rolling, it actually closed my school for the first time in years if I remember correctly. The end of December into January was really cold, dry and frosty. Can’t remember the rest of January but then of course we had really heavy snowfall at the beginning of February. We had showers of snow on Sunday 1st and overnight into the 2nd. It stayed on the ground for a good 10 days or so. I know In London this event  was really noteworthy.

By historic standards it wasn’t really memorable but after so many mild years it started a change to colder weather which lasted until spring 2013. Interested to hear your memories from this year. Makes me feel old that it was 13 years ago already!

  2. I was living in Staffordshire at the time. I remember Christmas Day and Boxing Day being frosty but dry. The snow came on the morning of the 28th and was really deep. It lasted until around New Year’s Day and then we had a really foggy spell. It felt very cold at the time.

  3. Ones that stick out off the top of my head.

    1. February 12th 2014 - I was ground staff at Leeds Bradford airport back then and the conditions up there can be rough In June. That winter was really bad for wind but this storm sticks out. The day was absolute carnage for flights and I remember the check in hall roof was flapping badly. The most memorable part was seeing a road sign wrapped around some traffic lights on the drive home though!

    2. January 18th 2007, I was at school for this one and remember things getting really nasty walking home. I remember the roar of the wind whilst on my PlayStation in the evening.

    3. December 2006, not sure of the exact date but think it was the first week. My dads fence blew away.

Early January 2005 was really stormy as well as March 2008. I remember a really windy Christmas Eve as a kid which must be 1997. I’m sure I’ll recall some others when they are mentioned.

  4. So it’s 5 years since this and it’s (up to now) the coldest November we’ve had seen 2010 with a CET of 5.6C. I remember waking up to lying snow on the 9th (which is one of the earliest dates I can remember snow lying) and a snowy Friday mid month. Other than that I can’t really recall it being that cold, be interesting to hear if other locations had more prolonged cold that month.

  5. In terms of cold and snow probably something like this.

    1. 2010 - I wonder if I’ll ever see a month like that again, it was like living in Lapland.

    2. 2009 - Overshadowed by the year after but a proper white Christmas and a very cold last week.

    3. 2008 - snowy first week and freezing end.

2017 was good throughout with periodic snow and I remember the snowy last week of December 2000. Last year was good for cold around Christmas but it was such a depressing time I can’t say it’s a favourite month.

2015 should be the worst but it was so memorable (for the wrong reasons) I find it fascinating.

Worsts would be 2016, 2018, 2019 and many others like 2006, just dull, dark wet and rubbish. The wind was nuts in 2013 but again like 2015 was “interesting” from a weather perspective.

Most of the others I can remember will just go down as average. 2014 I remember for the snowy Boxing Day in a otherwise forgettable month.
