Morning Kumquat,
Thank you for tagging me on to this sighting.
I was at sandbanks all day and most of the evening too. When I arrived back i was shattered and went to bed early. 9.45 ish
been awake since 3am as I was stuffy and Very hot. Tried sleeping since and resisted temptation to look at my phone ( until now). Was about to venture to the storm thread when I noticed your notification.
Sounds very interesting for sure.
i know there is a display team for drones not far from bath , however, from your description , wind and distance doesn’t sound like they were drones .
Trying to be rational ( as I always do when I see things ) I do know of a father and son who fly planes with multicoloured undercarriage and emitt fireworks / pyrotechnics from their wingtips who present displays around the whole region. They do displays for weddings, Longleat events, and more…
they often practise and visit different towns to give free displays while they’re practising. I often see them over heavens gate direction and also towards Stourhead at times.
Even though I’m very much in to the ufo subject i do argue against some sightings that are put forward as UFOs, Such as the Somerset Standard who kept banging on about a member of the public who filmed what they believed were UFOs toward Cley Hill / Longleat . I proved to the folk on the forum that these were indeed the display planes of the father and son team but posters were still adamant they were UFOs. I zoomed right in with my 82x optical camera ton prove it as I think it’s really important to look at every potential .
From what you said there id also rule out lanterns from the trajectory you mention and longevity.
Maybe the display team? Possibility. I’d have to look to see where they were practising or any events locations to confirm our rule out this.
Sounds very interesting though none the less.
I’m not sure about microlights as it sounds quite late for them to be up but I’m no expert about their flight time limits .
UFOs ?possibly ! That are about and a lot of them at times too . I have been seeing them for the last 25 years and filming them for 17 of those years.
Thanks again though for sharing your sighting with me.
P.S If you’re interested , I am hoping to reschedule my ufo presentation for possible October /November time Pending covid and personal situation. Crazy last 3 years really, lost my dad 10 months ago, since then mum been in hospital 3 times and also had cancer on top of all this. I’m the only one who looks after her and previously my dad too and the year of Agony leading up to my Dads passing really wasn’t pleasant at all. Hopefully though things will become a little more settle for mum ( I pray for that to give her even a slightly better quality of Life than she’s had for some time) .
All being well I’m aiming for these months.
take care, let’s hope for some intense summer storms , more sunshine, then some snow for winter to come and few more UFOs to boot as well
J
Almost certainly the display planes. They fly over me in Warminster all the time, and the description fits to a T, notably the changing colours. Please see my photos from a few nights ago (taken as spoof ufo shots for fun...)
Offerman - I’m keen to see your talk, or maybe meet for a chat at some point.

Didnt know you’d seen ufos as well ?
What have you seen ?
Sorry I think you’ve been led astray. I’m fascinated with all things Fortean, but have never seen anything remotely weird, to my lasting regret. My aunt claimed to have seen a ghostly woman crossing the road at dead maids (A36) but we only saw a barn owl. My wife and I became convinced we were watching an ABC in the field next to our house. Closer inspection revealed a domestic moggy that foreshortening had made look bigger. Living in Warminster I of course find the whole ufo thing iNteresting, but I’ve never seen anything. Tbh I think no one else did either, just an endless stream of mis identified flares, distant car headlights, satellites and so on. Cradle hill Would certainly be an eerie place at night, and if you were hyped up and expecting to see something then I am sure it was easy to believe that you had. Growin* up here I’ve seen military flares all my life, but to an outsider? At least one of the accounts in the literature sounds exactly like a string of flares, with more being shot up as they fade giving an illusion of movement. I even have a picture somewhere of flares that could pass for ufos.
Apologies if you were expecting better, and please don’t be offended if you hold a different view.

Absolutely! We love those woods and the field to Elm Hill.
I often park by the Golf Course road and walk up to Cradle Hill. Nice loop with epic views (and sometimes UFO's).

Indeed, certainly the South Coast potentially seeing some very heavy rainfall! It's definitely going to make up for so much dry weather this year barring the odd unsettled blip here and there. We haven't seen much rain here on the Island at all this year, though this coming up does look rather unpleasant for sure!
Indeed - the mother in law on Hayling has been banging on about how dry its been all summer, yet in sunny Wilts we've had more than enough rain.

Lovely start to the day, but I can see the clouds bubbling up out West.
Fri/Sat looks gopping.
'Gopping'? Typo or just a word I don't know? (Genuine question!)

Something of a frozen slushy deposit on the car roofs, that’s as exciting as it’s got. Except for the fact we will surely get some sunshine today!
And I may have been imagining it but Cley Hill marginally whiter on top...

Well I'm keen at least... If I do see any snowfall it will be I think the 3rd time this winter, any settling will be the second (very brief event way back).

Is no-one else excited by the prospect of some wintriness in the next couple of days? I know we are not expecting the beast, but latest Euro 4 suggests temporary accumulation if nothing else for quite a few in the SW

Waiting for the bus this morning in shorts (long story), definitely felt the cold... Maybe I'm getting old!

That heavy rain looks like its practicing for the M4 corridor snow in winter...

First night of the summer with the rubbish air cooling fan (supposed to be like air con - it's not...). Window open and woke to very heavy rain. Still feels very muggy.

Is it wrong to be enjoying the rain?

Yep. In Warminster we are getting a lot of storms generating over us or near to us. I think partly the higher ground of the plain helps. There is a definite uplift between Frome and here, and high ground to th3 north of Warminster.
