I have been to Siberia in summer, very nice (Baikal) I recommend the place on the south eastern shore near the hot springs, as the temperature is moderated by the lake water and never gets too extreme, plus you get to rest your chilly limbs in the nice hot water from underground. You have to like eating lots of dried fish though.

Fascinating article about Baikal here if you need a break from weather.

  2. Falling nicely now in Leicester. My newly installed back garden lamp-posts are fully operational. No more sitting upstairs alone in the spare room watching the street and worrying the wife.clapping.gif

And, after 6 exciting weeks of solid model watching - I have had 1cm of lying snow for 4 nights, its snowing right now and more within the next 24 hours. good.gif

  3. Ah yeah, I remember that and the conversation we had about the elements the thunderstorm brought with it. :) Tried to have a hunt for that topic by Stormyking where I did that story about the 2005 thunderstorm, but looks like its vanished into the unknown dark alleyways of the Netweather forum (although if I still manage to find it, will let you know).

I would probably agree that the storm wasn't severe in that there didn't seem to be any tornadoes and with it not being a particularly long lasting storm. The hail and wind was sure impressive, though. In fact, the hail that fell was probably the heaviest I have ever seen with it literally hammering down on the walkway and lawns outside Moretan Hall. Although I'm still nervous about looking at the lightning sometimes (due to worrying it will strike me, lol), would be great to see another thunderstorm like that one.

When I first looked at the chart, was thinking that it perhaps wasn't supportive for thundery weather with it looking as though the airflow was mainly from the South-West, until I read your informative summary. I'm just curious, though, what are surface contours?

I remember this period too. I took this photo in Leicester on May 22nd 2005.

  4. TEITS guessed it right yesterday , part skill , and lot of luck , what i cant workout is that even at 6pm today , nowcast the bbc and met still ignored

all the signals that were showing from the radars , and lots of people on this site started to question their westerly bias . Hopefully there will be a serious look at

how the bbc and met office seem obsessed with their model output when they are so obviously wrong , and then a re so reluctant to update when proved wrong.

The peculiar thing is that they admit uncertainty in the build up to the event. Why don't they just get the radar up on the screen like we do, and show people where the rain is falling on the day? Afterall they broadcast live every half hour and it would be "reality weather" rather than a vague graphic. Could get ratings too.
